2020 PSLE Discussions and Strategies(for those born in 2008)

Hi, my child has 242+2 and we are thinking of the following:

1) Nan Chiau High 244
2) Chung Cheng High Main 244
3) Anglican High 241
4) PLMGS 237
5) CHIJ St Joseph Convent 237
6) Presbyterian High 236

Can anyone advise if it’s reasonable and do I need a lower safety net? First timer so not too sure. Thanks.

HCI does offer two Humanity subjects which are different from O level subjects. For IP curriculum, one is Social Study, one is Humanities Elective of Geography/History/Literature English/Literature Chinese. Students have the choice of taking 2 sciences plus 2 humanities or selecting 3 sciences plus 2 humanities.

There are a few Special Programs which the humanities subjects are slightly different.

pengpeng is right. Social Studies is a full subject at HCI (i.e. it covers more than the half subject at O levels).
If you are not in any special programmes in HCI, you will read two full Humanities. For the Science and Tech aspects, it's Phy+Chem, or Phy+Chem+Bio, or Phy+Chem+Computing. You can't take both Bio and Computing at the same time.

So in HCI, English lit + history is not allowed ?

It is not really possible to analyse COPs movements afterall the demand and supply differs for each cohort

What we do know is 39,995 took PSLE
Top 10% is ~ 4000 (>= 252).
Top 3% is ~ 1200 (>= 261)
The 4000 includes kids who DSA successfully to their dream schools including NUSH, SST etc.
If you are targeting IP/IB schools, assuming each has intake about 300-400, you can do a rough estimate.

PSLE 2020 papers were relatively easier, the average is higher but the high scores are lower.
Easier papers mean many of the candidates will score around the same high marks, that is, the variance from the mean (average) is smaller.
So just make sure your choices has a safety net with COP 7-10 below your T-score.

Better if u put as 6th choice a school with COP around 232 such as Geylang Methodist.

Just curious on where do you stay. Anglican High seems much further away from your other options.

I think it's best to have the first three choices
quite close to what your boy have, and the last three be at least 5 points below your boy's score. So in this context, the 243 and 244 sch should be in the top 3 and the 239 should be in the last 3 options. Not the best advice but it is what I believe is sufficient.

If the school with COP 239 is truly what the boy wants, leave it as first choice. The rest (probably redundant) can follow. We should be choosing schools most suitable for the child, and not schools that best fit the COP / t-score.
