Comparing Pre-school English Reading and Phonics Enrichment
-
Heyya anxiousmummy123,
I wud say the Montessori Phonics is good for me,
cause the materials used are all from concrete to
abstract. And its a whole complete syllabus of
Phonics blends, digraphs, reading and also the
written reinforcement on the sounds learnt each
week. For a K2 gal who has some foundation oredi
it should take only 10mths to complete, which she
can resume with Creative Writing or Reading Comprehension
class upon graduating from the Phonics programme.
If you find she does not learn well in a group due
to the age range, you can always request for a one
to one session at a slightly higher fee at the convenience
of the centre of your choice.
Making the effort to read to your gal daily mebbe a
bedtime story perhaps, will give you time to bond with
your girl one on one and also give you an insight to
her reading capability and also find out from her the
kind of books she likes to read.
On and off when you're free, you may bring her down
to our community libraries to borrow books or even sit
in their story time sessions as further encouragement
for her to read.
When she has made some improvement, motivate her
further by buying for her a book that she reali likes..
Some magazines are good too, like those from the
Charlie and Lola. My girls love those! There's reading,
craft ideas, stamping templates and even little craft
freebies..
If you are staying in the North side, Yishun or Woodlands,
you may PM me if you'd like a phonics teacher to run a
one to one session. A friend of mine does it.. Just gimme
a tinkle if you're interested.
Cheerios.
PS : Start early with your boy, now that you have made good
observation of his reading interest, ok!
It'll enhance his
reading abilities. -

I m staying near Tiong Bahru. Any idea which Montessori sch tat teaches phonics is gd, any contact? Another reason for the switch is, her current ICR is at Novena which is v inconvenient & time wasting just to & fro. I always thought tat my gal is v stupid & lazy but aft tis few days of \"quality time\" spend wif her, i notice tat she's happier hence in fact she knows i lot & can do her work v well. (Meaning, when she has gd mood she'll do her tings nicely so tat she'll be praise)I just started d bedtime reading wif her & noticed she can read most of the 3 & 4 letter words. BTW for K2, hw many letter words are they expect to know? My gal fancy disney princesses, so I just went to Page 1 & bought a Disney Princesses Essential Guide book yest hoping to build her interest in reading first. (Tat bk so ex abt $27.00) Anyway, i have the book gift wrapped up & told her tis is the REWARD which she'll receive if she hit the no. of stars for her reward chart nx wk. Tat way, she'll strive harder to obtain more stars for her Behavior Reward Chart. I also started bringing her to the library to catch the story telling session & borrow books she likes.Heyya anxiousmummy123,

Heyya anxiousmummy123,
Tiong Bahru Plaza has this plc called CS Montessori.
I don't know if the centre is still there but i'm just
quoting somewhere near your plc.
There's and MMI at Bt Merah, dunno if that's near too.
For both centre, i cannot personally vouch for them...
Like chop plus guarantee kinda thingy cos i have never
visited the centres and don't quite know how their classes
are run...
For your boy, ermmm, how old again?
Letterland Phonics is also good, esp for toddlers and above.
It's best if conducted in a Tumble Tots centre cos they offer
Phonics 1hr and 30mins for gym play, if i am not mistaken.
You may check with a licensed Tumble Tots operator near you.
Letterland Phonics is complete with colourful teaching aides,
complete curriculum and worksheets from the UK and also
comes with many interesting catchy songs to reinforce phonetic
sounds and its combinations. The phonics characters stories also
help children learn more words for their vocabulary bank related
to the sounds learnt each week.
Run thru' with a few plcs and take your pick. If they allow you to
view lessons in action even better so you may assess the right
teacher to the temperament of your children...
Its good to find out how long it will take to finish their whole pgrm
whichever phonics ctr you choose. Ask them at the end of it, what
wud your children be capable of and whether there will be anhy other
hidden costs for reading books or stuff...
Hope this helps.. -
That day I was trying to teach my boy how to read words. One thing that came into my mind. Some words follow American and some British. for example, catalog and catalogue. We know that Catalog is USA spelling and Catalogue is English.
How do we explain to the kids? -
I just tell my kid there are 2 standards being used in the world. Just like cars, some drive on the left, some drive on the right. Like in baking measurement, some measures in cups, some in ml or weight, some in kg, some in pounds. In Chinese writing, there is simplified vs traditional. And money…all also money but different names, SGD, USD, Baht… etc… There are so many examples…they just need to know SINGAPORE accepts which standard.
So my kid reads all genre of books/magazines with both USA and UK publications. So far no issue with spelling because it is my duty to tell her the standards difference and her duty to check the dictionary which is the one used in SINGAPORE for her spelling purposes. However, if the word is covered in her weekly spelling spells, she should become aware which is the correct one. It takes a process to master nuances but conceptually they should be aware what standard means. -

Good ratio > Preferably, teacher student ratio of 1:6 is fantastic. In my
personal opinion, shud not exceed 8 students in a class, max.
Class mix > K1 and K2 mixture is fine ( for me, at least ). Nothing good
or bad with this mix - teacher must be able to handle her class well in
order to cater to all children in her class. That being said, having N2 with
the K1 and K2's may not be such a good idea due to the maturity and also
the attention span difference with a younger age range.
If you are able to find a centre that can cater to only similar age students
per class, even better.. But, K1 & K2 put together shudn't pose too much
of a hindrance to class progress.
Hope this helps, GreenQ -
Thanks a lot buds!
8 students to 1 teacher.. Hmm... this ctr i think to send my kids there is double the size ley...
My kids r in K1. Wondering if they came back w/o any worksheet, how do we as parent get to know what has been teaching or learning in the class? I mean whether they waste 1 hr to learn juz a little things...
Wil they forget everything after the class? Am I worry too much??
I presume the K2 students have learnt some phonics skill while they were in K1. So if mixed them in same class with K1 students, wud it affect their progress? Or wud it affect K1 students as well ? Especially if the class size is abt 15 students! Any opinion?
:?
I am wondering whether worth to send my kids to this ctr... The class wil start soon. So i got to make decision soon... Big head. -
More than 8 students somehow is already a big group for me
(from a teacher’s point of view). Unless, if what you’re referring
to is, that the Phonics class is done by rote learning or teacher
directed session with all her schoolmates in the kindergarten…
Meaning everyone looks at the board and listens to the sounds
the teacher teaches at one go.
If its a separate lesson just for Phonics in one particular centre,
and double the number of kids… hmmmm… got more than one
teacher, perhaps?
If no homework worksheet brought home, usually have one sheet
already done in the centre which is brought home for your reference
and home reinforcement. Also, a good centre wud have a checklist
of sounds covered each week so parents can be kept updated as to
what have been taught so far in the centre.
Parents’ briefing after the lesson also helps. Parents can find out from
the teacher the sound taught for the day to help with reinforcements.
To me, there may not be sufficient time to go around making sure that
all the children have understood the lesson learnt, if the class is too big
a size… I have been forced to take 10 at one go. It is a challenge esp
since all children come from different backgrounds. I try to
accommodate the 10 children (can’t be helped - boss’ decision) the best
that i can, and also rope in the parents to assist with revision. As the class
is once a week for grouped lessons, home reinforcement is imperative… -
Really tks buds for your detailed reply! Feeling warm... hehe. And appreciate your opinion.

Yes, that is a special lesson for phonics in one particular ctr. PIC said depends the number of students. If too 'many', they wil hav more than 1 teacher. So i wil see how they going to conduct the class.
Thks!
