    • RE: Mee Toh

      Strong Mummy:
My son graduated from MT in yr 2012. That make him now 15 years old.

I have to say that MT used to be a very academic and proactive communication with good teachers from the lower primary and upper primary due to the princpal, Mdm FOng who manage the school for decade as a princpal.
The school moved out from Eunos area to Punggol to expand and also partly to add in new cluster of school relocation since Punggol is a new estate.

But in yr 2011, Mdm Fong decide to retire and the new P is Mr Gau, transfer from neighbouring school Hougang Primary school
From then, since My boy is born in yr 2000, the millieium dragon year which is also the hot popular year, the teachers started alot of communication breakdown,

Marking such as english, chinese are totally not up to standard, Teachers alway absent and their maths Hw are alway piling up ... Parent have to really brush them up,
I have to place my son to an enrichment school to find where is his weakness,

What we found out from the school is that when I bought along the paper marked by the school for eng and chinese, the teacher highlighted all structured wrongly,
We were in no time less than 5 weeks before PSLE and got my gf who used to be the HOD of one primary school for english to squeeze in her time to coach my son everything,

Even now that my sis' twins are in MT primary 4, she also feedbacked to me that the teachers are very good in pushing back work to let the children go home and do..
Most questions are hard!. She has to source for answer, do out solution to help the twins.
The worse part when the twins teachers suggest the class to be divide accordingly to those with tuition outside and those without any tuition...

She has to endure another 2 years to see the twins finish the PSLE and thats it.
As for me, I have totally lost confidence unless a new principal come in next year since I still have no2 to enroll in the next 2 year....

May place her to Peichun Public instead...
I feel that reviews like this one should be taken with a pinch of salt as there are some factual mistakes in it.

Firstly, Mee Toh did not move from Eunos, they were from Race Course Road. Next, the current principal was not from a \"neighbouring\" school. He was from a school in the far west before becoming the principal at Mee Toh. And one more, the previous principal, beloved by many, is Miss Fong. All the children, teachers and parents address her as that.

So, if these basic information are already wrong, I do not know what else is correct in the rest of the post.

Moving on to the issues raised about the teachers, work not marked, communication breakdown and so on. How true are all these? Based on one child's alleged experience and what is claimed to be the children of her \"sister\"? I cannot make head or tail of the issues being raised as I don't see how someone who has to be enrolled in enrichment due to bad teachers in school still have to have a HOD to tutor him for PSLE after that.

I am sceptical that such general sweeping statements are fair to those in the school who actually bother to give their best to the children in this school or any school for that matter. In any school, there is bound to be a good mix of teachers. Why generalise and make sweeping statements?

Sometimes, as keyboard warriors, it is important to check facts and be discerning parents to find out what is the truth and what isn't. Anyone can just post up bad reviews on any school here and get away with it. I am actually quite sick of looking at all the complaints being raised by those who think they know everything.

But just in case that the experience is true, please do register your next child at Pei Chun Public. I am sure all the teachers there are spectacularly good and the principal will never change.

      Good luck!

    • RE: [Punggol] Primary Schools

      Mommy Lenny:
I stay very near MT and more then once I saw MT students wearing uniform hitting their domestic helper or throwing tantrums at their helper while shopping or eating at nearby shops. The older MT students (both male and female )loves to loiter around the playground / basketball court near school to play games on their handphone while spewing vulgarities. Results aside, I think values and stress level in the school does play a part in children's character development.

There are so many issues to address here but I am not going to as I am not the parents of these children and neither am I working for the school in question.

The problem of the children hitting their domestic helper. I believe this does not fall on the school to educate their students on how to treat their domestic helper. In school, in any school for that matter, pupils are taught good things and values are inculcated formally and informally. Each child is taught how to treat others and how to behave. However, parents should shoulder the responsibility to educate their offsprings too and not just leave it to the school to bear all blame. The children could have learnt all these domestic helper abuse by watching their own parents beating and treating their domestic helper in that manner. Does the responsibility of educating the parents also then fall on the school as well? What kind of a society have we become if the first people we look to when such a failure in teaching the children on manners fall immediately onto the school? Do reflect on what you are insinuating.

Secondly, as for the second revelation that the students loiter around outside school to spew vulgarities and play with the mobile phone games. I believe this is not a problem unique to this school. It just so happens that you are living near the school and have seen a small group of pupils from this huge school doing so. Is it fair to implicate the whole school and its character development programme as a result?

Take a walk to other parts of Punggol, Seng Kang or other neighbourhoods for that matter and see if the problem is more rampant, less rampant or just a rampant in these places.

Bottom line is that, as a on outsider, it is easy for us to pass judgment onto others while hiding behind a keyboard. However, we need to be mindful of the things we say, either directly or indirectly, as it might not be fair to those that we have sweepingly implicated by our words. I am sure the staff of this school and every school have done their level best to look into the overall development (to get good results and to be good human being) of these children but where exactly have they failed?

