RE: Asia spending billions on tutors: study
Found Pamela Lim's letter. Written in 2011. Not that long ago. MOE's response is attached in her FB note. Her daughter is very bright.

Thanks a bunch... I know Pamela, who also wrote to ST Forum years ago... but I had never read this.
Oh... That I didn't know. Ok will go google her letter. Thanks so much.oxyleo:
Food for Thought... I don't agree with everything but I do agree that with meritocracy, elites believe they are ENTITLED to success whilst others are not... and fail on the attitude of stewardship... and empathy for others who don't succeed.

Again, I don't agree with everything but this is well-written...

Hi Chen,
Since this letter was shared here, I thought it may be meaningful also to share a viewpoint of another parent that was posted as a comment (via FB link) to the letter.

I don't agree with everything she says, but she does have a very balanced stand on parenting. I also identify with her when she says she doesn't know if she's right or wrong in her tuition guts.
Cheers!

RE: Primary ONE English Assignment
limlim - Iβve cast my vote. And thanks for organizing this poll. The info shared also helps us understand whatβs going on in schools other than those attended by our own kids. Most useful.

Lilac66 - are u taking cover now? :gloomy:
What did we do??? Or what did I do? Was it me? Or was it someone else.... Something else?...
Sometimes in life, some things are imminent. Human after all.
For all those that are upset and writhing in pain from the ugly display of human nature, thanks for sharing your feelings. There's no right or wrong - it's how you feel. And it's good you share it.
For all those that have hurled words of scorn and meanness at others, or even stoked the flames of fire  (oh my, I'm now classified in a similar camp as
, hey look - similarity ), nobody is really gonna believe us anyway if we say that it was unintended. And maybe we will even be unapologetic, even produce satisfactory grounds, for good reason, for the positions taken.
Now we know why some islands under dispute remain so for a long, long time, to the extent that it can even cause an unprecedented stall in the latest ASEAN meeting communique.
So.....
I'm sorry to hear some saying they will not post here anymore. Since you've shared, it is only fair that I share that I WILL continue. (Cringe! Grimace!)
To me, this represents freedom of speech. Freedom of expression. it's actually a cause for celebration! :celebrate:
As much as someone demands civility in a forum, they don't necessarily get it. Nope, sorry. No gag orders.
As much as someone demands more peaceful sharings and less animosity, they don't necessarily get it either. Cos, nope, sorry, no gag orders.
I'm sure we can pick up the pieces, and continue our discussion on the phenomenon. Can't we?
You see, there is
-Who : Who caused the phenomenon? I think we are stuck here. And then war broke out.
-What : what caused it? Quite similar the above, cos we touched on systems, KPIs, kiasu ism
- How : how did we get to this stage?
-When : when did it start really and for how long more will it last?
-Why : why is it important to discuss this phenomenon ie the effects, both positive and negative for our children, families, the next generation, society at large.
We all have a different threshold for pain, shame, and different values towards self-gain, and different perspectives on society vs self.
Why don't we leave everyone as they are, and have a meaningful subject matter discussion?
A merger of stands may actually bring about the birth of something new! :romance: -

:rotflmao: don't be too sure Liliac66. There's always a quiet before a storm. I have a funny feeling..... Because my crystal ball told me that the WWIII started somewhere else. Will eventually spread back here when the fighting dies down \"there\". Don't be too sad when that happens k? Being the sweet peaceful dear you are. I promise not to reveal my horns unless someone else draws First Blood, ok? :hugs: just take shelter, for it might be brutal! :nunchuk:
:rotflmao: Thanks for your warning! ok, I take cover first. :siam: Take care! Will be back next year. Hopefully things have died down by then.
Are all teachers NIE trained before they teach in schools? I have seen teachers who taught for one semester and then the school announced that they are leaving for NIE for professional training so they are not certified teachers yet ?
Teachers are not NIE trained when they start teaching in schools...they are untrained teachers until the principals decide whether they deserve that chance. Some of these untrained teachers may never get that NIE training. This was what I heard from a reliable source :censored:
:yikes: This is NEWS to me! All along I have the notion that only relief teachers are not NIE-trained.
Oops, thank goodness VK2010 is not here, or he'll scoff at this \"hearsay, hearsay again\" :rotflmao:
:rotflmao: don't be too sure Liliac66. There's always a quiet before a storm.
