NUS High School of Mathematics and Science (Diploma)

Notebook and iPad is not required but have to be able to do e-learning and project work online.
Just to add on to that post concerning honours, most of the time students are not suggested to take more than 2 honours due to workload issues. Moreover, most of these honours students are quite good at their subjects and take the olympaids. The timetable is unable to fit all the time for olympaids so students are required to stay back after school for olympaid. E.g. Chemistry olympaid from 4.30pm to 6pm on Thursdays and 7pm-8pm on Thursdays. So you should balance your time. Chemistry honours is a subject that you will have to spend a lot of time on to memorise organic equations and physics honours is basically calculus mathematics. -
Wonder if there are still parents who didn’t provide a Hp to their child who are in NUSH?

My level has 2 of them but they got their phones at year 3.

In regards to Personal Statement, I saw from the first thread that, some software can detect if it is copied
Anyone can help to explain to me how to get the personal statement done properly.
My son is going to apply to US Univerity and but he has no clue how to get it done and he is struggling despite getting help from the school (foreign talent, sorry for being too personal)
I heard personal statement is important and heard this is one of the key issues the school is facing and resulted in their top student not able to get into the top university of his choice.
Shall we get professional writer for help?
We are in dilemma.
Appreciate any advise from any parents or any professional?
Thanks -
I assumed your DC is applying to STEM-based US College,
Yes, Software scanning against plagiarism is applied everywhere. It is something that is apparent in any almost any piece of works, essay, thesis or reports submitted at the Uni-level world-wide and even in local poly. You may study others but the idea is to be as original as possible, make your own possible reflection and not copy a chunk of words. Don’t waste money paying professionals to do the work for you because there is no guarantee. Beside no sense of satisfaction or achievement.
Besides, the personal statement, all the US uni also have their own list of questionnaires to assess the student quality, desirable traits to assess /judge their suitability. Most Uni also emphasized a more holistic personality all-round personal development, leadership and view on issues. All these are reflected in the personal statement and the answers to the list of questionnaires.
Depending on the tier of US UNI (and to be able to apply successfully to a US Uni), I would recommend you know the acceptance rate of Uni eg CalTech, Stanford, MIT, UCL Berkeley, John Hopkins, Princeton or a lesser-known Uni like Pennsylvania UNI, etc.
Be realistic on which tier of US Uni your DC is applying. It is very very very very competitive. Your kids are competing against his/her top NUSH friends and others in SG (Ri/HCI etc) for a few places.
Besides a good NUSH academic, perfect AP scorecards (all ‘5’), any ISEF medals, any local and international Olympiad medalists, any local and international achievements in STEM, AStar-awards and research award, being an RSI scholar, etc are a must for any top-notch US UNi.
Anything less than that, your DC will less be disappointed ( and have better chances of acceptance) if he/she considers more choices outside the top-tier Uni.
Also, it is very important to consider the specific field of study, It may be easier to get into UCL Berkely than to Stanford/CalTech/MIT in engineering/computing or to John Hopkins (biomedical engineering), etc
But then, there are surprises too sometimes. My DC got acceptance to CalTech, John Hopkins, Berkeley (out of the list that includes Stanford, MIT, and Havard).
If your kid already has the Scholarship/Financial support of Institution eg ASTAR, DSTA or Gov agency it will almost boost his or her chance of getting into this top-notch school.
Getting a good support from NUSH School College counseller is important too !. But I learn that Miss Huang (with many years of experience in supporting college application) has left the school.
At the end of the day, in your 6 choices (of Uni option ) be realistic and carefully weigh the option if your DC has the chance (or any) to enter any of these schools or choose a slightly less competitive UNi.
Good luck to you and DC, -
and to add to your pre-requisite list, your DC SATS score must satisfy the desired requirements of the Uni considered.
