      Lahburlug:
We have believed in by not stressing our gal out, ie: going into tougher and more popular shools like NanHua, she could probably do better in neighbourhood schools as based on her current learning abilities and attitude, she gets motivated and will do better when she does something that she is capable of, but gets de-moralised and gives up easily when she attempted something that is beyond her abilities. Is this normal in all children at her age (4+)?

Well, having said that, sometimes we do feel that by not pushing (or forcing) her to her limits (going into better schools), she will not do well academically, but on the contrary, we also worry that if by going into such schools, if she can't cope, she might end up losing her confidence and interests in studies.

It's hard to be parents nowadays isn't it?
Actually not true. Some of the neighborhood schools' SA papers are even more challenging than the 'popular' school my son is in - at least for P1. And some of the neighborhood schools have streaming even in P1 or P2 but my son's school only streams pupils into 'better' classes only in P3. And some of the neighborhood schools give out more homework than my son's school.

        Thanks, jedamum.

wwcookie, is it possible to reveal those schools (the school in which your son is in, as well as a handful of those neighbourhood schools in which are tougher than your son's school) in which you have made the comparison with?

Well, to be able to get into those popular school, PV is required and we're probably too late... haiz.... 😞

But does it mean that since FuHua is within a km, we'll defintely get a place even if we do not fulfill in any of the Phases? (Phase 1, 2A1, 2A2, 2B, 2C, 2C Supplementary) I'm kinda confused over this thing... :?

No. If the number of applicants staying within 1 km exceeds the no. of vacancies left for the school by Phase 2C, there will be balloting. Those outside 1km will not have a chance to ballot.

But if the no. within 1km is less than the vacancies, all these people will get in first. Then, if the remaining no. of applicants exceed the vacancies, those between 1 - 2 km get in first. But if even those between 1 - 2km exceeds the vacancies left, then this group needs balloting. The rest, no chance even to ballot.

My son's school - NanHua Pri
Clementi Primary - Streams kids into classes based on their abilities from P1 onwards
Choa Chu Kang Primary - SA papers more challenging
Unity Primary - lots of homework (till the kid cries according to the mommy  )

Just one comment. Sometimes in the more popular school, it's difficult to stream from P1 because the kids' results are all very good. Not surprising to see that the total marks only differs by 0.5 for each position. My son's school gives out best in Mathematics prize. And for P1, about 7 or 8 pupils will get this prize. They get perfect scores for all the Maths tests and exams throughout the year. But as the kids progress to higher levels, only 1 will get this prize.

CCKPS is my 2nd choice if I can’t get into De La Salle this July. I stay within 1km of De La Salle. But have heard that within 1km, they give priority to Catholics.

Actually I was eyeing Nanyang & Nanhua last yr but recently come to realise it is practically zero chance after analysing the results.

I also have heard that CCKPS give priority to people whose nieces/newphews are studying there.

I think you should have no problem getting into CCKPS since the school is 'undersubscribed' every year. Priority given to Catholics and relatives?? Hmm.. I don't think so - everybody who falls into the same phase will get an equal chance in the balloting process, no?

wwcookie and anyone who can give advice

I called up De La Salle & South View just now (I am within 1km of both sch). Both said all registrations for 2C are all within 1km.

                    De La Salle
141 registered out of 66 vacancies

                    South View
167 registered out of 80 vacancies

Very stressful. Shall I go to CCKPS straight away and give up balloting chances? CCKPS has open house this Sat. I worry no. of applicants go up.

PS. Last 2 yrs South View had open house. And according to website, principal was changed from 2004 and she brought the sch to greater heights, that’s why in short time, it grows in popularity.

I am keen to register my daughter at Jurong Primary School.

Would like to hear from All any comments on the school. It will be good if anyone has children currently in the school to share their experience.

                        Hi skmummy

As promise, here is the quick snap shots of what I think of Jurong Primary. Not much details though & I do hope there are parents who will be able to share their experience & thoughts here as my son is only in primary 1 this year.

I read in Young Parents Magazine that Jurong Pri surprisingly produces the most number of gifted student in a particular year. Not sure how the magazine got their sources from & I don’t really agree on the word "produces".

Anyway, classes for p1 will consist of students with mix abilities. I took a glance during parents teacher meeting (4X a yr), the students mark ranges from less than 20 to more than 90. So, main concentration for the teacher will be to those who fail or having borderline passes. They will have support program to reach out to those who does badly. The higher ability students will be seated with lower ability students to reach out to those that needs help.

The school session will be alternate P1 morning, P2 afternoon, P3 morning etc. The school will have 2 CAs with mid & final year exam. I heard there are a lot of homework daily (I can’t comment on this as my son told me he finishes his in school).

When the school just started, I was quite surprise that P1 students are required to write a journal. Err… even in RGPS, the students are introduce to composition first before journal was introduce. Funny thing though, during the 2nd parents teacher meeting, the teacher told me that they are introducing composition in term 3. So… why the journal writing at the start then as journal has no helping words at all.

At the end of the final year, the students will be stream. Top 3 classes, 3 bottom classes & the rest will be the average classes. Classes with different abilities will not be arrange in sequence.

I tried writing to school to ask for feedback. The school is not very responsive when I wrote to gather more info on what is covered in the top 3 classes & how are the kids selected.
