My DD had consistently performed well and top her class. When we were choosing her sec sch, the first 3 were IPs, next 3 SAPs. I was confident that she could score at least 250+. When the results were released, I was devastated. She scored only 235. I was in a state of shock and disappointment. My ego was humbled by the result. These few days I’ve come to terms with this reality. I’ve accepted her limitations. She is what she is. This is a valuable lesson that I learned. I hope I can share.

I think it’s really how motivated the child is. Individual learning attitude become very important as you reach Sec as in Primary sch I think some kids can do very well with parent support and push.

She mentioned those who go by O levels have to switch school and get used to new friends and Teachers and within 2 years sit for A levels as compared to those IP stream who are in same school and already set their goal for A level at the start, less disruptive.[/quote]I think it goes both ways.
My dd went ipjc after o levels (cop 3 that year). She and the other o level friends didn't have problem catching up. Not that it was plain sailing 2 years. It was probably the toughest 2 years of her life. In fact, the o level students were more consistent than the ip students in her class in terms of results. At the end, quite a few of the o level students made it to the honours list for the A levels. I had a quick scan of the few pages of names and found quite a few of her friends' names.

For different schools, the PSLE prelim scores can be plus/minus 20 points compared to actual scores!

That's true. I can attest to that. Most of the kids in my dc school had much better psle score than prelim score.
A sap school I know had many students with high prelims score. But lower psle scores. One reason could be due to their easy prelims papers which I had access to.

I have parents commenting that their children didn't do well or as well as expected when they were scored pretty good marks (around 230 to 240 range).

There are so many factors involved - actual day performances (stress, anxiety, 'brain fart' etc.), difficulty and trickiness of papers etc. Besides, human x= machine -- can't expect 100% consistency (and even machines may have down time). After putting in so much time and effort for preparation, the kids themselves will most probably be the first to feel the pain and disappointment. What good will it do if we 'drown in sorrow' with them or worse still, 'rub salt into their wound'?

It is important to remember that there's a much long road ahead in their education and learning. Shower your kids with love and support and give them the courage to soldier on in this challenging journey! :snuggles:

I also want to add that 235 is a great score, one that will get her into a great school. Besides, PSLE is just one exam which really does not define anyone in any way. All the best for Sec 1 and beyond. The best is yet to be
