Indeed moving a motion in the House is a big deal - it signals to people that even if all our athletes had put in as much hard works as Schooling, ultimately, it's the gory of winning Gold that matter most (to the people in the House).zbear:
What is the big deal of passing a motion in Parliament to officially recognize JS achievement? What is the significance of this act? Does it change anything?
Why is it mandatory for JS to give back 20% ($200k) back to the Association when they didn't do anything for him? Isnt his training all these years in USA n will be for the next 4 years?
Passing motion is no big deal as you do that daily too in the loo.
Moving a motion in the House is a big deal. Perhaps people have momentarily forgotten that the Parliament is one of the 3 (sacred) organs of state under our Constitution: Executive (Elected President), Legislature (Parl and law-making) and Judiciary. As it was a historic win, first Olympic Gold in fact, it was only befitting that members accorded him the highest honour possible in the House.
Why did TCJ move that motion? A motion is a proposal for MPs to get something done or to express an opinion on a topic of interest. It's for the House, regardless of political party, to give formal recognition to JS really.
Note that this is not the first Olympic Schooling participated in; the first time, he didn't win and hence, no \"recognition\".
By winning gold medal, Schooling is already deemed a national hero by every one of us, is it really necessary for our politicians to 锦上添花 ? -
Just read this interesting article

Joseph will be getting $650K after the mandatory amount given to some sports council. His parents spent $1.3 million over the past few years. How many can afford, and also willing to make this sacrifice?

No guarantee of success. 51 years only produce one gold medalist.
Most Singapore parents will think why not train to be a lawyer or doctor, no need $1.3mil, greater chance of success. A safer route. -

Every family will measure risk and reward differently. How they compare the value of letting a child try to live his dream (with the high likelihood of not achieving as great a success as hoped) and \"safety\" will differ from family to family. The difference between the long-term outcomes are not really as stark as many think - sportsmen have gone on to be successful entrepreneurs, coaches, etc, and also doctors, lawyers etc, and lawyers/doctors can also be less successful or unsuccessful, especially if they continued to feel \"cheated\" of the chance to try achieving their dreams. This feeling is also true for those who were shoe-horned into a \"safe\" career which they had little interest in.janet88:

Joseph Schooling 's Olympic gold medal is a black swan event and because it’s so rare and may not be replicated, that is why it’s so feted.
A lawyer or doctor doesn’t need to be a bigwig to be successful, with their professional skills, they can always earn a decent living. In this aspect, sportsmen are disadvantaged as they spend their best years training and not many can successfully transition to the corporate world.
Li Ning was able to parlay his competitive experience into commercial success but very few remember that one of his juniors, Zhang Shangwu ended up begging in Beijing subway.
Grooming talented children in sports is inherently a high-risk venture with very low probability of success. Out of love and faith, a parent may go the whole mile in supporting the child but the next parent, out of love and real concerns about the child’s future, may well decide on a different path. -

His parents paid that amount for his training/school in US...did any association pay a cent? yet now JS has to pay 20% of his gold winnings. That $650K is incomparable to the sweat, years of separation and tears that the Schooling family had to suffer. damn cheapskate to ask for $200K for not doing anything. What is the big deal of passing a motion in Parliament to officially recognize JS achievement?
