Hi Parents, did any DSA parents called DHS about books and uniforms purchase? Just wondering if they will let DSA kids purchase earlier to avoid rush.
Thanks, Mark! That’s good to hear and is certainly an attractive feature of a dual track school. I’m a bit concerned because in CHS (also a dual track school), it seems difficult to switch out to OP as classes are full and there’s a wait list of kids with good results wanting to get in.
      Inside Catholic High,
@end of Sec 2 streaming, the O-level seats are very hot, in popular demand.

      Why?

Because a few different group of students, are trying to seek Transfer.

      1) end of Sec 2 students, from local Secondary schools, armed with good year end results, are seeking Transfer into CHS (O-level) track.

      2) overseas Asean scholars including our nearby neighbour Malaysians Chinese end of Sec 2 students, also seeking Transfer into CHS, start new academic year Sec 3.

Some of these Malaysian students who are studying in Malaysia's Chinese run private primary and Secondary schools, their standard of Chinese is very powerful. In fact, they learn 3 languages, since young. They learn (Malay, ie. their National language, Chinese and English). Thus, for them to join Catholic High (SAP school), no issue

      3) some of the CHS (IP) students, who maybe due to poor time management issue handling 8 to 9 subjects, or handphone addiction or other reasons, cannot cope with IP curriculum , eventually will also attempt to seek Transfer quickly & urgently back into the O-level track, just in the nick of time to prepare for O-level exam,
having tried out IP for 2 full years, realized that IP don't quite suit them after all.

      4) CHS by itself, is a Full school, hence the strong, appealing attraction.

For Sec 4 graduates from CHS Secondary, their future sons can enrol into CHS primary school for primary 1 school admission in future one day, even though they themselves had never studied in CHS primary school section, before.

      In contrast,
VS not a Full school, don't even have any primary school section associated with VS. Does Victoria primary school exists ? No, it doesn't.
Thanks, phtthp! This is quite insightful. I suppose the demand for places for VS also exists at Sec 3, but the other points are quite valid.

I’m wondering now if it’s a more prudent then, for the child to opt for O levels Track first and if he does well enough, then switch to IP at Year 3.
Not sure about other schools, but VS seems to be rather challenging. Results must be consistently outstanding. As an example and hypothetical situation only: if DS scores very well for PSLE to gain entry for IP, its a 1 time exam. However for IP track, i believe they are looking at full years' results + teachers' recommendation. Hence, effort to change midway seems comparatively harder. DS has 1 classmate who moved from O to IP in year 3, very bright kid, one of top scorers in his O class. This was only 1 case that we knew off. But moving from IP to O, about 3 i think.

Hi, wondering if Primary School would be informed about students CO? Asking because I dnt intend to let my child know about his CO until he’s done with his last psle paper😬
DS 4 yrs ago received CO letter from his primary school, which was given to him to pass to us. And it’s in the secondary school‘s envelope, so he knows what it was about😅. I don’t know why that school was so special to hand deliver then. But probably won’t now due to covid.
We were also contacted by secondary school via call to let us know the results.

Maybe u want to check with the schools’ teachers and let them know if you have certain preference.

    • RE: School Of The Arts, Singapore

      Dear SOTA parents,

Need some advice on SOTA’s culture. I understand that SOTA prides itself with grooming students to think independently and pursue their passions. And being Art students, I think they will learn to be more confident in making their points even if its unconventional. All these are good qualities and I seriously think that Singaporeans need to have more of these qualities in the workplace.

However, can someone give me the other side of the coin? It’s not all a bed of roses and I want to be prepared, as a parent as I interact and guide with my child, and for my child as a student in future, of what to expect, in terms of culture, social behaviour etc, the non-acad part.

Appreciate in advance to any candid and honest feedback. If you wish, pls pm me. DC has gotten CO from SOTA dance, and we hope to make an informed decision.

      Thanks again.
Could any current parents tell me what the school hours are like for Victoria? We are considering it as a DSA choice but the distance is a real concern as we live in Serangoon especially if they have a lot of days when they need to stay back. I've seen two extremes as my daughter stays back nearly every day whereas my other son only stays back on CCA days.

