      Hi

Does anyone know what are the situation writing topics that will be covered for psle? For example email, letter writing, police report etc.
      Thanks.

Email and letter writing are the most commonly tested text types in the PSLE in recent years. Students also learn notice, postcard and report, but to a much lesser extent. Actually, there are not really significant differences between the formats of these. The key distinction the students learn is between formal and informal writing.

Most importantly, students must take note of the purpose and the audience of the writing.

          Need help on grammar exercises:

          1. But his load became much lighter when he _________ (start) to hire more people to help him oversee certain areas of the business.

          2. Although wearing school uniforms may project uniformity, pride, loyalty and quality among students, there are many schools worldwide that __________ not ___________ (adopt) this practice yet.

          3. While some believe that school uniforms tend to involve students more and make them feel like part of a team at school there are others who feel that the uniformity _________ (erase) the students’ individuality.

          4. Uniforms will not only prevent conflicts among peers, it will also reduce the amount spent on clothing as all uniforms ________ (look) the same year after year.

Appreciate answers and the relevant grammar rules.

          TIA

            1. ‘started’. Tense consistency of verbs.

            2. ‘have … adopted’. Use of present perfect to indicate that some adoptions have taken place without specifying particularly when.

            3. ‘erases’. Subject-verb agreement with ‘uniformity’.

            4. ‘look’. Subject-verb agreement with ‘uniforms’.

              For Q3 & Q4, can we use \"will erase\" and \"will look\"?

Q3. No. The passage discusses ongoing beliefs.

Q4. No. Firstly, ‘… as all uniforms…’ is a subordinate clause. We often write subordinate clauses in the present tense when the main clause is in the future. Think of this example:

You will obtain a high mark in the PSLE as you study hard.

Secondly, you want to capture the regularity of ‘… year after year’ and this is best done with the present tense.

I suspect, however, that most teachers and tutors would, in fact, accept ‘will look’.

In the Marshall Cavendish Grammar Handbook for P5 & 6, under chapter 13, practice 2 was a section on rewriting direct questions into indirect questions.

"How did the interview go?" asked Jamie’s mother.

                  The official answer is -

Jamie’s mother asked her how the interview went.

But I thought it should be -

Jamie’s mother asked her how had the interview gone.

                  Am I correct?

You are almost correct. It should be:

Jamie’s mother asked her how the interview had gone.

Thanks JoL111. No wonder I felt that my answer lacked something. 😂
