How did you arrive at this? Are you referring to these as your choices? Or your child’s choices?
Ok conclusion is, if cannot get into HCI/ RIJC, choose NYJC. If cannot get into NYJC, never mind, there is still a backup EJC. If cannot get into EJC, still have NJC/ DHS/ VJC. If cannot get into all these JCs, just choose Polytechnic. 😀
I would definitely not conclude this way. -

Even my children said this is not correct. DD1 said only NYJC allows that, while her JC does not.
This perspective resonates with me. I feel there’s good value (for a student) in being able to choose subjects freely.[/quote]
EJC cop is 6 and 8 for Sc and Art steam. If I were 8 pointer, I get in first to the JC of my choice then switch to Sc stream. Won’t it be unfair to those 6 pointers who put Sc first and got balloted out?
It’s not flexibility, just abusing the system to benefit a handful while a much larger group out there suffers in silence. If rules are not followed to the dot, what is the incentive to be law-abiding? Does MOE condone such blatant gaming of the system? -

Not saying this is correct. It is “good value” for a child who doesn’t know what he wants yet.

Good morning lee_yl. It is not that bad actually.

- those got ballot out still can study Sc stream in other JCs. Not to overlook: those 6 pointers won’t even qualify for Art stream in some other JCs.
- or they too can also select Art stream in NYJC and still get admitted ahead of those 8 pointers, and then choose Sc subjects combi
- is Sc really better than Art? Our government leaders are mostly from non Sc major
- it could have been more predictable and easier to
manage if strictly Art stream = mainly art subjects. NYJC is doing more actually. It require standing by more resources to cater for such flexible subject combinations. -

Arts stream means (1) 3 arts subject + 1 science subject.

Science stream means either (2) 3 science subjects + 1 arts subject, or (3) 2 science subjects + 2 arts subject.
Allowing a person who gained admission into the arts stream with an easier/higher COP, to do (2) or (3) is not about “standing by more resources to cater to flexible subject combinations”.
If it the 2 distinct streams are mandated by MOE (like last time when there were 3 streams and now cut to 2 streams), it should be followed, and not about “predictable and easier to manage etc etc”.
If it is not to be followed, then all should just have one stream/COP.
Also, if one gained admission into the arts stream presumably to do (1), but allowed to do (2) or (3), then it should be considered an appeal. And MOE appeal rules state that you must first meet COP of the school+stream before your appeal is being assessed. -
NYJC’s "marketing" strategy seems to be good. They go to quite a few secondary schools to "sell" themselves as a fun school with late start time and everyday dress down, flexi subject combi, caring teachers and also play on the fear of JIP-JAE divide.
It’s impressive that NY’s COP has improved much over the years.
I’m just a bit puzzled with their "selling" points. With covid, there is no more mass assembly. Other JCs also start at 8+. Many other JCs also allowed to dress down with school tshirts and pants/skirts everyday. Other JCs also offer flexi subject combi. My understanding of 2 science+ 2 arts is a Science combi in most other JCs. This NY sci-arts mixed flexi combi is a open secret. Maybe this should be rectified so that there is a common definition across all JCs on what is considered Arts and what is considered Science.
JIP-JAE divide exists but it is generally not as bad as people imagine it to be. I do hear from my friends about their kids being ostracized by friends. At the end of the day, it boils down to the individual whether he makes the first move or he sits around waiting for people to make the first move. -
Actually I am not sure how rampant is this "practice" now. My DD1 is admitted into Sc stream this year. Her class has an Arts stream student but her subj conbi is 3 Humanities and 1 Sc H2 subj. The rest are all admitted into Sc stream, and most of then have 3 or 2 Sc H2 and 1 or 2 H2 Humanities subj.

Principal (Nanyang Junior College) & his staff team did an excellent job in \"Sales & Marketing \" promotion !
Nowadays, many JAE students put
first choice : RI / Hwa Chong
third choice : Nanyang Junior College
fourth choice : other A-level JCs -

This is more of class allocation. Sometimes it's not possible to create a class for a student with quite different subj combi. But the bottom line is, what COP did the student enter the school with? Under Science or under Arts. What is defined as Science? What is defined as Arts?

Hmm, I see your point. The only thing my DD1 mentioned is, when choosing subj combi in the portal, they are not required to indicate which stream they were admitted from (Not sure if this is the case for other JC). So it gives the impression that they can choose \"freely\". But may be the school has an underlying data on their admitted Stream offline, to serve as a match or check.
