Don't have to worry to much about the kids handling 4 to 8/9 subjects. For lower secondary, there are only additional 2 or 3 subjects ie Geo, History and XX (depending on schools). 3 days will be taken up by CCA and 3rd lang (2+1). There will be projects, meetings, group work, research, consultations .... on non-CCA days. Generally, the kids will be dismissed btwn 6-7pm. SBQ is Source Based Questions. By the end of Sec 1, the kids will generally familiarise with it.
the first 2-3 months can be overwhelming because of the adjustment.phtthp:
hi Janet,
can share some key points, how to guide Secondary school children, from handling 4 to 9 subjects this huge, big jump ? Thank you.
it's advisable to find a CCA which doesn't demand too many days staying back after school as it will zap up the energy to revise and get homework done. then there is this WhatsApp group among students which will distract the kids from studying.
most importantly, listen in class and do not hesitate to ask the teacher if there is anything not understood. secondary school teachers treat sec 1 students as young adults. if need to, ask the teacher for a few minutes after school to clarify.
SBQ (short based questions) is something new to learn for history and geography.
hope this helps. -
How u feel when u received the sms ? Feel excited or more or less expected the school posting ?

My girl was posted to her choice of school (1st choice). She selected the school based on her PSLE result and hence, expected to get into her 1st choice of school. -

When you make it a big deal, then it will become a big deal to the kids. When you donβt make it a big deal, the kids will think it is a norm. They will survive.

From 4 subjects in primary school to 8-9 subjects in secondary school?! So, what's new?
If our generation could, they jolly well can too. :nunchuk: -

3rd language is usually for IP students. not all CCAs take up 3 times a week.

however, do be prepared for projects which would require kids to meet up after school. dismissal for non IP is around 2-3pm. -

My girl scored 256 and she got in Cedar IP which was her 1st choice.

My girl just did fine her S1 with 3rd lang Japanese, even though she got C for HCL.
But, her A+ Japanese was used for GPA.
