I think to be offered Cat 3 3rd Lang, you need to meet the min T-score as well as be good in both languages. As a guide, my DD got offered 3rd lang as she has 252, A* in both lang and distinction in HCL. Her friend who does not take CL but scored high 260s is not offered 3rd lang.

Out of the 4, which is the most challenging paper?

This is a subjective question - it depends on individuals. For my DD, she finds Science paper the hardest as Languages are her forte.

When are you going? I booked my Phuket driver/guide thru reviews from tripadvisor but I m only going in Dec.

Hi Junemum72, my family of 5 going on 17th Dec. The one with celebrity Li Teng. I'm now wondering if we pre-book the local driver/guide, would they know where to wait for us? Do we need to check with RC on the location where we would be brought to shore?

You can take a look at http://www.phuket.com and check out the attractions there. Then select the ones that you are interested in, and plan your route so that it's the most smooth. There isn't a lot of time, and if you want to maximize the stop there, you should aim to wake up early and go ashore early. Unlike at Penang and Klang, where the ship will dock at the jetty, and everyone just disembark and walk out from the jetty, at Phuket there is no big jetty to house the large ships. The ships dock in the sea, maybe 2 km from shore, and a number of the small boats will take turns to come and ferry batch by batch of passengers from the ship to the shore. They call this 'tendering'.

At breakfast that morning, you can collect a number that will be your queue number. They will announce over the PA system when your number is called, and you should then proceed to the place/level where the tender boats are docking alongside the ship. This prevents overcrowding as each tender boat can take maybe 30 or so passengers only. The tender trip is only about 15 min, but if you go ashore first, you have maybe 2 hr more on land c.f. to the last one tender boat trip, i reckon.

Sorry I don't have contacts of reliable guide/driver there, but hope the info is useful.
Thank you Atrecord! Very helpful already!

There will be lots of drivers with the Toyota Hiace (enlarged) vans at the place where passengers will disembark. All of them will be there to tout their services. I have the feeling that they shouldn't be too expensive, but that's simply becos the few locals we spoke to all sounded like they were not crooks 😄

Then again, I can't say for sure.

The lobang we had was from somebody who was in the tourist biz years ago, and she arranged for the driver/vehicle for us. We planned the route in advance (which wasn't fantastic, as it turned out), and they quote the price. We felt the price was cheap, but the driver was just a driver. He didn't know much of English, and certainly didn't introduce the place/attraction to us.

For Penang, again there are lots of taxi drivers at the jetty, touting their services. We just got 2 cabs there and went to a temple, a place to buy some local tidbits, a hawker centre for lunch, to the place where there's some street arts drawn, and then it was back to the ship. Down there is bargain one, and seriously none of us knew the market rate.
Thanks for sharing your experience, Atrecord. I would prefer to engage a reliable driver/guide in advance, rather than get from on-the-spot touts, especially for Phuket. Still have no clue how to spend our land time there.

Just don't join the organized trips offered on the ship. They count by head and is very expensive, if you have a sizable group. My family (4), parents, and my bro-in-law (2 + baby) went last year. At Phuket, we booked a van to bring us around (around 10 am to 5 pm), and it was only THB3500 (about S$150). We heard from others on board that they joined the day trips at about US$150 per head...

Hi! I'm taking the cruise on 17th Dec and planning to book a driver/guide to bring my family of 5 around Phuket and Penang. May I know how to source for a reliable local driver/guide? Will there be tour guide companies stationing at the port where our cruise dock in Phuket and Penang?
