some workers arranged chairs in 18 short rows and 7 long rows.
each long row had 32 more chairs than short rows.
half of the chairs were arranged in long rows while 3/7 of the chairs in short rows.
remaining chairs are stacked in a corner.

How many chairs were arranged in rows?

      Hi

      Long rows (LR) ------ 7 units (1/2 of 14)
      Short rows (SR) ------ 6 units (3/7 0f 14)
Stacked up chairs ------ 1 unit

      6 units ------ 18SR
      1 unit ------ 3SR

      1LR ------ 1SR + 32
      7LR ------ 7SR + (7*32) ------7SR + 224

You may use MD to compare
      7SR + 224 ------- 18SR + 3SR
      14SR ----- 224
      1SR ----- 16
      \t
      1 unit ---- 3SR ----- 48
      13 units ----- 13*48 -------- 624

Number of chairs (rows) ------ 624

      Best wishes

thank you so much tianzhu. :salute:

      Hi SaPan,

yes, you can also solve such questions using the units and parts approach ie algebra... by the way, model approach is algebra in visual form.

      cheers.
thanks again MathIzzzFun, I'll try and solve it using the unit and parts ways. 🙂

      Dear uncles/aunties,

pls help me with this question.

At first, Kumar has only $5 notes and Devi had only $2 notes.
The number of notes Kumar had is 2/3 of Devi's notes.
When Devi gave Kumar $80, he changed all the $80 to $5 notes.
Then the number of notes Devi has now is 1/10 more than Kumar.
How many notes does Devi have at the end?

At first assume Kumar has = 2n notes
Then Devi has = 3n notes

      $80 = $2 x 40 = $5 x 16. So Devi lost 40 notes and kumar gained 16 notes

      so new ratio = 3n-40: 2n+16 = 11:10

      10(3n-40) = 11(2n+16)----> 30n -400 = 22n + 176 ---> 8n = 576-->n = 72

      So Devi at the end = 3n-40 = 72x3 - 40 = 176

      HTH.

      thank you so much ifruit!
again, you made it look so easy.

      Hi Phankao, Justmama,

I was at the Open House tour today with DS and DD. Although I admit I was not so impressed with the facilities ( Music, Science lab, etc ) and the basic classrooms, I can understand that NJC is not a private sch so we cannot expect the same luxurious impressive settings from those like RI. However, I must admit, I am totally impressed by all the JH1 volunteer student helpers !

Manners, presentation, confidence, comradeship, bond/friendship were all very apparent to see. And the most important virtue of all, humility. Every student were friendly, helpful and absolutely unassuming. No airs, no high nose, no boastfulness, etc.

The boarding school ground floor area and facilities looked quite nice, and I guess $175 for 7-8 weeks stay, inclusive of 2 meals, it's not a bad deal, hahaha.

The boys I spoke to, especially, all displayed comradeship and confidence and ever willing to share their experience, and not one of them was even remotely boastful about themselves. In fact, they expressed thankfulness for getting into NJC on scores of 257 to 260.

The open session with the principal, vice principal and the respective heads were also very assuring and shows that they care for the students.

The only qualms I have are that they have no uniform groups ( because i want my DS to be in NCC ), the ongoing construction AND the crazy ratio of 3 to 4 girls to one boy in every class ! I thought it was like 2 to 1, like Dunman High. I think it would be very distracting to teenage hormone raging young males, LOL.

But it was an okay impression, not as impressive as RI of course, but nice to see the students all showing confidence yet humility at the same time. RI may have some students who are too full of themselves I think - the elitist attitude. But I guess this comes from the wealthier parents, maybe - pls don't flame me for this comment, it's just a personal view.

Though my boy has a CO from NJC and DHS, he still hopes to go RI ( waitlist ), but I am relieved to know that if he does not get in, there is a nice place to nuture him as well at NJC.

Well done, parents of NJC JH1 students. :celebrate:
      Hi Strparent,
