Compare RGS vs NYGH

Hi not sure how valid it is now given my 3 girls are in HCI or uni now.
They were all from NYGH and graduated from SAP pri Sch as well. Their Chinese is not great (pri sch supplemented with tuition but A*/distinction at PSLE) and no tuition from sec onwards. Eventually distinction at O level HCL. If your concern is about their Chinese standard, I don’t think you need to worry. 70% or so obtain distinction at O HCL, the rest probably B3 which is good enough to be exempted from H1 Chinese in HCI.
Based on your description your gal seems to NYGH culturally however I do know of some parents who prefer to place their daughters into RGS to push them out of their comfort zone. No rights or wrongs both are great schools. Best is to bring your gal to both open houses and feel the atmosphere. My gals immediately said no to RGS after the OH as they find the environment too ‘rowdy’ while I preferred RGS.Thanks for replying! The posts at KSparents seem to move much slower now and I wasn’t sure I would get any replies.
I’m more worried my DD cannot keep up with the chinese standard at NYGH , will the school provide additional support for girls weaker in Chinese?
We’ve been to both open houses, and my DD doesn’t really have a preference. Personally , I prefer RGS due to the diversity and my feel is that the girls have more autonomy?
Do you mind if I message you in chat ?

Hi I have children in both RI college and HCI college, via JAE. I would assumed the cultures from these 2 colleagues would somewhat a continuations from their respective high schools (RGS/NYGH). I attended these 2 schools’ open houses and school events and I do find their have very distinct culture differences. Most importantly it’s a matter of good fit for the child. In summary, I find RI is more formal and high profile whereas HCI is less formal and lower profile.
-
I have children in concert band cca in both colleges. RI would book Victoria concert hall for their annual concert performance. The students are all dress up in suits for their performance and we have to pay for the concert ticket. HCI annual performance is held in the school auditorium and it’s free. Students would wear black shirt/ bottom. RI performances give that international vibes whereas HCI perform some of the Xinyao pieces which touched my heart.
-
RI engage external event organiser to organise an ideal sharing talk with domain experts. The whole event felt like a fashion show and with all the impressive staging and lighting. HCI events are usually held at its auditorium with no bells and whistles.
-
RI open house are well coordinated, with students guides stationed at gateway to welcome visitors with guided tours. HCI open house is spontenous- students doing their own stuffs , campus feels lively and spontaneous. Visitors got to move around on the own.
-
RI campus is quite closely spaced and feel like a ministry building . HCI campus is widely spaced and fell open.
-
academic wise, my HCI child commented RI’s practice papers are easy. And I have the impression HCI stretches their students more than RI’s.

If your gal doesn’t have a preference and willing to listen to you, then maybe you can assess based on what or how you think you want her to grow up to be.
In terms of Chinese or other acad support, I believe NYGH has pull-out classes to assist the weaker students. The fact that my girls do not need tuition, do not like Chinese or use Chinese, can still obtain distinction, speaks a lot about the teaching/preparation in the school.
They are two vastly different schools with different beliefs and cultures. The Raffles schools have produced a lot of leaders and influential figures. HCI probs less so maybe they are of lesser profiles also because of the culture to be humble and uphold more traditional values. I would have preferred my gals to go RGS for various reasons but ultimately they are the ones who have to go through the arduous 6 years journey. -

Hi, Hi, actually my DS is in RI (IP) so I guess I roughly know what Raffles is like . However I do think there’s some difference between girls and boys and was wondering about the culture in NYGH.
My DS didn’t really have a preference for either HCI or RI then, and he chose RI in the end due to the MEP programme and so far he seems to be coping quite well.
May I ask what is the difference between the personality of your children in HCI and RI? What prompted each of them to choose their respective college? Thank you! -
Good question. Their choices reflected their inclinations.
The child that chose RI, because he found RI was well organised during the JAE open house. He is the type that prefer well defined rules and orders. The child that chose HCI is more “lackback”- prefers to “follows his heart”.
-
@bbbay Thank you for this very interesting perspective.
I have no basis for comparison as I only have personal experience with HCI and would fully agree with your observation that HCI’s activities generally are without the bells and whistles.
My kid enjoyed the 6 years fully but admittedly, he did find it intense.

I’m leaning towards RGS but I would like my DD to make her own decision. Hence, trying to get more information . Since she is undecided, I believe my input would influence her decision.I’ve been trying to see which school culture would fit by DD better , but I thought what you mentioned “how you think you want her to grow up to be “ makes a lot of sense too.
Tbh, when we went to the RGS Open house, I was not very impressed by the student guide. Maybe it was too crowded, but we could hardly hear the student guide, and we lost track of her a few times during the tour . The CCA booths and performances were good though.

My 2 cents:
Our PM said during the National Day rally, that he thinks he turn out ok even when he was not from “branded school”. A child should turn out equally fine too , fundamental, from either RI or HCI, I think.
Maybe, what we hope our child to be in future should
take a backseat. Instead what they aspire to be
is more important? -
Both of my children chose HCI and NYGH. In terms of Philosophical Inquiry, the sec 2 students are currently taking it, but it is a non-weighted subject. Also, take note that Language Arts at NYGH is a combined subject that integrates both Literature and English.

Hi , @phtthp
Do you know what is the NYGHS year 04 promo passing criteria and the minimum MSG pre-requiste to go Hwa Chong ?@phtthp said in Compare RGS vs NYGH:

Just now, I mentioned that both schools are just as equally competitive !
1. Is RGS more competitive than NYHS?
2. Are RGS students better than NYHS? Or better than all the rest of other IP girls schools?
Actually, the correct question to ask is not so much about which school is more competitive, since we already aware that both are just as competitive.
Instead, one ought to ask, between these 2 schools, which one is easier to clear IP, by the end of Sec 4 (or most of them call it Year 4), to move up to JC1 ?
In my opinion, RGS is easier to clear, by end of Year 4.
Why ?
Reasons
=======
1) NYGH is far more demanding, than RGS. In what sense ?
In order to clear HCL,
all NYGH Year 4 students must meet a certain minimum ( is it B3 or B4 ? ) grade, in their O-level (HCL). Otherwise, failure to do so will imply that once go up into JC, continue to take JC1 (Chinese).
In contrast,
RGS don't impose this type of troublesome O-level (Year 4 HCL results) requirement.
2) to move up into JC1, it is relatively easier (simpler) to pass RGS Year 4 \"Promotion\" passing criteria or pre-requisites, in order to go to RI in year 5. RGS passing mark, is very lenient!
In contrast,
NYGH end of Year 4 \"Promotional\" passing criteria is far more stringent, more demanding, more \"siong\". Must meet a certain minimum MSG pre-requisite, then can go up to Year 5 (Hwa Chong).
So, if one doesn't want anymore unnecessary further added stress (burden) , choose ... RGS,
make your life easier.
