All About Preparing For Primary One

cantbearit2:
Sat - DD1 goes to Trio with mummy (DD2 stay at hm wif daddy)
If daddy doesn't mind staying home, then this arrangement is fine. What I'm afraid is that he actually wants to go out as a family, but bec got Trio, die die must stay at home.
We are a very hands-on family, everything do together. Though tired, but at least it's what hubby and I wanted. So you might wanna find out what your husband wants, it's difficult to balance time between kids and spouse but make sure you don't neglect your husband while ensuring the well-being of your children.cantbearit2:
That means it's a waiting session from 930am all the way to 1230pm. 3 hours!!!Sun - DD1 and DD2 attend phonics class at the same pl. (timing is one aft another from 9.30am to 11am and 11am to 12.30pm)
You sure you and your husband can tahan all the way like that? Every Sunday, no fun time together. Bec after 1230pm, lunch. Then if girls tired, will usually head home to sleep?cantbearit2:
Actually if it's a weekday session, don't think it's tiring for all. Actually kids stay at home during weekdays really boring. Might as well go swimming, but just that must ensure there's someone to pick her up lor. Important is that she must know what she will be into. If she loves water, then should be easy. Anyway, swimming usually is a short session, after 3-5 months, the child should be able to handle some basic strokes. Can pull her out anytime, so cash and time commitment won't be as much as your 2 DD's current courses.Juz thot of signing her up for 1 of the weekdays for swimming class. We will stop the swimming class once she is able to swim.

Hi Winth,
Actually the Sun phonics class whole family goes together. 9.30am - 11am mummy goes wif DD2 to phonics while daddy bring DD1 to playground.
At 11am DD1 attends phonics herself while mummy, daddy and DD2 go shopping.
It's true that we usu. head hm to sleep aft that cos both gals need their aftn nap.
Weekdays DD1 is in full time childcare so impossible to bring her except for weekday nite. That's why thot of signing her up.
Thks for your advice! -
reading all the posts, i feel more stress!
My gal wil be gg to P1 next yr and currently her K2 seems to be too relax… no spelling, no tingxie and only few worksheets for one week which will be given back on every fridays. NOt that i want to push her, but too relax kind of environment is giving her ‘massage’ that P1 will be that relax as well??
The sch is teaching 3 letter phonics kind of stuff, and simple numbers bonds…Wondering how she is gg to cope when she starts p1 if she didnt attend enrichment all these while… -

poohcutie,

you can refer to the first few pages of this thread on the expectations of P1 nowadays...the few important ones is telling time, and handling money (for math).
how is your kid's command of english? as english is the medium used for both english and math subject, so by tackling english language first, you can 'kill 2 birds in one stone', leaving only the MT for you to look into when she goes to P1.
there is still more than 6 mths til next year, still plenty of time for preparation.
additionally, now is also the good time to 'train' your kid to take initiative (in speaking up/asking questions etc), boost her self-confidence (give her opportunity to buy food while you stand aside to observe etc), if she is a bit shy/quiet. -

Hii mummies ,I am so concerned. My son in MMI,k2 now, hasnt evenm learnt how to tell the time, hasnt learnt double digit subtraction, multiplication and division or even counting money. I am soooo worried. When I called the school, they said they dont push or rush things , they let the kids take it slow. Furthermore, my son's class always got teacher change.
I have managed to teach my son to tell the time, and double digit additions, but I am at a lost how to teach him the double digit subtraction. Can anyone help??
Also ,has your child already learnt the above stuff that I noted down... please share. .. -
I guess it's probably one of those non-authentic montessori learning centre. My boy attended a MMI Math enrichment during K2 and they covered all of the above. however, maybe your boy's school think it is still early, cos my boy started in Mar and completed the 1 yr course in 7mths (Oct) with only once a week lesson.
There are some eg to do double digit subtraction,
1) subtraction without borrowing
this is straight forward. stack the numbers above each other and subtract.
2) subtraction with borrowing
this is abit tricky. your kid has to know that 1 ten=10 ones, 2 ten = 20ones and so on.
52
-18
---------
equal 5 tens 2 ones
minus 1 ten 8 ones
---------
equal 4 tens 12 ones
minus 1 ten 8 ones
---------
ans 3 ten 4 ones
= 34
this is the clearer concept of our usual old-school borrowing method.
learnt this from MMI itself.
(not to ChiefKS; think can merge this with P1 prepare or P1 math depending on who you view it

I guess you mean she didn't attend ENG and MATH enrichment.
Actually if she is already reading well, there isn't a need to go for ENG enrichment unless you want to go into Creative writing at this stage.
Math for P1 is actually managable if the command of English is there.
So...relax...
But then again, i am talking from a neighbourhood school point of view. For your kid's SAP school, you may want to check out with parents whose kids are from the school to gauge the school's expectations of P1 kids. -
P1 workload seems quite heavy compares to K2. Besides weekly tingxie & spelling, my girl has weekly class tests too for almost every subject.
Good news is teachers do teach in class. My girl brings home tonnes of worksheets she did in class. So it’s not necessary to do too much advance teaching to prepare for P1.
They do learn something when they attend P1. I didn’t prepare her for those weekly class tests. Just treat as a revision of what’s being taught in class. -
My kids are in MMI too, K2 and N2.
K2 they had covered +, -, x and diveded, telling time(half past, quater to, quater pass) and even touch abit on fraction in the 1st semester.
