Comparing Enrichment Programme versus Private Tutor

HiEnrichment or Tutor ?
It all voice down to your own child.
If your child is the attention seeking or those who cannot stay still for more than 5 minutes or those who are easily distracted, then individual tuition will be best. Else you may consider group tuition ( likely at homes ) or enrichment centre.
However, the teacher students ratio for enrichment centre is normally rather big either 1:10 or 1:20.
I have heard from some parents who sent their kids to this x-school teacher who specialise on Maths only. Her ratio is 1:4 or so and she is very skillful. Last year, there is this child who was P2 then, and the teacher feels that he is quite good and suggested coaching him on higher level. The mum agreed and that child scored full marks for SA2 last year and at that moment that teacher is already coaching that child materials of P3 level. The teacher is currently moving fast for him, coaching him P4 materials and preparing him for Gifted exam at no extra charge. Another parent who has a P6 child who is weak in problem sums and that teacher is guiding her more on word problems solving with model drawings . Her lessons are like 'Tailored to Measure' , depending on individual child .
She told me that the teacher charges $200 for every four lessons. If your child miss a lesson due to CCA or whatever reason, no fees will be deducted, which means your $200 will stretch for a longer period or you can arrange for makeup lesson. (Unlike enrichment centre, one will have to just forgo it, like my boy in Learning Lab - miss several lessons due to school matter.) Oh yes but one will need to pay $30 material fees which include assessment book, other school exam papers, etc.
My own boy is P6 Gifted program but I only put him in for English tuition at Learning Lab Gifted Program and another current school teacher ($400 for 4 lessons) for English Compo in my house. Feel that is rather expensive. But most enrichment centre does not cater for Gifted Program and I cant find any 'make to measure' tutor except one-to-one and Learning Lab.
Anyone knows of any specialise Good X-School English teacher or Current teacher offering 'tailor to measure' for English lesson and charging at reasonable price like the Maths teacher I mentioned. I am hoping to find one with small teacher-student ratio ( 1: 4 to 1:6) . Thanking you in advance.

I think 400 dollars for 4 lessons for creative writing alone is very expensive.I am also looking for a good english teacher just for creative writing but to no avail as most teachers want to teach everything in english, not just writing alone.
My girl loves to write but she is not exam based. If anyone has got good tutor to recommend, do let me know. Many thanks in advance...

Hi Joy,
Agree with you. I was looking around but could not find one that specialise in composition.
This teacher that I mentioned was my daughter’s P6 form teacher who taught her English two years ago. I like her teaching and asked her to teach my boy last year but she rejected. I offer her again this year with the market price for current school teacher ($400) this year and she finaally accept it.
I suppose I will have to bear with it - 6 months to go. -
$400 for 4 lessons, and each session is how long?
No matter what, its very ex! IS that the market price for school teachers?
No wonder so many of them part-time or even quit to teach tuition! -
Hi Angeline,
$400 for 4 lessons of 2 hours per lesson. -
My friend just hired a tuition teacher that is a current school teacher for her p6 girl…Each month is 600 dollars, that is 8 lessons, she told me, its only for 10 mths, so its worth the investment…is it a norm and does this really works?I thought from p5 onwards, one has to be more or less get prepared?thanks

HI Joy,
The earlier you prepare a child, the better he or she will be. So if you can start a child from K1, that will be best.
As for my boy, I think he needs a little more practices on writing and some reminder on things that he should not do in his PSLE exam and so I invest in it only now. His school trained him to write reports, presentation, bibiography, etc and they had very little composition writing opportunity. I spoke to the teacher and she said that they will only train them after mid year. I am worried that it may be too late to learn the skill of writing good composition by then so I kiasu and start now - hopefully not too late.
As for your friend, I think starting now is better then not starting at all. If one can afford then why not. Anyway some children request for tuition jsust to boost their confidence. Their friends had tuition, so they feel more confident when they have them too. So it depend on your child’s request too. -
Yes, I totally agreed with you that from preschool, the language foundation has to be strong.
My girl loves to write but she is not geared to exam...and that is why am worried and hope someone can bring her on track. She has vocabs but the maturity in the compo is not there.
