RE: All About Choosing and Buying Pianos
Ikid:
Thanks Ikid for the link and your advice.Read this http://pianoteachersfederation.org/Digital_vs_Acoustic
When taking ABRSM, the students will be using the acoustic piano, so personally, I will buy the acoustic piano.
Many parents buy 2nd hand piano as they are not sure if their kid is serious in taking up piano lessons, so in any case the kid gives up, at least you don't feel heartache after spending so much in the purchase. I have seen parents bring their piano teacher to test the 2nd hand piano to check if the condition is ok. If owners tune the piano regularly, 2nd hand pianos are good for beginners.

RE: All About Choosing and Buying Pianos
Hi, I am thinking of getting a piano as my dc is taking lesson in Yamaha. My budget is about 4-5K. I would definitely prefer a new piano. A parent of my dcās classmate advised me to get a digital piano. However, in my heart, I still prefer an acoustic piano.
I would greatly appreciate if someone can advise me the pros and cons of :~
1) acoustic vs digital piano
2) U1 vs Clavinova
3) new vs used piano (I totally know nothing about a piano)
Thank you ! -

Hey ! You have summed it all so graciously and aptly!

We have just received DHS letter and is sad to say DC is unsuccessful. As the mummy, I am disappointed and in fact seems more disappointed than DC is. But I am glad that at least DC got pass the GAT and into the interview stage. At least we, both parents and child, got to experience the whole DSA process. It's just a waste that DC didn't get a CO and not even on WL. Maybe some parents might said 'Oh, to say that experience is the part that counts is just consoling yourself to cover up the disappointment.' But we don't care and yes we are disappointed. Which parents don't ? However, one thing we are happy about is that when we told DC the unfavourable news and passed DC the letter to read, we can see the disappointment look was held back. But DC is brave enough to say, \"It's OK lah. Try again by PSLE result lor.\" Be it is a cover-up, we are still glad that at least DC didn't say or complain anything negative. :rahrah:
SO, this is the closure of our DSA chapter. Hope our DC strive extra hard in the PSLE to get into the dream school.
U hv a brave child....
Disappointment is inevitable...but what's impt is never be discouraged...continue to strive hard towards one's goal...tcdl:

Like both posts from Fresco and Wonderm. :goodpost:
Well said.Fresco:
Parents
Please stop all these baseless analysis and market talk of how schools decide on their choice of applicants to the DSA exercise and how many placements are given to GEP/MS and the speculations of conversions from WLs to COs. Stop questioning why so and so received COs and why the other brighter sparks do not. You are all speaking from hindsight. It's amazing how 'people NOT in the know' are talking so much more than 'people in the know'. Of course 'people in the know', I believe, are not supposed to reveal anything. So all the noises we read here are from 'people NOT in the know'. Well, stop feeding ideas into other parents if you have nothing concrete to offer, but assumptions and conjectures.
You need to understand that each school has their own criteria or standards to meet in order to award the offer to the most eligible or deserving applicant. It is to their discretion on deciding who is successful and who's not in the DSA exercise. If you parents are taking great pains to look for a school that fits your child, likewise the schools are earnestly looking for students who fit their school's requirements and students who can contribute to and uphold the school's vision, taking them to greater heights. You need to respect that. They have seen and interviewed the DSA applicants, not you parents here. So, do not make assumptions and criticism on the choices the schools have made. Have more faith in the system if you want to participate in the DSA exercise, if not, don't even go into it to spare yourselves and your children uncalled stress, anxieties and heartache.
Learn from your children who either get COs or none at all. Their hearts are simple and pure. Believe me, they are the ones to take it well whatever the outcomes is for the DSA, not their parents.
I'm sorry if I have offended you but this what I really need to say.
Actually I noticed not that many parents of the \"affected kids\" voiced out here. It seem to be other parents who felt it was \"unfair\" on their behalf. :?
Anyway I agree with you. For people whom haven't seen the actual results and CV and actual interview performance of the many applicants, it is no point to second guess the school's decision.

And here to all parents whose ....
~ DC got the CO, :congrats:
~ DC on WL, best of luck for the conversion to CO :xedfingers:
~ DC unsuccessful, don't be despair, work harder and get the good grades for entry to your dream school. GO, go go !!! :rahrah: :boogie: :imcool:
~ Lastly, DC got CO & WL, you have CO and WL, why still complain and speculate when other DCs don't even get any. Spare some thoughts ...
That's all ... å ę²¹å§ ļ¼ļ¼ļ¼
Does anyone know if the child is called up for the 1st trial after the GAT it meant the child managed to meet the GAT minimum requirement of that DSA school ?
:scratchhead: May I know if there is anyway of knowing what is the minimum GAT requirement of the DSA school ? And where we can find out the child's GAT result ?
:thankyou:
GAT is defined as a form of psychometric test.
\"The GAT is a standardized assessment of an applicant's general reasoning ability, and it measures learning capacity, observational skills and problem solving ability.\"- lifted from http://www.gat.sg.
The scores are 'meaningless' to us unless you can decode it. Different schools will also have differing set of requirement for GAT as they are looking for different qualities in the child.
Please see below, something that I have lifted from internet too.
It seems that you may not be able to study for it.
\"Psychometric testing is conducted to analyse a person's reflex responses to stimuli, conditions, situations etc... within varying parameters. That is why these tests with many questions repeating themselves numerous times. But, each time they repeat, they are written with subtle variations from the previous and ensuing instances.
So, the idea is to mainly gauge the person's consistency for each category of questions by taking an average of all its instances with subtle variations.
In my opinion it is next to impossible to 'learn' how to do these exams. Because, by their very nature, they test reflex responses.\"
I believe the GAT score requirements is different under sports and academic. Hence there is no minimum requirement for GAT for a particular school.
Thanks Zulu ... -
