[PSLE MT] PSLE less weightage in Chinese / Mother Tongue

outsider:
I forgot the title of one very very old inidan movie. the moral of the story is:
Sorry tamarind.. I have to disagree with you....tamarind:
dimsum,
Thanks for posting this news. This is the front page news on the Zao Bao newspaper today. The Chinese news mentioned that many parents have sent in their feedback. My feeling is that Mr Lee is not in agreement with Mr Ng ?
他们都是穿着白色制服的。。他们很团结的。。。所接触的大多数是英语顶呱呱,华语讲不出的精英份子。 精英的后代也会有一天成为是精英, 国家注重的是他们。。。。。。。。

律师的儿子未必是律师
in the end, the lawyer's son turned to be a gangster.... -
verykiasu2010:
Our government 精英 has lost touch with the ground liao. What they hear or face everyday are those from upper English speaking class who wants a cut in MT. 三思而后行呀!this is getting more stupid by the day
they should instead spend the millions to go change / improve the teaching methods for the chinese language, employ more chinese language teachers who can deliver and know how to deliver. if their kids are good, they should be able to grasp it. if not, it simply means their kids are not as good as those who mastered all the subjects
changing the weightage is the most ridiculous way to solve the symptoms of the real problem - which is the teaching method -
Way2GO:
Don't this apply to all other subjects too???? I remember learning ABC when I was in P1. Multiplication and division were also introduced much later and not P2. As a whole, the competency level have moved on. This applies to Chinese as well.
This is true too.
rains is being selective in trying to support her argument

I did not say that only Chinese has its standard raised, just that I stick to the topic - MT.
Like what you all put forward and emphasised, Chinese has links to our culture and our all-important roots, while Maths and Science don't seem to have as strong cultures and roots for us. So doesn't it make sense to lower weightage for MT to help children, who are not as strong in the language, enjoy learning it, together with its culture, literature, history and roots, better? For children who are not at that standard, Chinese become something unattainable, and further alienate them from their culture and roots. By lowering the weightage, they might find Chinese at a more attainable level, then they might enjoy learning Chinese, and from there, build a better foundation for trailing their culture and roots!
See? You people do support the lowering of weightage for MT - Chinese specifically!

I would have to disagree on this statement. Not sure which yester-era are you from. Anyway, my DS got a A for his Chinese in last year PSLE. Chinese is his weakest subject and for obvious reason he is happy and we are all happy for him. But, if I were to compare his level of Chinese standard (so call an A by today's MOE measurement) with my era, I could safely say his is probably a C at best. He also took HMT in primary school by the way.
When I look at my kid's textbooks, they are clearly of a much higher level than when I was in primary school.
Chinese standard in Singapore has definitely been deliberately lowered over the years but standard on other subjects are on the up. How much lower do we want? To a level that even an ang moh can surpass us? -
Lower standards until everyone can score A*.
Good right? :?
Beware, scarly, they come out with Higher Maths, Higher Science.
:celebrate: Kiasu Singapore mah. -
Lowering weightage is NOT Equal to lowering standard.
I guess the intention is not to stop the \"foreign talent\" getting into top schools. There is no way we can stop them if they are really good. Like the one shown on the newspaper posted a few pages back. She will probably be accepted by RGS via DSA since she is already in GEP at RGPS even she is not the top in SG or school. -
I think our chinese std has been very low. My friend, angmopai, never read chinese books/magazines, cannot speak fluently, also get A2 for his CL2 at AO level.
Strange right? -
KSP:
This girl can read 金庸 and enjoy it at P4, she is excellent in every subject.
This girl is incredible!!! She is in the GEP class in RGPS. That means she is also very good in her English and Maths. Looks like she has the potential to be the top student (from foreign talent group again???) in next year PSLE.cascada:
tamarind, this china chinese talks with selfish motive, no 算数的.
Maybe (really maybe) her P5 EL standard is P3 only leh...
She is the favourite student of her CL teacher. (I know her CL teacher in RGPS) -
Donkey Kong:
Ha..ha...my son also 'angmopai', never read Chinese books or magzines, scored distinctions for both his CL and HCL in psle. Also did not spend a lot of time on this subject. My 'eyes' almost popped out upon seeing his grades in HCL.I think our chinese std has been very low. My friend, angmopai, never read chinese books/magazines, cannot speak fluently, also get A2 for his CL2 at AO level.
Strange right?
Yeah...our standard is real low.
-
KSP:
Agree that lowering weightage does not equate to lowering standard. I should have elaborate my previous posted a little. As many parents has pointed out their concern of students will also be more slack or putting effect in learning Chinese which may ultimately affect the standard of Chinese in Singapore. It is all about measurement drives behavious. Human work, act, react, response,... according to the way we are being measured.Lowering weightage is NOT Equal to lowering standard.

I remembering watching TV forum program (I think it is a Singapore program, can't remember the exact program name) some years ago. There was this ang moh expat working in Singapore, has a Singaporean Chinese secretary. His secretary was unable to read fax from China written in Chinese. Complaint to her boss that she cannot understand phone call from China as they have a different accent.
So the boss become her secretary instead. Answer all the phone calls from China and has to explain to her the content of the Chinese fax so that she can get her work done accordingly.
