CHIJ St Nicholas Girls' Secondary

Hi,
I would like to check of any parent could advise if St Nick's Sec 1 OP lower sec Science in 2021 is still taught under the following sequence: 1) Chem, 2) Bio and 3) Physics?
The above is what I gathered from my elder girl 4 years ago. Has there been any change in 2021? Trying to gauge for 2022.
Many thanks if anyone could advise. :thankyou: -

I noticed sec 1 op 2021 was using new science books. So maybe you should wait till someone from sec 1 op 2021 answers you. Meanwhile, take note that Sec 1 2019 followed the new syllabus that go by themes, and I would imagine it is the same in 2021 even though they used textbooks. And therefore, could be the same for 2022.

MerlionInGermany,
Thank you for sharing. Its helpful. At least I know I may hv to thrash the elder sis science textbooks.
Hopefully someone can also help to confirm if the classes goes by the MOE planned syllabus: Diversity, Models, Interactions and Systems. -
For Sec 1 2021 OP Science, they are covered in this sequence. They don’t use textbooks (my gal’s book is still new), notes will be provided.
1) Scientific Endeavour
2) Models
3) Diversity
4) Interactions -

For the O-level track
=================
students remained inside the same class for two years, during Sec (1 and 2). No change in class, but Form Teachers and some subject Teachers can change after the end of Sec 1, entering Sec 2.
Sometimes, after (one Term or two Term) of teaching the girls in a certain subject, if a number of girls in the same class find that the subject Teacher (can be a Relief Teacher or a perm Teacher, in our school) is no good or can't teach well,
our girls (students) will inform their parents. Parents will feedback to VP. Then, when next new Term commence, this teacher may be gone, replaced by another new Teacher coming in.
The five O-level classes are (Charity, Diligence, Faith, Grace and Justice).
For Sec 1 students taking MEP (Music program), they will be assigned to \"Charity\" class.
At end of Sec 2 streaming exercise, choosing their new Sec 3 subject combination -
due to the flexibility of offering students as many various possible O-level subject combination as possible, St Nick open ONE more extra O-level class, called Sec 3 \"Hope\". Thus, you come across \"Hope\" class only in Upper Sec, not in Lower Sec (1 nor 2).
Since Sec 3 now have Total six O-level classes, this means that each class size will become smaller, since different students are interested in pursing different type of subject combination.
In SNGS,
the Double Pure Sciences classes, are highly popular !
Chemistry is compulsory. Depending on each batch, in some years,
pure Biology is far more popular, in greater demand than Pure Physics.
Eg.
Those girls (students) who know that they are not going for future Engineering career, they will choose, opt for Pure Bio, in Double Pure Science classes.
Triple Pure Sciences (Bio + Chem + Physics), though still exists, is not so much in demand, as compared to the Total number of Double Pure Sciences classes opened. -
How many of the 6 O level classes are double pure Science classes? Just for curiosity’s sake. I guess triple science is no longer as popular as during my time since Bio is no longer compulsory to enter Medicine.
During my batch (1994 O level) 4Hope was triple science + History, 4Loyalty was triple science + Literature, and 4Grace was triple science + Geography. And a handful from 4G went for pull-out lessons during humanities lessons cos they did Triple science + Chinese Literature. There was a double science with Chinese Lit combi as well.
Total 10 or 11 O level classes back then (before IP came about). -

It is different every year. Depends on demand.

Yes, teaching in St Nick can be a bit stressful, whether you are a Relief Teacher or a perm Teacher.

For the O-level track
=================
If based on PSLE entry,
outside external Non-affliated students entering SNGS (O-level track) are often armed with past COP Tscore like
253 (for PSLE 2019 batch, born 2007)
or
254 (for PSLE 2020 batch, born 2008).
(if Tscore wrong, can highlight. Thank you)
And after admission, most of our O-level girls are very hardworking, continued to maintain good, consistent results.
Example
In this year 2021 Sec 2 cohort (born 2007), in one of the classes, out of Total 38 students inside this class, 30 students scored A1 (75 & above), in our school's Termly Science (Sec 2) exam. Naturally, the Science Teacher in charge of teaching this class is very pleased, happy with her abundant bumper crop harvest. On that day when she announced this piece of good news to the entire Sec 2 class, she was smiling all the time. Who knows, maybe she getting promotion soon ?
So, if a Relief Teacher (main Teacher went on maternity leave to give birth), say, come in is a bit lazy, lazy to mark assignments piled up & her lazy pattern is repeated over quite some time observed, ie. our students' punctual submitted school work assignment seldom get marked and returned on time for them to revise for their Term tests (exam), some students will feedback to their parents. Then, parents will discuss about this teacher's behavior, inside the Parents' class chat group set up. If majority of the students-cum-parents not happy, will highlight this to VP. When next new Term come, this Teacher may be gone. Come in, another fresh new face Teacher.
You need two hands to clap.
Just as St Nick O-level track students are prepared to work hard, so do they expect their subject Teachers to be of a certain, minimum teaching standard quality, too. Not those lazy bump, come to school just to pass time, shake leg, collect MOE salary $, that type !
Maybe this type of lazy attitude teachers happen, exist in other Secondary schools too. And is being tolerated in other schools because their students or parents just closed one eye, don't bother. But over here in St Nick, some students disliked their assignments submitted left un-marked for quite some time, will notice. After all, they have done their part diligently and submitted their school homework on time. Moreover, Sec 2 is an important streaming exercise year.
