      Hi Janxu,

Majority of the Teachers have been around for many years. It is quite distinct which Teachers r experienced in teaching the particular level. Majority of the students will stay with the same class for 2 yrs. Therefore, form teachers will stay with the same class for 2 years most of the time. p1 and 2 teachers are very caring but instill discipline as it’s students’ first time in a big environment. P3 and 4 teachers will instill resilience and integrity. Whereas p5 and 6 is time for excellence. The school is undergoing peri upgrading now which has major renovations going on. That is probably why there is no open house this year for parents.
Rowdy is quite subjective. Imagine recess with at least 400 students at one time.
The school has a new Principal this year but this is her 2nd school as P. So far the impression is she is very motherly and very concern with safety. Other than that, I do not see any drastic changes.
My kids are happy and that’s important to me. So that means I am happy with the school.

      Mathkid:
As a PTPS alumnus, I have a few word to say. These are my views, my reviews.

I love Math and Science since a kid, and that was why my parents brought me over to SG to study. When I took the international selection exams for foreigners in the SG Expo, I scored 70% P4 math and 40% for English, so instead of doing P4 work, I was downgraded 2 years and posted to PTPS. After my first year I was killing it, I aced my exams and my parents tried to talk to the principal, but he refused to let me skip a year and close up the age gap. That still left a scar in me as the age gap cause me to lose the opportunity to participate in IMSO. I did well in PSLE without much worries. I have a few cousins and siblings of close friends taking PSLE in a year or two and I realise this:
      They HATE studying.
They HATE math, and science. (I wouldn't have written this if I haven't hear so many PTPS kids say these, I am a strong believer that STEM education should not end up like this)

Please keep in mind that my parents' are not monster parents that send me to hours and hours of tuition, instead they taught me how to use google and the library wisely. They believed in cultivating a love for learning instead of being grade centric, and that is exactly what PTPS lacks.

Here's a few teachers I've had good classes with.
Mr Chin, Science teacher, probably one of the most experience teacher in PTPS, explanation was clear and his lessons designed to KO PSLE specifically.
Ms Cheong, Math teacher, a very patient teacher, you will walk into a class scratching your head and walk out knowing the concepts.
Mrs Tan, English teacher, inspiring and flexible teacher, she did a few out of syllabus things with us that truly make us interested in English, but alas she was the only one.
Mr Hisham, English teacher, fun lessons, no stress, lots of laughs.

Don't get me wrong, there are indeed good teachers in PTPS but the atmosphere and environment will make your kids coming home HATING about learning, especially STEM education. I cannot point out specific cases because it is not a one-off incidence that make so many PTPS student dislike Math and Science, but instead is built up over the years. I am very confident to say most that scored well for PSLE went for tuition, and ALL still hated M&S after graduating.

For parents with more M&S inclined kids:
Send your kids to PTPS and tuition, they might score well, but they are just robots, not learners.
Send your kids to PTPS and not tuition, that's a risk I wouldn't take.

Here's something I don't like so much about PTPS:
They don't sing the national anthem correctly, every new batch of P1 will follow everyone else and sing the anthem wrongly. Years gone by but still...
The prefect system is corrupted, don't let your kids join the prefects, it's a waste of time.
They're about feeding information and exams instead of making your kids love learning.

To summarise, PTPS isn't a school with good vibes, my days were miserable.

PS, if you have kids that are taking PSLE soon, try this loophole:
Let them learn algebra, solving simultaneous equations, and matrices, they are useful in PSLE and save tons for time trying to decipher the model method.

I am sure your parents must have done enough research to send you to study in Singapore.
For the benefit of readers, all foreign students take the entry test set by MOE. Approval, level of entry, regardless of age or level of entry at home country, and school is determined by MOE. Foreigners have a choice whether to accept it or to go to an international school, which don't need such entry test.
Secondly, skipping level is no longer practised in Singapore schools since the 80s, not even for locals, no matter how well you score. Only outstanding P3 students are selected for the GEP Programme.
You choose to study in Singapore and therefore you follow Singapore rules and regulations. Be a grateful foreigner that the local school gave you a place. You seemed to have enjoyed your studies including Maths and Science since u had these great Teachers to thank. You were probably mixing around with friends that speak your mind. Well if you choose to mix with negative people, they will just reinforce your negativity. What makes you believe they really hated Maths and science since they also have such great Teachers.
Learn the value of thankfulness and gratitude. Blaming others and forgetting the goodness others did for you should not be a way of life for a young kid like you. Your age and maturity among your peers should be a positive influence to them but not a reminder that you are simply older by age. Hope you are enjoying your secondary school of choice by now.
Btw, I m a parent with 2 kids in ptps.

