    • RE: Traffic at NYGS, NJC & RGPS @ Bkt Timah Rd & Eng Neo

It was a nightmare from Adam road to Bt Timah and Dunearn Road. It took me more 25 mins to get from Adam Road to MGS cos there was a jam all the way to Blackmore Road. Traffic from Adam and along Bt Timah road turning into NYPS and St Marg was slow moving. Traffic in the middle lane aft Hwa Chong was fairly smooth till just past 6th Ave. Rt lane along Bt Timah Road U-turn to RGPS/NYGH/NJC was very very slow moving. Traffic on extreme 2 left lanes rt aft 6th ave towards MGS was hardly moving. I took the back roads at Elm and Old Holland Rd to get to school but I was not the only parent who thot of this route. There was a jam along Old Holland Road leading to MGS as well! It did not help that it drizzled this morning and parents were extremely slow in dropping off kids. I am setting out earlier tomorrow! I think alot of kids were late for school.

    • RE: Choose Secondary school for 2010

MGSS has a special in-house gifted programme (SBC - Sophia Blackmore Class) for those who are able to take on a more rigorous route. There are 2 or 3 such classes in Sec 1-4. Each class size is abt 26. In order to get into this programme, you need to score 255 and above and sit for a selection test held at the school. For selection test date, I suggest you call the school to find out. It's a good programme cos the girls are prep well for the O levels as well as the IB programme (if they chose/qualify to take the IB programme at ACSI in year 5). Places are limited cos the MGS SBC Primary girls get priority if they meet the PSLE cut-off points.

MGS is a good Christian school that teaches good Christian values to the girls. Most of the girls speak impeccable English and are well-groomed. They specialise in music (MEP prog), performing arts(dance, choir and strings ensemble) and sports like swimming, tennis, bowling, golf, netball.

If you child is keen on a more rigorous academic route leading to O levels, it's a good school to consider. It has a balanced environment stressing both academic, social, physical and spiritual development.

SCGS - the admission criteria is almost on par with MGS. SCGS has a new principal on board and I was informed that she is very enthusiastic. I am not sure if they have an in-house gifted programme but I do notice the girls are well-groomed and speak good English. They are known to be really good in dance.

All things being equal and if distance is not an issue, I'll pick MGS over SCGS cos it has an in-house gifted programme and it's affiliated to ACJC (2 pts for O levels). Both schools have been rumoured to house \"rich\" kids but I think if you have raised a confident and self-assured kid, she'll have no problem fitting in at both schools.

    • RE: HAST TEST RESULTS (Pri school)

Direct School Admission (ie you get admitted to secondary school of choice based on a set of conditions prior to (and regardless of) the release of PSLE results.

    • RE: HAST TEST RESULTS (Pri school)

DSA submission is over for almost all schools. My DD had no intention of DSA then but took the test cos her school encouraged her to take it. Her results were favourable (top 10%) and I was wondering if for some strange reason, she does not do well in her PSLE, can I use this result for appeal in her current school. Can I also use this result for NUS High selection/admission in addition to her PSLE result?

    • RE: Europe Trip

Winter in Europe is grey…no greenery nor wild flowers. Not to mention, it’s also cold. But it can be beautiful too. And if you dress appropriately, it can be enjoyable.

Hols with kids can be possible but days are short and it can be wet too. I went to Italy with family (DH and 2 DDs aged 9 and 11) 3 years ago. It was a F&E self-drive hols and we even made a day trip to Munich in Germany for beer and sausages at Hofbrauhaus.

3 days in Rome, drove to Florence and Tuscany region, Venice and the Italian Alps (Dolomites) for skiing (tho there was too little snow then so the kids just played in the snow) and a day trip to Germany via Austria. The Dolomite region has a very "German" flavour and there were Christmas markets (day and night) in some towns. We stayed in the Dolomites for 4-5 days, I think.

In total, we had 11 -12 days in Italy. Not a rushed hols so it was very enjoyable.

    • RE: PSLE - New Format for Maths

Yes…my DD has moved on…now having last min chinese tuition to gear her up for tom. Let’s all recognize the efforts put in by our kids and cheer them on. They have worked hard and it should be good enough…at least for me.

Those were my DD’s answers. Not sure if correct. Marks in brackets are for the qns…not my DD’s score.

This is strictly from memory and the names may be incorrect. I cannot guarantee the info from my DH's memory is absolutely correct but for those who are interested, these are the qns:

      1. Mei and Lin were in a bicycle race. Mei was travelling at a constant speed of 20km/hr and they both did not change their speed. When Lin completed half the race, Mei was 3.5km ahead. Mei completed the race at 10.45am

What time did Lin complete the race?

      2. Joe bot some chocolates and gave some to Ken. Ken bot some sweets and gave some to Joe.

Joe ate 12 sweets and Ken ate 18 chocolates. The ratio of sweets to chocolates Joe had became 1:7 and the ratio of sweets to chocolates Ken had became 1:4.

How many sweets did Ken buy?
