I think that ur choices should be the following:
1)Guangyang
2)Whitley
3)Bartley
instead....Very slim chances of getting in to Pierce so I did not list it but up to you. Good luck! ^^

thank you Desi....if my boy is keen to go bartley, and if i list it as his 1st choice, he should be able to get in right, if the COP doesnt change?

Yup, since he qualifies for the COP last year by 7 points - which is a lot. So even if the COP goes up, it won't go up as much as 7 points. Hope I helped and all the best! ;)
thank you! really hope he will get into his first choice 🙏

Sun_2010:

Put your choices in order of preference
Simply put
Think which school your DS wants to go , put that as choice 1. If his score meets the COP he will be allocated that school, the rest of the choice do not matter.
If there are no vacancies in his school of first choice, then the second choice is considered and so on.
If your son wants Bartley as his first school of choice then put that as the first choice. Then his next best preference , so on.

hope this is clear
thank you much! he tells me to indicate bartley as his 1st choice, followed by peirce (tho we both know its prob a NO) and then followed by balestier, whitley, guangyang, bishan park

JonC:
Banding, you can read from you child's book.

Express is based on school's O Level L1B5 average score. L1 = 1st Language and B5 = Best 5.

Normal is based on L1B4.

Choice 1 is the most important. Make sure you give COP careful consideration especially many believe most COP will be same or higher. For me, DS is in full school, so we just select the same school.

Choice 2 to 5, I make some gamble to stretch the lower COP a little.

Choice 6 must also take the second most care, I would choose one which child's score should be middle to top of the COP range, do not stretch to the bottom of the COP. So if really landed in Choice 6, you child will be in the better class of the school.

I was told that T-Score is up to 6 decimal point, so Choice 6 Score is greater than say Choice 2, the one with Choice 6 will go in. Can anyone verify this?

My 2 cents worth.
hello JonC, should i indicate my 6 choices as follows: Peirce (208), Bartley (193), Balestier (188), Whitley (195), Guangyang (203), Bishan Pk (188)...and my son's score is 200...he says i shd indicate Bartley as his 1st choice.

HI! wow, small world! which class was he in? i am still thinkin hard....we went to scout a few schools today, to see the location and the accessibility. went to see chong boon, montfort, bartley and bendemeer. of the 4, bartley is most convenient by mrt access but the walking distance from the station to the school is really too long a distance... if only ds had gotten slightly better score, then pierce would be so good for us

My ds is in joy. Which class is yours in?

Thank you very much - I truly appreciate your input and will check out the mentioned schools. dont know much abt med, mean and banding and dont really know what it means. i think it would be tough to appeal for a place in cat high, even with religion, but i must add that CHS principal Mr Lee and my boy's teachers have been really very supportive and nurturing the past 6 years.....

hi, you're welcome. For banding, let's say if bartley is band 9 for express, it means that the avg kid in the sch will get approx 18 pts for 6 subjects for o level. May apply for jc.

My ds also from chs. So now also applying for schs. In fact submitted already. It's true that the teachers are very supportive. My ds is lucky to have 4 nice teachers this year.

Yes the cop for his affiliated school is 225 and for non affiliation is 248,so I think really no hope of him getting in since his score is only 200. should I skip his affiliated school in my 6 choices or should i still indicate as my 1st choice? But if he does get in cos of CCA etc, will it be a stretch for him ESP if others are far stronger than him? So many factors to worry about 😞

amongst the following, which do you know has a good environment and is nurturing? Chong boon, guangyang, Bishan park, Bartley. All these schools have cop of <200. My son was really keen to get into pierce but the cop is 208. We are at Bishan/Thomson areA and bus or mrt are preferred mode of transport.

Hi,

You may like to choose schs that value add the pupils academically. If your child is willing to travel a bit more, your options might be a bit wider. These choices are just my opinion. The decision is still up to you.

Supposing if you put
1. Affiliate sch - Sure no chance. Even if you appeal, don't know if can.
2. Peirce - Past few years COP is 206-208, unlikely to drop but still can try if you like.

Since the first 2 choices may not be attainable, therefore your next 4 choices should be something that is not beyond your reach.

3. Bartley Sec - (COP 193, Mean 204, Med 203, Band 9 Sch for Exp, Band 5 for Normal) This sch seems to perform better than most as it has more stars in the academic value-add category for both express and normal. Besides the mean and median is not far from your child's score, making your child the avg kid in sch.

4. Bishan Park - (COP 188, Mean 201, Med 200) This sch also value adds express students. Supposed to be centre of excellence for art, so their art and music programme quite strong.

Others:
Yio Chu Kang 188 / 201 200 (Value Add - Normal)
Macpherson 188 / 202 201 (Value Add - Normal, Band 5 for Normal)
No idea about these sch but they value add normal pupils, maybe will have something in the pipelines for express students?

Whitley 195 / 205 204 - I ever asked a boy from that sch if he likes the sch. He's from the express stream. He said that other than the perception that the school is not great and everything, he still generally likes the sch. I also asked if he had a chance to choose schs again, would he pick this sch and he said he would.

Balestier Hill 188 / 201 200 (Value Add - Exp) - Can consider?

Bendemeer 192 / 204 202 (Value Add - Exp) - Looks impressive? I did consider this for my ds.

Guang Yang 203 / 209 207 - past 3 years COP is 203, no idea if it will drop to below 200 this year.

Chong Boon 190 / 204 202 - I have no idea about this sch.

Good luck to you and your ds.

• RE: Choose Secondary school for 2010

My thought.

If your child can study under STRESS and STRETCH himself to compete with others (there are successful case), then talk to the affiliated school principal and seek his/her advice.

Personally, I will skip the affiliated school as I rather study in a environment where my peers are about my standard.

2) GuangYang lower COP is 203, hence you may have a challenge getting in.

3) How about Whitley Sec, lower COP is 195.
at this moment, i honestly don’t think he is the studying type although he is very disciplined in time management. to put him in a group where all or most have done much better is being a little unfair to him.

but since its affiliated plus he says he has SYF etc, then i will go ahead with the affiliated school for 1st choice…but i have to be very careful with my next 5 choices…we didnt consider whitley cos of the feedback from his school teachers…quite lost now as i think there were a few others which werent too good eg. bishan park

my ds got into express with a score of 200. he wont be able to get into his affiliated secondary school since the school’s COP is 225. does this mean i should not even list it as his first choice?

schools in our list include:
pierce cop 208
monfort cop 206
holy innocent cop 219
guangyang cop 203
chong boon cop 190
bartley cop 193
ankss cop 227
mayflower cop 222
beatty cop 217

or should i be looking at cop ranging from 188 upwards?

appreciate your advice thanks!
