I was looking at the compo component, there’s a 说明文 and 议论文, may i know what is the difference ? which compo is easier to write ? thanks!

Hi Ms Feon,

The main difference between 说明文 and 议论文 is for the latter, you get to agree/disagree with the point stated in the question and/or get to express your personal thoughts and opinions, i.e. 论点 (to be backed up using 论证手法、论据 and 论证）.

For the former, you simply have to analyze and explain the stated view/stand with 说明手法 - you \"can't\" disagree with it and would need to be relevant knowledge about the topic so that your 说明手法 are legit and convincing.

Thus 议论文 will usually be the easier of the 2 (factors such as topic covered in the question and whether students has prior knowledge and/or experience writing about the topic would obviously play a part though).

Assessment wise, the options are very limited - there's only like 2 for HCL in the market.

Sources I use/recommend includes:
- SPH's 看录像说话 series (3 books till date - no overlapping, 4th book to be released next month)

can Sec 3 Express stream students, from the "Non HCL" cum "Non-IP" track -


request / permitted / allowed by schools,

to sit for their

O-level Standard Chinese "bu-hua" in Sec 3, instead of sitting so late in end of Sec 4,

and then

In the event that they did not do well,
Eg.

scored B4 or C5 or C6, mediocre results


re-take second round of O-level Standard Chinese "bu-hua" one more time again, so as to improve their O-level CL grade ?

That means, give them the chance to bite at the same cherry, twice !


After all,
in Sec 4,

Express stream "Non-HCL" students are not taking any O-level "gao-hua" paper at all.
