    • RE: Pathlight School or other mainstream school?

      Hi Muaji,

Sorry for not logging in frequently and missing your questions.

My son is currently in P4. There are good moments and bad moments, and teachers have been keeping me informed when his behaviour gets a little worse. This is especially when he falls sick and takes antibiotics. His gut flora is definitely affected and thus his bad behaviour.

My son does not have many friends in school and is not bothered by it, so I just leave him alone is this aspect.

For school work, he is coping well, even though he does not do very well in Chinese Language, he is not as weak as other neurotypical children I have come across. My expectations is not that high since he does not go for any tuition classes.

Stress and anxiety is something our children must learn to cope with. My son is a cheerful boy but may not be able handle stress well. He is very verbal and speaks of his stressful moments. During these moments, I will step in and counsel him.

As a parent, we know our children best. If your child may have some issues with school work, you may not want to add extra stress on him. If you think he is able to handle school work and is able to sit through classes without a shadow, mainstream can be suitable for him.

However, I strongly advise against a good school, if it means harder exams, more competitive environment and more emphasis on results. Rather than a so called ’ good’ school, it is better to choose a school with low intake as the class size will be smaller and the environment is less stressful.

Just some of my thoughts. Hope they help!

    • RE: Fidget Spinners - Money Pit or Legit Toy?

Personally, I feel that most people are not capable of divided attention. To concurrently play with the spinner and do other things like homework, revision, paying attention in class is not really possible for the children. Before this spinner, children were already playing with stationeries and getting them confiscated by teachers. So, I will not get one for my children. Just my personal views.

The posts are so hilarious. I love reading them. Perhaps the 妈咪pronunciation is to differentiate the mamasan? I think Singaporeans can call mamasan with the correct pronunciation. :rotflmao:

    • RE: Kids need spontaneous play

Tv, phones and tablets are making us antisocial and less creative these days.

When my son was younger, I used to peel a pear, remove the core for him. When he was given a whole pear, he refused to eat it because he did not know where to start. I got fed up and decided to stop ‘serving’ him.

I remember when I was younger, I had to cut my own fruits, fix the things that were not working. I think that is the way to go for the next generation – DIY.

      Hi everyone,

If any parent is interested to find out more about how Tomatis, a neuro auditory program or brain training may improve the attention levels of your child, do drop me a PM.

      Thanks.

    • RE: All About Autism

      Hi Snow 24,

As a mother to a P3 son with ASD, I would say that the comprehension is the result of hnderstanding of the language itself. Instead of focussing on comprehension practices, you may want to look at English language itself. With that being said, I mean if your child is not speaking well, not understanding spoken language, absence of loops of communication, you know that he may not be understanding the language itself.

Try working on communication first. When he understands the language and is able to use it freely, he will automatically know how to do comprehension. So, go to the root of the problem. I am speaking from my own experience with my child, so hope it helps.

    • RE: 11 yo jumped at Fernvale link

I think as much as the boy’s mother has set high expectations, it is not entirely the mother’s fault. How many of us are not tiger mums? Should she know the outcome is pushing the child to his death, I am sure she would not have ‘caned’ him.

The loss of a child is too hard to bear. Let’s just let the family have some peace.

The system will not change, neither will the society, just because of one death. It is useless to criticise the system. I feel that our attitude is more important. Teaching our children the ways to adopt a positive attitude towards life is more important than anything.

    • RE: Yangzheng Primary

      nikkei121:
My kid in lower primary and I find the teachers there very lacking in responsibility. Called up the school at 1.50pm wanting to speak to the Chinese teacher and Maths teacher separately..but found that they had already gone home!

They are not teaching the subjects (facilitate games in class) and expect parents to do most of the teaching at home. This is ridiculous. If the teachers are not teaching, then why do they collect salaries?!!

Some more, many teachers are said to be rushing off to become tuition teachers to earn more money.
Can the MOE stop this irresponsible behaviour? Is it this school or a system wide phenomena?
      Hi Nikkei121,
You are saying that your child is in lower primary and that the teachers are pushing the teaching job to you? Are you saying that your child is facing some issues with learning?

I can understand your frustrations with coaching your child as my children do face problems learning too. My friend used to send her daughter to brain.sg and said that the intervention there has helped her child. Maybe you want to check it out with them? I am in no way related to them, just hearing some positive feedback from my friend. I haven't been there before, so I cannot comment on the effectiveness of their programme.

To be fair, my sister is a teacher too and she has spent long hours in school. If you cannot find the teachers at 1.50pm, they maybe conducting classes, having meetings, workshops, CCAs. So many of my friends have also left the service and I think parents have to play a part in helping our children cope in school too. It has been reported in the newspaper that we are losing experienced teachers every year.

      http://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/education/long-hours-stress-cited-as-reasons-for-leaving-teaching-force

Is the child you mentioned your first child in school? Don't ignore the signs as I did with my son. He was not coping in school and I only intervened at P5 which was quite late. He had to be exempted from CL and barely passed his exams. So, when my girl started to show difficulties in learning, I was able to intervene at an earlier stage.

      All the best to you.

      Hi NLA2310,

There are a number of places like

      1. Kits4Kids
      2. Divinity Especial Needs Intervention Centre
      3. St. Clare School for special Education
      4. St Gérard’s School

I have not engaged their services before so maybe others can give u their reviews.
