Good question. Their choices reflected their inclinations.

The child that chose RI, because he found RI was well organised during the JAE open house. He is the type that prefer well defined rules and orders. The child that chose HCI is more “lackback”- prefers to “follows his heart”.

@bbbay Thank you for this very interesting perspective.

I have no basis for comparison as I only have personal experience with HCI and would fully agree with your observation that HCI’s activities generally are without the bells and whistles.

My kid enjoyed the 6 years fully but admittedly, he did find it intense.

I’m leaning towards RGS but I would like my DD to make her own decision. Hence, trying to get more information . Since she is undecided, I believe my input would influence her decision.

I’ve been trying to see which school culture would fit by DD better , but I thought what you mentioned “how you think you want her to grow up to be “ makes a lot of sense too.

Tbh, when we went to the RGS Open house, I was not very impressed by the student guide. Maybe it was too crowded, but we could hardly hear the student guide, and we lost track of her a few times during the tour . The CCA booths and performances were good though.

            My 2 cents:

Our PM said during the National Day rally, that he thinks he turn out ok even when he was not from “branded school”. A child should turn out equally fine too , fundamental, from either RI or HCI, I think.

Maybe, what we hope our child to be in future should
take a backseat. Instead what they aspire to be
            is more important?

Both of my children chose HCI and NYGH. In terms of Philosophical Inquiry, the sec 2 students are currently taking it, but it is a non-weighted subject. Also, take note that Language Arts at NYGH is a combined subject that integrates both Literature and English.

                Hi , @phtthp
Do you know what is the NYGHS year 04 promo passing criteria and the minimum MSG pre-requiste to go Hwa Chong ?

                1. Is RGS more competitive than NYHS?

                2. Are RGS students better than NYHS? Or better than all the rest of other IP girls schools?
Just now, I mentioned that both schools are just as equally competitive !

Actually, the correct question to ask is not so much about which school is more competitive, since we already aware that both are just as competitive.

Instead, one ought to ask, between these 2 schools, which one is easier to clear IP, by the end of Sec 4 (or most of them call it Year 4), to move up to JC1 ?

In my opinion, RGS is easier to clear, by end of Year 4.
                Why ?

                Reasons
                =======

                1) NYGH is far more demanding, than RGS. In what sense ?

                In order to clear HCL,
all NYGH Year 4 students must meet a certain minimum ( is it B3 or B4 ? ) grade, in their O-level (HCL). Otherwise, failure to do so will imply that once go up into JC, continue to take JC1 (Chinese).

                In contrast,
RGS don't impose this type of troublesome O-level (Year 4 HCL results) requirement.

                2) to move up into JC1, it is relatively easier (simpler) to pass RGS Year 4 \"Promotion\" passing criteria or pre-requisites, in order to go to RI in year 5. RGS passing mark, is very lenient!

                In contrast,
NYGH end of Year 4 \"Promotional\" passing criteria is far more stringent, more demanding, more \"siong\". Must meet a certain minimum MSG pre-requisite, then can go up to Year 5 (Hwa Chong).

So, if one doesn't want anymore unnecessary further added stress (burden) , choose ... RGS,
                make your life easier.

@bmann225 promotion criteria to JC as follows:
Pass both languages (≥ 50%) & MSG of 3.0 or lower computed for L2R5.
[L2: Language Arts and Higher Chinese Language, R5: 1 Humanities (or Higher
                  Art/ Advanced Music/ Malay Special Programme/ Bahasa Indonesia), 1
Mathematics or 1 Science and 3 other best subjects]

Character development is impt as they progress into adulthood so Sch plays a large part. NYGH talks a lot about 勤慎端朴 and hci on 自强不息. Compare that to Raffles. The emphasis on character development is different. What kind of leader do you want your child to be the next time or what is more suitable for her to be next time.

Both RGS and NYGH are top-notch schools. It really depends on your daughter’s strengths, interests, and where she feels most comfortable. Each offers unique opportunities, so consider her preferences.
