Have you seen the onsponge books? Useful?
Yes, I also used Onsponge books. Slight overlap with GMT. But these 2 sets complement each other very well.

May I ask, is your eldest P6? Wondering how useful for psle if it’s so tough? It is leaning towards MO or IQ type of questions?
I am also a fan of Get Me Thinking books. Not MO questions, just challenging problem sums. Very useful for PSLE. My DD did not have any tuition and we found GMT very useful. However, do note that GMT does not cover all topics, only those topics that usually come out for problem sums. So you would need to supplement with other materials for Paper 1 type of questions.

Thank you for your views.

I spoke to both MOE staff and kids from Catholic Hgh. So it is specific information. This was last year and things would have changed. In the past kids did get in with G5 and G6.

I understand that these kids may not have got it via DSA.
DSA MEP selection and MEP selection for S1 cohort differs greatly. My info might be a bit outdated as they were from pre-covid days. But CHS DSA MEP selection - boys were asked to sit for a theory test of G5 and G6 standard. They also need to perform 2 contrasting pieces. If you want to get a guage of the standard of the audition performance, you can check out the annual National Piano and Violin Competition. Similar to the standard you hear at those competitions.

But for S1 cohort, those interested in MEP, their selection test and audition will be much easier. So yes, G5, G6, no problem. If they take MEP, they will need to take Music as a subject for O level (regardless of whether they are in IP or O level stream). However, they do not need to continue with Music for A level if they choose not to.

For those who are passionate about Music, MEP is a great program. It goes way beyond playing an instrument. And most students in MEP I know really enjoy the program.

I am not trying to dissuade you or your child from trying for MEP through DSA. Just wanted to share with you what you might encounter should you try this path.

I went to MEP workshop conducted for primary school students. The kids got in with G5 and G6 when they are in Primary 6. With volunteers from a top school in Central Singapore. The Sec 3 student volunteers were just embarking on G8 and Diploma. Ofcourse the very talented are always there.

I understand we have very little chance. But try anyway. Nothing to lose.

Btw, MEP has nothing to do with your Grade. They don't teach any instruments and they expect you to learn outside on your own. Ability of play an instrument is one thing and sitting through Music History and Literature classes in MEP and creating and editing soundtracks is altogether completely different.
I was not talking about profile of MEP kids, I was talking profile of kids who received CO under Music domain for DSA. Most schools give out 1 to 2 COs per year for Music domain. Which means 1 to 2 COs for all instruments (both Western and Chinese instruments, and including Voice). Hence the competition is extremely stiff. However, once you are already in the school, it becomes much easier to qualify for MEP. The minimum requirement is G5 practical and G3 theory (if I remember correctly).

Someone commented above that their child with G6 Distinction couldn't get Violin DSA but got Visual Arts DSA. Others have G8. I wonder if these kids are prodigies.

My kid is G4 distinction, about to take G5 in April, but results may not be out before DSA application and we are still trying. Took 4.5 years to reach this level. First 2.5 yrs was very slow learning with only G1 completed. Then got interested and moving faster.

The teacher doesn't allow to move forward if he is not confident that the kid can cope. Until now only took G4 exam as we didn't want to spend too much on exams. We go to Cristofori btw.
The profile of kids who get CO for MEP or Higher Music - finished G8, most already doing diploma. Have national or even regional/international competition experience.

lol no idea my kid hasn't reached that stage but if reddit is anything to go by, the early admissions seems to be by stages and offers can be received from before A levels to after results are released?
Not sure about PSC though, whether you have to apply to be considered.

Any JC1 parents here? This year's orientation seems to be very very fun, with no more Covid restrictions.
DD enjoyed the orientation, lost her voice completely towards the end but extremely high. I think this year C1 batch is very lucky to be able to enjoy all the activities without covid restrictions.

If PSC Scholarship recommendation mainly looks at JC1 promo results, that’s very stressful :nailbite:
as orientation just ended and it is already end of Feb!

Is it true that for law/medicine courses, JC1 promo results are very important too? Or only look at A levels results?
I do find the 2 years in JC to be like school life on steroids. It's like 1st 6 months chiong CCA, next 6 months chiong exams (BT, Promo, PW). C2 chiong A levels. Really chiong all the way.

Mainly referring to PSC Scholarships. Psychometric tests should be ongoing now for the C2 so yes the recommendation mainly based on C1 promo results.

May I ask when will the J2 receive any emails from Uni with regards to any scholarships or early admission offers? Is it to certain students who perform very well in block tests or only Prelim? Any kids who successfully receive EA or recommend fm HCI based on what kind of grade or portfolio?

I read from reddit that somehow some students got 90 RP or 80 above was not recommended by their top JC; while surprisingingly some students got below 80 RP received email fm NUS/NTU for EA. Is it true? Any parents can shed some lights on their kids' experience of receiving any offers (based on their results/any contribution to school etc)?
I believe this is something you can ask the ECG teachers? My understanding is that the recommendation for scholarships application is based on C1 results. Not so sure about EA though.