    • RE: OnSponge Maths - Discussion

      Hi,

anyone has sent your child to the Holland Branch (Pandan Valley) for the P5 Maths? My son has been getting Private Tution. Although he has can cope with the hw given, he seems to lost them totally during examinations. I have been told Onsponge is meant for children with strong concepts of Maths. Wondering if Onsponge will help him if he is rather weak with concept. I am more concern about classes going on as required to finish the syllabus.

Returning: your child is in which lvl? do u want to share more info with us , at least we can get a better idea.

      thanks!

seems like not much discussion here for pei tong pri. Just to add a little from what I heard from my friend as her DS is in pei tong. Not as bad as some mothers sounded, my friend has her son there this year and so far everything seems good. As I am considering my gal there, if nan hua fails. It seems like the young Principal is very nice and teachers there are very caring towards the children too. they have interesting activities which they call Pal, not too sure what's that, but doesn't matter so long it's good for kids. They also have Chinese speech and drama for P1 and my friend's DS loves it a lot. one thing that nan hua and clementi might not have could be the music programme. It seems like the school pays for instructor to teach the children flute and it's free!!! I have friend's chidren at Pei Hwa, they need to pay for instructor fees even though it is school cca! i think that's not fair. Only complaint my friend has so far is the food, think it's little priceyI guess. The rice with some meat and vegs cost $1.50 or $2? a bit too ex for children I feel. I went to the school website and seems like there is open house for parents to sign up, I might consider if I can spare the time.
      Hi Cassteo,

My son is in P4. My younger son will be joining p1 next year.
Yes, PAL is part of the curriculum for P1 and P2. The past 2 years have been line dancing if I am not wrong as my son is P4 which is no longer available. During music lessons, students will learn different instruments depending on what is available for that year. It seems to be changing every year. Usually they will get the P1 and P2s to perform what they learned at PAL lessons during school events. There is no extra charge for the curriculum lessons so far.
One more thing to add about Pei Tong is that they use the interactive white board to teach, making lessons more interesting.
With regards to canteen food prices, there is gonna be a change of the management in July and food will be sold in set meals priced lower than current ones. This is one of the feedback from parents which the school acted upon.
The Open House will be in held in July. It is good for parents to visit for an understanding of the general environment.
Just to emphasize again, Pei Tong has balloting for Phase 2C sup last year and there is a long waiting list for admission into P1 up to now. There are also some parent volunteers who will be eligible for Phase 2B this year. So you might want to consider the probability when choosing schools.

      tinywings:
Insider news is the past few yrs psle results, majority of the P6 students gotten into normal (tech). Most of the pupils are weak in maths, due to weak foundation during P1 & 2, as i heard that most teachers in P1n 2 not experience n too laid back.

of coz there are also very bright students in the best clasd, but reason why psle results so bad is becoz those very bright students are transferred to GEP schs after P3.
      Tinywings,

I wonder where u get the 'insider' information from regarding Pei Tong Primary School. The past 2 years PSLE results have improved and 2012 has the best result with top student scoring 266 entering RGS. There are 5 students who scored more than 260, a 500% improvement from 2011. P1 registrations have been full for the past 2 yrs. In 2012, balloting was required for Phase 2C Sup and there is a long waiting list for transfer into Pei Tong. There is also an increase in Parent Volunteers these 2 years who will be eligible for Phase 2B. The P1 FT will follow up to P2 which is important to both parents and students. They are professional and committed, definitely not laid back. There is a clear and systematic channel for any feedback, so parents comments will be heard and if reasonable, acted upon. This is my personal experience with the school.
GEP students will have to be transferred to GEP schools since Pei Tong does not offer GEP. The same goes to the other schools in the same area other than Nan Hua.
