Maybe can you tell us where did those balloted out AL 8 students eventually go to? Coz later a well groomed mum might come in and said why short change themselves go school with cop more than 8. Wasted.... Cxxxx SXXX groom their girls differently(For boys Vxxxxxxx, Cxxxxxxx, Sxx etc) ....cannot compare other non IP schools imo. -

I can’t help but got to chip in on a certain remark about being short-changed for not choosing the ‘best’ school. A majority of people tend to choose schools based on rankings, well that’s human nature. No right or wrong because every individual has their own perception on what is the best. But to say shortchange for not choosing Raffles and another 2 named school which I can’t remember…I was thinking how can anyone be shortchange for not choosing Raffles? I have a friend whose girl went Raffles but she doesn’t like it. Everyone around her are fiercely competitive on results (of course not all are like this) so that I guessed she felt ‘shortchange’ instead for not having her own definition of enjoyable environment that will make her thrive further. Also note that when it comes to A level results, only around 30% of RJC students score a perfect Rank point of 90 (I would have felt shortchange for not choosing Raffles if 100% attained of the students there score perfect 90. Ha…ok…just joking)…I just want to tell all the parents out there…if you have a child that score well for PSLE, don’t just look at the ‘top 2’. But at least look at the ‘top 15!’ look into the culture of the schools, what is interesting about the schools’ offering and what support the school will offer to the students if they faced difficulty…these factors are so important because these kids will be in teenager phrase. Give yourselves more choices. There might be pleasant surprises beyond the Raffles or HCI…I hope this will help in parents making wise decisions. After all, we all love our children don’t we?

However, it's impossible to know whether \"the balloting odds are heavily stacked against them\" since we do not know how many are balloting or have to face the ballot. In some years, it could be a lot of people balloting for a few places (bad luck), while in others, could be only a handful of people balloting for nearly the same number of places (good luck). As long as you have a good plan, and second or third choice, just ballot and try your luck. If you don't spend a dollar to buy a quick pick, how can you expect to win the Group 1 prize? -

We let our DD run thru numerous schools’ live zoom or recording and create her own priority list, and as parents, we just inform her that we are behind her decision. She said no 3rd language and we said OK, you know yourself best, so no problem! Let’s do that!
This is an early cross road and their life journey just started. There will definitely be many unique roads leading to Rome! -
No doubt better results give one more choices at each crossroad, but let’s not be limited by what we see and think, especially when considering the options available for our children. Whoever says only X Y or Z schools provide best grooming for our children probably has something else on their minds. The new economy in the future needs people who can create, not just duplicate. The duplication work - we can leave it to the robots, and these are the jobs that will be replaced by these machines. So let’s aim to teach our children to create, especially to create new pathways for themselves.
Maybe parents should ignore those who spread fear by telling us that we are shortchanging ourselves by not doing this or that for our kids’ education. There is a conspiracy theory that claims those who tries to spread the idea that certain top schools are the best might either be alumni, or parents whose children managed to get into these schools - who wants to ensure their alma mater is forever “elite” so that they can continue to be associated with a good name? (but honestly I do hope my children will be proud of who they become, and not which school they came from). Or these could also be motivated workers at different segments of the education ecosystem (think private tutors, tuition centers) who spread fear so that the need for tuition is justified and their financial objectives are met. If everyone sends their children to an “easy to manage” school, there is no employment and business opportunities for them.
No offence to those described above, as I respect everyone has a role to play (and a job to keep) in the education ecosystem, but I think most parents are discerning enough to sniff them out. :siam:
A good school is a school that suits our child. A competitive child who has already given their all, might be able to swim more freely (less mental stress) in a smaller pond and excel when they are ready. The dreamers who keeps their talents under wraps might rise to the occasion when “forced to” in a competitive environment.
The key is really about which school can bring out the best in them. Have seen kids who went into a school “worst” than their t scores or AL scores for reasons like personal preference or location/convenience, and they blossom. A reminder to parents - edusave awards are still given out in sec schools for top 10% or top 25% in their school cohort - some kids thrive with these encouragements rather than struggling among the giants.
We have to help our children find their balance. Don’t let that little soldier of yours lose steam so early in the game. Psle is only the beginning. Good luck. -
