OK, specifically, there are only two kinds of Group 2 'Modern Languages' courses you can take for the IB. These are 'Language B' and 'ab initio'. The former is perhaps somewhat similar in level to what we used to call 'AO' when we were in JC. This can be taken at higher level or standard level (main difference is 240 hours with more stuff or 150 hours with less stuff). The latter is something like 'foreign language'; this 2nd option is very low-level, meant to teach a completely new language to a student who's never encountered it before.


In the Singapore system, because of the bilingual policy, normally a student who does HCL and passes the O-levels wouldn't have any more MT requirement after that, while someone who does CL(2) will still have to pass it at H1 level in JC. For the IB it's a bit different. The IB has a second language (Group 2) requirement, so even if you pass HCL you must still do a second language—but it can be any language you want; many of my past students took an ab initio language such as German or Spanish, because those are practically useful or just fun to do.

If you only pass CL(2) at O-level, you still do Chinese B at Y5 and Y6.

He initially took HCL with the understanding that he need not do Chinese anymore in Year 5 and 6 if he got a pass. Whereas, if he were to take normal Chinese, he has to take Chinese in Year 5 and 6 no matter what. This is true for those doing the 'O' level and JC route if I understand correctly. I guess it's not true in the IB route? In which case I would support him to drop HCL for CL2 since he has better chance of getting a pass grade for the latter and he need not take CL2 in Year 5 & 6 if he chooses not to. Erm, am I correct in the above??

Hi, strictly speaking, if your son has passed an examination in a higher level of Chinese than CL2, he can't take CL2 in Year 5. But if he drops to CL2 before Year 4, he can. The whole point is that the IB doesn't want students to take a subject without learning anything new, and that would be the case if they took a lower-level CL after doing CL1/HCL!

Hi Autolycus,

My son told me that he is going to drop HCL next year in Year 3 as he wants to take Chinese as a second language in Year 5. Is it true that students taking chinese as their mother tongue all along can choose Chinese as a second language again in Year 5? And I heard from him there are two levels of Chinese in Year 5 and he intends to take the lower level one.
Could you enlighten me on this? Thanks so much!

Most of the homework are for Chinese. Sometimes, they do have Science, Maths or English homework, but it's not very often. If there is homework for the day, my son will usually take about half an hour or less to complete them. However, there are days when he has homework for multiple subjects - then he will take about an hour or so to complete them - but this only happens occasionally. So the homework is quite manageable. Mostly, the work is done during school hours.

Oops! Sorry! I'm talking about P4 homework. For P3, it is also very manageable - maybe just a little bit less than P4 load. I remember there were some days when there was no homework. This is one thing that I like about the school

Personally I find that twinning really helped my DS2 in his development , not only in school work.

He is learning a lot of history , geography, general knowledge in social studies, picking up computer skill in CEP lesson etc.

It's the best of both world. You do mainstream math, science and English, probably at a more advance level compared to the rest of the classes, but take same exams in these subjects.
The they join and take same CL/HCL as the GEP kids.
They take the GE social studies exam too even though it's not graded.

I agree. TAG class has its advantages such as smaller class size -25, better and nicer teachers according to my son. He does not want to go to mainstream class now cos he's really enjoying himself in TAG class
