• RE: Teachers to pay for parking at schools from Aug 1

Zeit:

Teachers do not 'homeschool' their pupils. They have a historical template, a instruction manual to follow, unlike parents who homeschool their dc at home have to cull resources and design their own syllabus.

Paid peanuts? I don't think so. From the age of 19, when they signed the contract, be it for bursary or scholarship, they had been paid an allowance to study at NUS or NTU, followed by NIE training. Their starting salaries are higher than civil servants with uni degree in other ministries and even stat boards. Teachers went in with eyes wide open.

It's unfair to compare this job is nobler than that...But if you insist, then remember there is a reason why teaching is not considered by law as an 'essential service'. During a war, natural disaster or national crisis, our armed forces personnel, security forces, healthcare personnel go to the frontline first to save lives. Teachers will stay at home or help in other forms because schools will be closed.

No life, no talk about nurturing of life. Save lives first.

\"Military personnel sacrificing his life to kill an enemy or more...maybe noble but not noblest.\"

No offence, but I disagree with this statement. :slapshead: I can't believe you worship and idolise teachers until you can think along such warped lines. If the military personnel was sacrificed because of destroying our enemies in a bid to defend our fortress, he is a martyr, and will be given the highest honor. Have you seen cenotaphs in many countries that glorify their martyrs and war heroes? Have you seen water cannon salutes at the airport before?

Use your head. It's merely a simple correction by AGO.
Eh...so, if a teacher was sacrificed in a bid to protect our children (rem the mount kinabalu incident), he/she is _____ ?

....a teacher who should teach according to instruction manual and not save lives?

It's been talked about for a while, so it's no surprise. There are many other civil servants who work long hours, far from home etc, and pay for parking.

Yes, it's all money talk, but I appreciate that in Singapore, it's open and \"clean\". In other countries, they don't talk about it, and it goes under the table and by connections.

Yes. I really don't understand why teachers always talk about the long hours. My conclusion is they have not worked in private sector before and are comparing with teaching hours a generation ago. But that is also not a fair comparison with other civil servants who as slmkhoo pointed out, work long hours, erratic weekends and pay for parking etc.

from 730am to 11pm...is it long?

• RE: Any Updates As To When PSLE T-Scores Will Be Scrapped?

sushi88:
Balloting has been there all this while.....it's just that PSLE is the worst 4-letter word ever in existence...for Singapore parents. Reason being at primary...parents still want to control... but come secondary....they are no longer capable of control for various reasons...so most kids would make their own choices....so parents forget \"O\" to JC is also balloting for tie-breaking.

But this balloting does not guarantee that you will be posted to the next choice if there is a tie in the earlier choice. It all depends on supply and demand and if you are lucky you got your 1st choice. If unlucky you might be posted to a school far from your place.

This is the stress that those who had gone throughout balloting in p1 could identify. Balloting for a place in primary school is slightly better as you know your chance and could decide if you want to take it. Else go for the next nearest school.

But the new psle system, what do we know....only the points.

grapevine:

The good thing is that our kids who go to P1 next year will be the second batch to come under the new scoring system. At least we can see how the system affects the older batch of PSLE kids.

I feel it is better than the previous system. Similar to O levels now. No top kid, only top scorers like O level.
The secondary schools will be ranked according to their cut off scores like JC's.

:goodpost: And I don't think I have seen anyone accused the O levels and A levels as not being fair and should go more towards to current PSLE instead.

Well unless primary school kids take 7-8 subjects like the O-levels. Or their content base as heavy as A-levels? I don't see the purpose of using point system for psle which has only 4 subjects and for some only 3.

And to get into a secondary school of your choice is not entirely by merit but elements of luck is needed. :faint:

 How about applying balloting in sports arena? The winner will be decided through balloting if both teams have the same score.

• RE: Compare RGS vs NYGH

BlueBells:
My personal take away from having tried DSA to both NYGH and RGS, and having been through the rounds two years back, is that if the school is very confident that the candidate will be able to enter through PSLE T-Score, they might give the opportunity to another candidate whom they believe has potential to grow with the school too.

This is because the first candidate will be able to join the school through her T-Score, and the DSA spot offered to the second candidate will allow for diversity.

To me, DSA is to allow the school to offer places to pupils who might fall short of the cut-off points; but whom the school would like to have and groom.
I have different views. If dsa were for those who fall short of the cut-off, many many neighbourhood students out there also fall short of it.

So students who fall short of the cut off and not selected or not participating in dsa need to compete with those whose academic is very good but not offered dsa? Then wont the COP for top schools/IP programe be driven up and cause more stress?

Can lah, can still think of shit to stir. Let me try....

Who cares if NUSH is not managed by MOE. Their P also MOE staff, no? Just like who cares if R/HCI schools are independent.

1) Why do they take in 90-100% students from dsa and left so little or remaining slots for 2nd round students?
xfx , outdated info, lah - NUSH to take 100% DSA from this year .
2) Don't majority who got in through 1st round have support from parents...be it parents who are able to teach Maths/Science by themselves or rich parents who are able to send them to MO/SO training?

3) Why cant NUSH take in certain percentage students via dsa like other IP schools and let those who have gotten A* in Maths/Sc in psle apply using their grades. Likely these children also have a flair and passion in Math/Sc, just that they are not being polished by their \"incapable\" parents.
I believe that it is NUSH's belief that an A* in science/Maths is not mandatory for a

passion/flair/aptitude for science/maths. Not all students who are thru DSA get an A* for Science and Maths. And they do fare pretty very well in the school curriculum.

Is there a lot of 'shit' stirred about NUSH's DSA selection criteria favoring GEP or right kids? :?

And pirate is right, NUSH's intake is much lesser than other IP schools, yet the GEP/MS ratio is not that skewed.
Probably is that NUSH could take in 100% (thanks pirate) dsa whereas other IP schools could not. If they could I think there may be lesser shit lor. :siam:

LOL, you are the last person I expect to stir shit.. 😄
I, for one, believe that every school knows their curriculum best and knows the best process to recruit their students. For MOE to \"uniform\" everyone is somewhat a bit ridiculous too because the reason why we have the various offerings, it is to cater to the various patterns of the kids. MOE is providing the buffet of choices, but everyone wants the dish to be served the same way. Funny.

NUS High is precisely the right institution to groom kids who know very well they want to focus on Math and Science after PSLE and gifted in these areas, i.e. whether GEP or not. Now there is even an SST, the \"O\" level version of NUS High. It recruits 100% by DSA too, why no one \"stirs shit\"? 😉

As to who cares if RI/HCI are independent? MOE should care what their mission is and balance on how much to interfere.

If I were a foreigner, I would love to come to Singapore and enjoy the buffet of education choices for my kids to lead to Rome. Somehow we do not know how to appreciate our own system enough.
No intention to stir shit so not countering your reply. 😄 Just find that those shit were merely repetition. Can be applied in all situations.

Then one day another forummer stir shit and post how come IP students can promote to Y5 without taking O level unlike the other 90% then how? Abolish IP?

Then another shit stirrer post why NUSH students can take uni modules from Y1 onwards while the other 99.9% cannot then how? Abolish NUSH?

As long as there's vested interest, hard to please everyone.

1. The GEP shit has stirred for too long. It is used as an reason to put pressure on MOE only.
2. Until today, people do not use IP to scream unfair...people see IP as hope to uni-bound track so to demolish hope is unlikely.
3. NUSH is not managed by MOE, they are partners only and NUSH does not have mass appeal due to its focused scope in Math and Science

Anyway \"Abolish GEP\" is food for thought. Everyone seems to want it but doesn't seem to know how to value it in the right way.