I have seen for myself how students of other schools in this neighbourhood behave and also been to other places to see how children in those places carry themselves and I have my own views. However, I reserve judgement or comments as I know that I am not in the best position to say who's right and who's wrong. Neither am I qualified to decided who is to be blamed when the youth behave in such a deplorable manner.

I hope I have not offended anyone from my post. Just my take on things.

      eastshore:
Horizon should increase / revert back their capacity to 300 ~ 330 based on the demand in Punggol, instead of reducing to 240.

Schools in Punggol (and anywhere else, for that matter) are not equipped to maintain their intake numbers, let alone increase it. There's only a limited number of classrooms that each school has.

Greendale is just a stone's throw away and has been undersubscribed for years. Residents along Edgedale Plains have Greendale as an alternative option to Horizon should they fail to secure a place. Schools are built with the number of residents ins surrounding areas in mind and enrolment figures are not based on the school's popularity.

Imagine a scenario if Horizon continue to increase its intake and so does Mee Toh. Greendale will end up being left with just one or two classes of P1s each year.

Every school is a good school and every school has its physical constraints.

No, not the case and I believe this is not unique to this school.

So, I guess that's the official word from the Ministry of Education. Maybe the information that the school will offer Tamil Language for the next batch of P1s has not filtered down to the person who answered your phone call. Or maybe you called Punggol Green instead.

So to answer your question if I'm sure - Yes, I'm sure. Good effort on calling them though.

      GirlT07:
      itskryptic:

Edgefield, Horizon and Punggol View will only offer Tamil Language. For a confirmation, it is best to call the school or approach the Hindi Society. On their website http://www.hindisociety.com/, they have listed schools that offer Hindi during curriculum time under \"In School Parallel Programme\". Unfortunately, Panjabi is only offered at their centres only, according to their website http://www.ssef.org.sg/cms/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=79&Itemid=152. Hope this helps you make a wise

Hi itskryptic, you sure know punggol view offer Tamil language? As I called them up to enquire they said no.

    • RE: St Hilda's Primary

I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news but if you're still thinking of transferring your son to the school now, it probably means that you're not already on the waiting list to come into SHPS.

The school has a long waiting list of pupils wanting to transfer over. Simple logic would tell you that if the current pupils have no reason to leave, then probably the P4s of 2014 will only have less than 10 vacancies. So, if they go down the waiting list and offer admission to these people on a first-come-first-served basis, I think your son would not be able to come in. Wait list norms for schools like SHPS can easily fill up a class of 40.

If you truly believe that the current school is a mistake, then, I suggest you start considering other options.

Opportunity for posting to Mee Toh School

      Dear Student Teachers,

Mee Toh School would like to provide the opportunity for PGDE/BA/BSc student teachers to do their final practicum in the school so that they can be considered for posting to the school upon completion of their programme in the middle of 2014. Interested student teachers can write in to Ms Wong Siew Ying, the administration manager at wong_siew_ying@moe.gov.sg before 18 October 2013.

      Regards,
      Programme Planning and Management Unit

Parents: Your children at Mee Toh will be getting student teachers.
I don't see why this is an issue, to be frank. MOE has a high attrition rate and people are leave the organisation at alarming rates. So, every school is bound to have to renew their teaching pool with NIE student teachers who are at the tail end of their training. I believe MTS is doing something right by inviting people who are actually interested in coming to MTS, rather than those who were ordered to go to the school by MOE. It's stated there also that they will be doing practicum (if you don't know what it means, it's just that these student teachers will be under the guidance of experienced teachers who are STILL the teachers of the class) and seeing if they're a good fit for the school before taking them in permanently. Before even coming into the school, I believe the P/VPs/HODs would want to meet these prospective candidate. Even if these hand picked student teachers come in, who are we to say that these teachers will end up being in the teaching pool thereafter? If found to be a wrong fit, they will be posted elsewhere by the system.

      sembgal:
Having student teachers are good like fresh air but remember they do not come with experience. Why is MTS shunned by more experienced teachers? High demand and expectation is always expected but a school that does not put in the measures in place when teachers go on maternity leave or sick leave doesn't reflect too well on the planning of the school committee.
Being a student teacher does not necessarily mean that they do not come with experience. I know of teachers at the P5 level now who were student teachers just a year ago and one of them even has a masters and has worked in the private sector for some time while the other brings to MTS many years of teaching experience from prestigious enrichment/tuition centres and applying concepts on the children in MTS to stretch their potentials. Personally, I know at least one of these two is doing a splendid job that majority of parents and pupils from the class hope that this teacher follows the pupils up to P6. Why? Because these teachers aren't jaded. Their fresh take on teaching the children is very refreshing and effective.

Student teachers now are not just fresh grads or people with no experience. There are so many mid career professionals who have had their fair share out there before coming into the school with passion and determination.

Btw, just so you know, Mrs Amir that some of you have been raving about a few pages earlier, was a student teacher in the school less than 3 years ago. Even back then, she was making waves. There are so many young teachers in MTS who are likewise and I think these teachers are integral in propelling the school forward.
