Do December babies enlist later than their peers? Or your date of birth is irrelevant?

Don’t have a son in SJI IB but what is "English" in IB? Isn’t it the Group 1 subject - Lit?

English. Although the irony of it all is that my J1 son (who cleared HCL in sec 4) now wishes he had spent more time learning chinese properly in High School. He really laments the lack of opportunities to use Chinese in school now (since no one at home speaks it) and he is finding it actually really useful in real life to be very conversant in Chinese.

Maybe that is the magic of HCI.. :snuggles:

    • RE: PENAL CODE 377A Significance

Are the younger generation so easily influenced? Without a mind of their own, or ability to sift thoughts , analyse and make their own decisions, esp those in RI ACSI (i only mention these two schools because those were the quoted examples above).

I was from a convent school and we had nuns for teachers. And we had lesbians. Following the logic above, wonder what that says about nuns.

It’s easy to blame someone else for bad behaviour / traits ("aiyah, my son/dd very fussy about food -follow the daddy/mummy/grandpa/[insert random relative]") but c’mon, you can’t always say it’s someone else’s fault right?

Anyway the bottomline is how can a person impose his/her values on others? …

As to whether your sexual orientation in inborn, or acquired (we can agree to disagree) - i’m sure there’s tons of literature and supporting studies either way, but perhaps some can be discounted once you take in their inherent biases.

And if you don’t support and your children are LGBT? Would you cast them aside and disown them, or choose to love and accept them?

    • RE: PENAL CODE 377A Significance

      I didn’t say western values.

Slavery was acceptable in the past, both for east and west. But society progressed, and these norms in the past are now no longer acceptable.

I think we can agree to disagree, no need to say there will be 天谴. And yup, i agree it’s normal to get emotional when it comes to religion, which makes it hard to have a proper conversation sometimes. Peace!

    • RE: PENAL CODE 377A Significance

Another issue i have with having 377A is that it lends justification to discrimination. It’s a form of legalised discrimination, isn’t it?

Already there is so much discrimination - R21 rating for Modern Family on netflix because of a gay couple, some organisations won’t hire people based on their sexuality, library books being culled because of certain content… heaven forbid schools openly discuss LGBT issues in an objective manner…

If we want to move forward to be a real first world country, i think we have to accept that we need to be progressive in thought and behaviour too. We aren’t going to get there just by adopting e-payments.

    • RE: PENAL CODE 377A Significance

Maybe the ones who are causing the breakdown of the family unit are those who oppose gay relationships, and make it hard for their loved ones to come out because they know they won’t be accepted.

It is your right to "guide personally at [sic] the comfort & security of home", and no one is refuting that. But as a law, 377A cannot stand if it is not intended to be enforced.

The law is not the bible, and it stands independent of religion or a family’s moral values. It is supposed to be just, and applied without fear or favour. And if it will not be enforced, or is not intended to be enforced, it should be repealed.

      Thank you very much, Lexis.

Your table is a great help! Seems like if you take CP in Year 5, you are headed only for Computing in Uni, as Physics or Chemistry would be required for engineering courses. Is a great combi though if that’s DC’s strength/interest. Will see how this all pans out. 🙂
Think it was doodbug who shared the HCI link 🙂

yeah.. well. by JC they have their own opinions on what to do/study, and as parents, we can only advise and support. Interest is very important because JC is tough!

    • RE: Hwa Chong Institution (High School)

The minimum requirement forA levels is 3H2 1H1 content subject, one of which must be contrasting. Even if you do 4H2, your worst H2 will be "downgraded" to a H1. A large number of HCI kids do 4H2 because it makes a difference when it comes to scholarship applications (something about Academic units…) but there are also a number of kids who do 3H2 1 H1. HCI has its own internal criteria for deciding this. IIRC you need a minimum MSG to do 4H2 and cannot have taken any re-exams in sec 4.

Typical Sci combination will be P/BCME (physics or bio, Chem, Math and Econs). Arts students usually do H/GELM (hist or geography, econs, lit and maths). HCI’s JC website has some info on what combinations will be offered and etc, but all this may change by your son’s time, so perhaps just take it as a guide.

2 is good, esp if only in sec 1! keep it up.
