      Fairy:

Take the top scorer this year; father - doctor, mother - ex-lawyer, even grandma is educated enough to teach her Chinese. No tuition? Having a lawyer-trained mother as a tuitor is superior enough.
Hmmm...er... definitely not the case with us... we have the same background but it doesn't help (must be different calibre!) There is NO WAY on earth I can coach my kids for PSLE. I get a headache just looking at P3 papers...

        Hi all,

I agree with Fairy to a certain extent about genes…i’ve seen it at work in the kids on my husband’s side…all are superb in math and with no tuition and nearly all except one in the GEP prog and were in n’hood schools. My own two? One hates math and is strong in languages while the other’s like her cousins, math scientist but kinda wooden in languages. So, i’m pushing like mad for math to one and languages to the other and meeting resistance all the time.
I don’t think those brilliant students are really left on their own. Their parents do keep close communications with them.
I agree with Clare too, cos I see my own brother’s kid, who’s had no pressure at all from his engineer father and chartered accountant mum, just crossing borderline in P1.He’s quite the zombie. Now they are panicking and asking around for tuition cos both, I think, don’t know how to teach. I guess the key is practice and corrections and more practice. My nephew was too used to an idle life with the tv and toys all the time…so now is the painful rehabilitation process. He cries everytime his parents want to do work with him. I feel sorry for him but i guess that’s life in Singapore.

lizawa, congrats! So, can you share some tips on how to help our kids prepare for psle? Your ds result is awesome.

          To Priskhipo. Agreed.

I agreed with Fiary feedback. I believe different principal will have different objectives. My son’s school has a new principal this year. This year, they did not produce any student above 275 but the principal was smiling and also presents the teachers to the students and parents with standing ovation.

They has set the record for percentages of A/A* for all subjects, the average t-score and set a record of more than 80 plus percent of students going express. The results is much better than some of the GEP schools. If you look at the school, they do not have a top scholars but they have improved every student which I think should be the main objective of the schools. They should not focus on individual results and improvements. The school also has about 5 to 10 students going to GEP every year in P3. Their top scholars might have been taken away during the GEP streaming.

I think we should look at the school preformance overall and not only at who has the top scholars, number of top scholars, etc…

Absolutely agree. But if MOE don't publish these stats, how to compare?

                Thanks.

I guess a good foundation and consistency in work help a great deal. Like most parents here, this kiasu mum also constantly monitors my children's work to make sure they can keep up with the school work. And lots of practice from past year papers.

Exactly! MOE only publish the names of 60 schools which have at least one student scoring more than 275. How is that going to judge whether that is a good school? You can just happen to have a good one out of so many bad ones and u still make the list!

Yuh... that's why we have to look at how consistent the schools are in grooming these top students over the years. If you keep churning out top students year on year... that can't just be by fluke.

But the better measure is still to look at overall passes.

Congratulations to all parents whose kids have fared well in the PSLE results! We share your joy too. Would someone kind be enough to share which enrichment centre you send your kids to. If home tutors were used would you care to give the tutors’ contact? This will benefit parents whose children are still 1-2 years away from PSLE. I have pm a few of you but none of you responded to me. Really hope you will share your tried and tested route which will save us the agony of trying out different tutors and enrichment centres.
