Hi every parents out there!

Do anybody know when straits time will publish 2008 Pri 1 registration materials in their paper?
What registration materials are you referring to? Most info can get from MOE website. K2 kids will also be issued a small booklet detailing the date of each phase of registration.

Hi titank

If you are doing PV work for all 3 schools, does it mean that as parents we can choose which school we prefer? This is assuming all 3 schools has place for our kids on the same phase.
raynreg,
During registration, parents are only allowed to register for one school, regardless of the number of schools they PV in. However, some parents still prefers to PV for more schools as they want to know more about the schools before deciding which they want to register.

Wow I ao noticed that some of them had dropped to 200 intake, like that sure in very early stage in ballot fights. 😢

At the end of Phase 2A(2), 50% of the remaining places will be allocated for Phase 2B registrants and the other 50% for Phase 2C registrants in a school. In the event that less than 50% of the allocated vacancies are taken up at Phase 2B, the remaining vacancies will becarried forward to Phase 2C.

So if left 200 at the end of Phase 2A(2), 100 go into Phase 2B & 100 go into Phase 2C?

We have consolidated the balloting history from 2006 into a simple to read table without cross referencing different documents. You may see it http://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/content/singapore-primary-1-registration-school-balloting-history.

As each phase of the 2009 P1 registration ends, we will update the remaining number of vacancies along with balloting status of each school. Hopefully, this will result in better information for future batches of Primary school children.

That is right. And even if there are >100 qualifying students for Phase 2B, there may or may not be balloting for that phase. Here are some scenarios:

- Assuming there are exactly 100 students <1km>100 qualifying students for Phase 2B. Also, the remainder of those who qualified for Phase 2B but stay further away may or may not even get a chance to ballot for the remaining 100 places in Phase 2C, depending on how many qualifying students in Phase 2C stay <2km away.

- If there are < 50 students staying <2km away qualifying for Phase 2B, all 50 will be automatically allocated a place. The remaining 50 places may have to be balloted if there are more than 50 qualifying students outside of the 2km zone. This is the case when a parent of a child outside of the 2km zone qualifies for Phase 2B by virtue of the Parents Volunteer programmes. If this parent did not make it through the ballot in Phase 2B, he/she will only get a chance to ballot in Phase 2C if there are less than 100 qualifying students for Phase 2C staying within 2km of the school.

It gets complicated, but what this means is that distance is the most important factor for each Phase. Even if you do PV in the school, you may not even get a chance to ballot in Phase 2C if you do not stay within 2km of the school.

Hi ChiefKiasu,

Wow very complicated yeh, in short the distance is the deciding factor? I'm targetting to do PV for the following schools

Fairfield Methodist (Distance > 2Km)
River Valley (Distance > 2Km)
Radin Mas (Distance 1-2 Km)

I'm aiming Fairfield Methodist as 1st choice as it is a single session. If scenario of ballot occur in phase 2B(2), then my chance is very low?

What's your advice then? I still taget Radin Mas?

my hubby said he read from last week’s paper that Phase 2A also subjected to ballot!!?? Is this true? I always presume if I’m an ex-school girl, my chances is as good as 100%???

In theory, all phases are liable for balloting, as long as demand is greater than the supply of vacancies for that phase.

Balloting rules:
If too many qualifying parents apply in any Phase, there may or may not be balloting. The school will apply the distance rule, ie. less than 1km, 1-2km, and greater than 2km.
Example:
If there are 100 places available, with the following distribution of applicants:
• 50 less than 1km,
60 1-2km,
20 greater than 2km,
•
then those 50 less than 1km will get their places without balloting. The 60 1-2km will have to ballot to see who gets the remaining 50 places, while the 20 greater than 2km will not even get a chance to ballot in that Phase.

Phase 1 - Siblings currently studying in school only. It is very unlikely there is not enough vacancies given the fact that most Singaporean families are small. Hence there will be no balloting in this phase.

Phase 2A1 - For close affiliates to school, eg. alumni, board member, etc. You need to be a paying member of the school's alumni for at least 1 year to qualify for this phase. Balloting rules apply

Phase 2A2 - For ex-students or siblings who were ex-students, and school staff members. Balloting rules apply.

In practice, it is very rare that balloting happens at any stage of Phase 2A. That is why you are generally safe if you are an ex-student. To be even safer, make sure you are a paying member of the school's alumni.

Balloting normally occurs only in Phases 2B and 2C. Whatever remains after Phase 2A is split equally for allocation in the 2 phases. So only half of these places can be allocated in Phase 2B and the rest reserved for Phase 2C.

Phase 2B - For parent volunteers or affiliated clan members. Balloting rules apply. Whatever places that are unallocated in Phase 2B is simply added to Phase 2C.

Phase 2C - For everyone else. Balloting rules apply.

So yes, distance is definitely a critical element to your success in getting your child into a school you want. That is why it is wise to choose a school that is <1km as your first choice unless you are an ex-student of a better school.

Hope this finally clarifies how the system works.
