Hi Swc,
Anyone's DD in HSSRP? Would like to know if receive invite for this programme, do the girls still have to go through another round of selection test? How heavy is the time commitment?
My dd is in HSSRP this year. If your dd receive invitation for this programme, she can choose to accept or reject it. However, once you accept the invitation, get prepared for the full commitment to this programme. The girls will have to submit her research proposal to MOE, and the final selection is from the expert-mentor. And yes, it is super heavy time commitment to be in this programme. Most of the time, the deadline is short, and crashes with school's graded tests and assignments due date. The time is mostly spend on reading, researching the things and keep on amending and amending that your expert-mentor wanted you to work on. Expert-mentor can keep changing the directions of research, and get prepare to work with minimum guidance but high expectations. Although the girls will also attached with school's teacher-mentor, but the expert-mentor have the final say. It is not straight forward research paper, and need a lot of perseverance to be in this programme. My dd just submitted her final paper 2 weeks ago, and the last event is the symposium which is on 31 Oct. -

What you described sounds scary š
Just to clarify one more point: once the student accepts the invitation, is there a possibility her proposal will not be accepted by any mentor-expert? Does that mean she will have to find another SIA project when that happens? -
Ganjiongspider, just want to ask, does your daughter enjoy the program even though its very intensive? Does she have any regrets?

Just to clarify one more point: once the student accepts the invitation, is there a possibility her proposal will not be accepted by any mentor-expert? Does that mean she will have to find another SIA project when that happens?[/quote]Haha..In fact, it is indeed scary. For the first draft proposal, usually it is very simple and less demanding, like 2 page include introduction, short literature review, research questions, and methodology for the research. Generally, once your dd is in this programme & attach with expert-mentor, by hook or by crook, she has to complete the programme, cannot change any SIA. Coz HSSRP is a privilege programme to be attached with a expert-mentor, the girl must persevere to work through it. The most important of all, the girl has to sign acknowledgement or commitment letter from MOE. They take very seriously in this programme. Hence, get prepared to prioritize HSSRP than the any other things that you think is equally important. Generally, the original proposal will be half-accepted by the expert-mentor, but to take note that the expert-mentor has their own ideas or plan that he/she wants the student to research on. Get prepare to follow suit what the expert-mentor expect or demand from the research paper. -

Hi cutepandabear, to tell the truth, it is not a programme to be enjoy from, as it is too demanding and exhausting. But after the project review and submit the final paper, she did not have any regrets. Because she finally survived!!! :rahrah: Keep reminding her, HSSRP is a privilege MOE-gifted programme lo. It's a once in a life time for her to be in this gifted programme. And yeah, no regret in the end.
Ganjiongspider, just want to ask, does your daughter enjoy the program even though its very intensive? Does she have any regrets?

This HSSRP (NYGH) scholarship
is a 4 year programme , starts in Year 3, continue into Year 4, and eventually into Pre U-1 and Pre U-2.

As your daughter is doing this HSSRP together concurrently with her Year 3 Triple Pure Sciences subject combination,
may we know
1)
whether her HSSRP project or thesis submitted just 2 weeks ago to her \"Expert-mentor\" for assessment and evaluation,
does it fall under
- English Literature or
Chinese Literature or
History or
Geography or
Philosophy or
International Relationship / Political Science
category ?
2)
How was this project started ?
Was it initiated by your daughter from scratch, from nothing
or
is it already one of the existing \"pre-defined\" projects, inside the list of her \"Expert-mentor\", just awaiting for assistants to come and help this mentor, and your girl happen to choose one of the existing projects inside her mentor's list ?
3) can share
how does your daughter find the time, to balance this heavy, exhaustive challenging HSSRP commitment, together concurrently with her equally demanding, Year 3 Triple Pure Sciences (Bio, Chem, Physics) ?
Thank you -

Hi phtthp, as you are not from NYGH, you probably are not aware of our Sec 3 students' SIA project they have to undertake as part of their curriculum (** it is not scholarship). They can choose any SIA projects under schools' listed programme, or MOE HSSRP, Moot Parliament, Science or Math Mentorship programme, lasted for 8-10 mths. MOE Programme is for selected students, but can choose to accept or reject, and choose schools' listed SIA projects, which are not so demanding. Other students who are under BSP Scholarship (4 years) will be considered as part of their Sec 3 SIA projects. As I have previously mentioned to Swc, even though the first draft proposal is proposed by the student, be prepared to change the area of research from expert-mentor (but same subject strands) , as they are the experts in their area of discipline and have their own ideas as to how to carry out the mentorship. To answer to your questions:

(1) The subject strands can be any area that you are keen to research on. The school will give a list of mentors and their expertise in the area of their research, and HSSRP students will choose which mentors and research area to work on - can be psychology, philosophy, social media, history, literature, language etc
(2) For a start, the students have to submit a brief proposal that she is interested to research on. We wouldn't know what is in store in the beginning stage. But ultimately, when she is attached to a expert-mentor, whether like it or not, be prepared to change the research topics, that the expert-mentor wishes to research on. And yeah, it is more like continue their research, they wouldn't want to waste time on working on students' \"own research\".
(3) ha! No rest time, half-dead. I would say good for her to take HSSRP this year, coz CCAs stepped down becoz of COVID-19, so it's more like the CCAS stepped down time replaced by doing HSSRP. If not, I wouldn't say my dd can handled with her 9 subjs + intensive CCAs. I would say for HSSRP, unless you are doing 8 subjs and not intensive CCAs, it will probably make it through. -

to work on her HSSRP project and assignments, diligently. Well done ! -
