I made the same observation on page 251:
I did warn you guys at Page 235 of this thread.pirate:
To all parents balloting. If your child's ping pong ball number is in the middle of the range, don't forget to give the cage a hard spin or three to mix the balls up real good if you don't want to see a disproportionate number of balls on both ends of the range dropping out of the wire cage! :stupid:
Don't worry about the cage. MOE can afford to buy more.
Only in my case, the balls went into the cage in such a way the middle range was practically completely left out.
\"As to the balloting mechanism - I noticed today that if your ball is off to one side (stop sniggering at the back) then it won't get into the selection channel for the bucket to pick it up. Some major swirling of the pool of balls is required. Probably effects ballots with small numbers more, but it was alarming waiting for our ball to move back to the selection channel (in the middle) - which it did, thankfully, some 80% through the ballot.\"
I can't believe that the order in which the balls are placed into the barrel has any effect and even if it did, it'd still be random.
However, while it shouldn't statistically affect the outcome, knowing your ball happens to be out of the \"selection channel\" from the outset is something you either quietly accept or not. And if not - if you can influence events, by all means try i.e. by calling for more mixing before the next ball selection. Luckily our picker did jumble up the remaining balls eventually.
But you have to pretty much accept that a ballot is out of your control; stay focused on the things you can control. -

not involved in any balloting today....but juz curious, who spins the balls? randomly chosen parents, or is there a system?
i believe it defers from school to school.
in my case in phase 2B, parents were invited to assist. one parent did the spinning & drawing tha ball and another parent made the announcement and projecting the number on the ball to the screen for all to see. -
micollh:
school teacher/admin spins the wheels..
i see....but the discussion by KS parents seems to suggest tat the parents do the spinning....anyway, if fated, will go in no matter wat n vice versa....even the supposedly lousy schools can produce high psle scorers, so it's not all hopeless, i feel -

There's nothing much funny about seeing your child's ping pong ball has no chance of being selected - because it's out of the central channel - and the picker is not mixing up the balls between picks. Not funny at all.No.... It not the parents who do the spinning
And also what makes some ppl think that parents have the authority to do the spinning or even suggest to give the cage a hard spin ??
Damn funny
Who wouldn't say something if they noticed this? -
A ballot is a ballot some will win some will lose
But why give this suggestion to ask parents give the cage a hard spin ?!
What I can think of is to politely ask the school admin/teacher in charge of spinning to spin harder or few more rounds.
Imagine if every parents request to spin it then who should the school select ? -
That y i said previously it is not fair system. Fate determined by a ball

Blessedwife:
regardless who does ths spinning, i don't see anything wrong with standing up and raising this concern and making a suggestion. a request for a more vigarious or energitic spin of the equipment allowing for a better shuffling to ramdomize the balls is an absolutely reasonable ask.No.... It not the parents who do the spinning
And also what makes some ppl think that parents have the authority to do the spinning or even suggest to give the cage a hard spin ??
Damn funny -
