AL6 IP - Top Choice RGS or MGS ?
-
Dear all,
My Daughter has got AL5.
She is PR and Dragon kid where the number of kids are more and competition also is more.
Wanted to check what is the probability of getting a admission in RGS ? -
Is your daughter applying under Singaporean or PR or foreigner status? In the event, there is balloting, Singaporeans will be considered for AL6 pointers first before the rest.
I would think so too, if your dd is not extrovert and competitive type but a low-key person, I would think MGS is quite a nice choice. Since she has put in great effort to score an AL6, I think the dad should let her have her own say since both RGS and MGS are great schools
TBH, assuming this year’s COP for both schools remains at AL6, the chances of balloting in are very slim and she will probably end up with her 2nd choice school if either RGS or MGS is put as her first choice.

It would be truly seismic if the day comes that students (citizens or not) need to ballot at AL5! That would mean students needing AL4 to be 100% assured of placements in the most popular sch. How many students can do that? I suspect even the avg geppers will have challenges hitting that height.
No one can give you a definitive answer, well, except mabbe certain statistical dept within MOE if there is one.
Still, I would say that the odds are pretty much stacked in your favour. After all, a PR with AL5 is still ranked higher than a citizen with AL6 regardless of their order of sch.

yes, my gal AL6 last year and balloted out… luckily… it was not my 1st choice anyway but my gal was swayed to try it because of many kaypoh influencers around (keep saying to her, aiyoh such good result why not rgs, etc…)
aiyo, AL6 is indeed a very good score, but sadly not good enough to anyhow choose between RGS and MGS.
my suggestion to TS is put MGS as first, then choose another school carefully.

AL5 to RGS is nearly 100%, doesn’t matter being PR or foreigner. -
But there are 3500 more students this year than last year. If RGS does not increase the intake this year, the AL 5 foreigners may still be balloted out. If I am the parent of a foreigner AL 5 girl, I will still place RGS as 1st choice (that is if I find the school suit my girl), and also seriously choose a 2nd choice school that my girl is happy with too.

if base on stats, with 3500 more students, 3% top with AL4-5 means around 105 students more with AL4-5, if base on this number, for simplicity, assuming around 53 girl and 52 boy… so, assuming all half applying for RGS and MGS, that work out to be around 26 per school extra applicants with AL4-5 which will eat into AL-6 slots. how many affected? we have no idea since we wont have the breakdown… also not all AL4-5 will apply only these 2 schools, the actual number for extra applicant fighting for the limited seat would be around 20 is my guess… i dont think AL-5 will be balloted out, these extra applicants will eat into AL-6 slots… so, those with AL6 will be even harder to get in…

Yes agree we dont know the actual numbers , to be sure the extend more students would have on the cop. I guess it will be my approach, if I have a foreigner daughter - taking my 2nd choice seriously too

Since we’re getting our hands dirty with guesstimates and numbers, here’s my take. Now we know that RGS Y1 intake is roughly 400 and 100% IP. Assuming MGS intake is of similar size and we also know that it offers affiliated students bonus of up to AL 17 (2024 intake), one would assume that the IP intake of the latter to be much smaller.
Having a smaller intake would make it more susceptible to fluctuations in COP. Perhaps we may see the first balloting for AL 5 kids to MGS in future, if there’s an uptake in its popularity.
