Thanks Zappy! Gosh I realise I don’t even know who the form teacher is... on LA I ask my girl if teacher teaches any techniques on lit response etc, she says mostly discussion in class. Seems like to sink or float, a lot got to depend on ourselves or rather themselves. Sometimes I have the impression that some of the teachers are more like facilitators.
Not surprised. I think the girls are encouraged to explore and define rather than being spoon-fed.

Hi Zappy, in a normal school year, does the school arrange parents to have 1-1 face to face meeting with the class Teachers? Think this year there was only one session beginning of the year to address the whole cohort parents. The PTM originally planned for this month is also a group one.

We didn't have any 1-1 with the teacher last year either. I am not sure if this is a common practice here.

However, for this year's student-parent conference, there was an option if you would like the teacher to join in. Additionally, there is a post-event survey or feedback form, which we used to request for a call with the form teacher just so that we can consult someone about the Sec3 subject combination choices and she did give us a call back a couple of weeks later.

Sorry, was mistaken - there WAS a session last yr. I didnt attend so forgot that it was available - apologies.

Hi does NYGH still provide one way bus ride to MOELC for third language? For both Newton and Bishan?

Considering third language options now. Thank you!

Yes the school provides one way bus to both centres if your DD takes classes in the 2 stipulated 3rd language days. However, if she switches to join another class on another day, then she will have to find her own way there. FYI, nowadays, different schools have specific 3rd language days. NYGH 3rd language days should be on Monday and Wednesday, if things remain the same next year.

Does nygh require parents to pay alot of out of pocket expenses for their programmes, etc which might deter children from low income families from applying for the school?

What type of out-of-pocket expenses are you referring to?

There are certainly some payments needed, such as co-payment for CCA activities and also miscellaneous fees which are used for excursions (in better non-Covid times). Overseas trips, if any, also need to be paid for but I believe this is common across most schools.

However, there are also financial assistance schemes to help needy students, both from MOE as well as NYGH itself. Those who qualify would get free textbooks/ uniforms, etc. In addition, at the end of each school year, the students organize a textbook gathering exercise where they donate their used books and anyone can go get them for the following year. Seniors sometimes also directly pass their books to their juniors. This can help to save quite a sum as the texts can be quite expensive.

I mean for the enrichment programmes, cca co payment and workshops organised, roughly how much do parents need to pay through Giro yearly?

                  Thank you for your replies.

And maybe class fund, cca fund, just throwing out some possibilities. Do they need to pay for school notes?

CCA co-payments varies from CCA to CCA. My DD's CCA is the most expensive and we pay $350 per semester. School workshops - no extra cost. Biggest expenditure so far is the buying of ipad in yr 2 (compulsory). But I understand that students with financial difficulties can approach school for financial assistance.

Originally in sec 2 they have the Boarding School Program. There is cost involved but becoz of covid-19, it was cancelled and so J cannot remember what the cost is.

Thanks for the information. May I know what is your DD’s cca? It’s quite a huge amount… Is it Inforcomm club?