      Bus 135, about an hour.

I was asking more about the school start and finish times 😊
School starts 7.30am, but be in school by 7.20am to be safe. Thursday is late start day at 8.30am, again best to be there by 8.20am. About 2 days a week, DS day ends around 2.35pm without CCA. Another 2 days about 6.30pm due to CCA. Friday ends the earliest at 1.05pm. Been quite consistent from year 1 to now year 4. We stay at YCK area, no straight bus. He takes 3 buses to get to school in the morning, and its less than 1.5hrs. We sometimes drive him to school, and its via expressways. Takes us about 20mins to get to school. VS is really good if you drive as the school is near to the ECP exit, so no problems with queueing to drop off.

      Hi all,

Does anyone know if it’s difficult to switch from IP to O Levels track in VS half way through their sec school life? Or is the student expected to transfer to another school? Thank you.
Don't think it difficult, especially if the school thinks that the kid is unable to perform and meet promotion criteria successfully. VS has a set of promotion criteria that all IP students must meet in order to progress. If the kid cannot meet it, the school will support and coach through guidance program, consultation etc first. If the kid still cannot meet it, and/or the parents feel strongly that the kids cannot succeed in IP, they allow, and in fact recommend to move to O level. Usually they are very strict at year 2 promoting to year 3. They feel that if the boy cannot succeed in IP at year 2, then he should move to O level at year 3 to have time to learn O level curriculum, since IP curriculum is very different from O. Moving from end of year 3 IP to O is very risky and the school actually said that some boys may retain another year as they are not confident that he will be able to sit for O comfortably. I have personally heard from DS (he is in VS IP year 4) that a few of his ex-classmates moved to O in year 2 and 3.

Hi everyone, I'm beginning to consider options for my DS in 2021. Hoping to find a holistic school that is perhaps less stressful than the RI/ HCI whilst giving a holistic education instead of focusing on purely academic grades.
Can parents who have kids attending the above schools share some of their experiences so far?
      Much appreciated!
      Hi,
My son attends VS and is in now in Year 4 of their IP program.

Academically, it's a tough program, which I believe is similar to any IP schools. They are taught stuff beyond their levels, eg Year 1 were taught Year 4 math topics. IP really stretches kids beyond their comfort zones, they need to be independent learners, take the initiatives to consult with teachers on specifics, learn to manage their time on work, projects (many projects in VS, at least 2 per subjects a year I think) and CCA (a big thing in VS, they are very competitive. Nearing to competitions, there will be more practices.) However, I feel that the early exposure really helps as it means he is actually taking more time to learn the advance stuff and skills which will only be taught later.

Socially, my son really enjoys his days. He is close to his classmates of all races, non-Singaporeans and returning Singaporeans from abroad. It seems that the entire class is closely bonded although there are still cliches amongst them. He often comes home with jokes his classmates made, or funny things they did, even now that he is 16 😄 This is a blessing, to still be able to communicate casually with my teenage son. He is now listening to Tamil pop songs (we are Chinese), introduced by his classmates, and even his younger sister is influenced too. He seems to be able to mix well socially with them. As a context, DS is a bit of a sensitive guy. He used to think that he was being bullied in primary school, or classmates didn't like him in year 1/2. So seeing him enjoying the company of his classmates now means a lot. Oh, they also have a mandatory boarding program in year 3. They have to stay in the school's hostel for 1 term. It was a great learning experience for DS. They stayed in hostel during the weekdays and get to come home on weekends.

The boys play a lot of sports. During PE, they are introduced to different sports, so they can be playing football (a big thing in VS, boys are always playing during recess, PE, breaks, after school etc), floorball or basketball. VS is also a very performing arts inclined school, strong in Choir, Band etc. Apologies, I'm only familiar with these 2.

In summary, a tough academic program, but strong bonds and camaraderie spirit. Teachers and school are very supportive. The nurturing environment helped him to mature. The bond between some of the teachers and the boys are really great. The boys even play basketball with the teachers during break time. Really love the school.
