    • RE: Advice needed for GEP parent and child

Hey Hey, my boy is currently in GEP Program P5 and he was the only student selected from the neighbourhood school he was at then. He was never the top student in the class, and has no tuition in P3, P4 and P5 (H1). We gave him the choice of entering the program and he decided to go for it.

He isn’t currently in the top of his class but also not in trouble with his teachers to get himself into remedial lessons. He shared with me half the class went for remedial lessons. I am pretty happy that he is able to cope independently.

From my observation, the exposure he got from the program is pretty good. They practiced mind mapping for a couple months in P4. Their essays are a thousand words? They do poetry, they do blogging with their English teacher and are kind of forced to manage their own emails and softcopy documents like working adults. I never get to see their math papers though. I must say that their teachers are also many times more engaged and responsive than most of the teachers he had in P3 and before. They even respond on weekends within the day … which I didn’t expect them to. As long as the kids can cope, I feel the 3 year exposure is pretty awesome and we are only paying a nominal primary school fee here to get all these extras. The best thing is, he has less idle time at home now. Getting 70+ is pretty common too and it’s no longer the 80+ or 90+ we use to see.

My problem with the GEP entry was our logistics administration. Our home is kind of far from all the GEP schools. In the end, a school quite a distance from our home was assigned to the boy and the school bus service provider didn’t want to serve our location initially. Fortunately, MOE jumped in to help here, but it was still painful with the kid needing to endure an hour + bus ride each trip.

Do continue to encourage your kid, this is just a small hill to climb which will give them the experience to overcome bigger challenges in future.

How many Nanyang students passed GEP this year?
I think they mentioned 25 from internal.

Hi guys, does anyone know the chances of transferring an external student into NYPS via GEP? Any past statistics available? Thanks.

mine comes in a transparent plastic sheet. No envelope. It came as a pleasant surprise as no preparation and only tuition was Chinese.

I can't help but got to chip in on a certain remark about being short-changed for not choosing the 'best' school. A majority of people tend to choose schools based on rankings, well that's human nature. No right or wrong because every individual has their own perception on what is the best. But to say shortchange for not choosing Raffles and another 2 named school which I can't remember..I was thinking how can anyone be shortchange for not choosing Raffles? I have a friend whose girl went Raffles but she doesn't like it. Everyone around her are fiercely competitive on results (of course not all are like this) so that I guessed she felt 'shortchange' instead for not having her own definition of enjoyable environment that will make her thrive further. Also note that when it comes to A level results, only around 30% of RJC students score a perfect Rank point of 90 (I would have felt shortchange for not choosing Raffles if 100% attained of the students there score perfect 90. Ha..ok..just joking)..I just want to tell all the parents out there..if you have a child that score well for PSLE, don't just look at the 'top 2'. Look for at least the 'top 15!' look into the culture of the schools, what is interesting about the schools' offering and what support the school will offer to the students if they faced difficulty..these factors are so important because these kids will be in teenager phrase. Give yourselves more choices. There might be pleasant surprises beyond the Raffles or HCI..I hope this will help in parents making wise decisions. After all, we all love our children don't we?
Great inputs! I feel it’s important to let the kids be the ones selecting their school and make them be accountable for their selections.

We let our DD run thru numerous schools’ live zoom or recording and create her own priority list, and as parents, we just inform her that we are behind her decision. She said no 3rd language and we said OK, you know yourself best, so no problem! Let’s do that!

This is an early cross road and their life journey just started. There will definitely be many unique roads leading to Rome!

      Of course !
      feelings can go, both ways.

      Some P6 students,
having been turned down / rejected by their DSA school,
are not even interested in appealing back to the same old school anymore. Analogy ?
Is like u attend a job interview & they turned u down, so u accept the verdict & move on to some other company to work in,

while others, those who received either

(whose Wait-list Not been converted into CO, but at least they have been offered a Wait-list,

      or
      received Rejection) ,
will still proceed ahead to try appeal.

( to highlight, the different group of feeling )
Your first scenario described my DDs decision. Turned down for DSA by RGS and SCGS. Now applying for NYG and St Nics IP instead. No talent so use brute force. LOL.
