My boy is pretty weak in number/shapes patterns. I wonder what can I do to help to improve in that area....

My younger girl had finished her SA yesterday, this morning she is as free as a bird ... results for the earlier papers were out already ... so efficient right .... the older one is now taking her least favorite subject, MT. We had a hard time revising last nite and in the end she only go to bed after twelve, needless to say, this morning wake up with grumpy face ... hope she will make it after all her hard work

Unfortunately, still one more paper to go…
my conversation with child 2 days ago…
Mum: How’s your SA today?
child: ok.
Mum: What paper did you have today?
child: errr…I think…Maths.
Mum: You had Maths today??
child: errr…maybe English lah.
Mum: Hah? You don’t know what paper you did today? (Die lah…)
child: err…Ya lah, English lah.
Mum (gave up even asking how was paper since can’t even remember which paper) Sigh
Later in the afternoon…
Mum: What should you be preparing for now?
child: ??
Mum: What paper are you having tomorrow?
child: Chinese???
Mum: MATHS!!!
This is after spending them showing child the timetable last week…and explaining what should be done for revision. -

Try copying out questions relating to tis area from whatever maths assessment books you have on hand. Then, sit with your son and make him do them. You have to observe and see where are his weaknesses (ie. what kinds of questions does he get stuck with.) From that you should be able to find out his problem area (as shape patterns test one on visualisation and logical skills, while number patterns also test one on fundamental arithmetic skills). You can then work on building up his fundamentals. This method worked for my younger son! -
hi mowmow,
thanks for the tip!! -
My P4 daughter has told me she has problem with number sequence too, just the night before her SA1 !
I don’t know if there is any formula to that so I checked with my son. He was pretty good with the number sequence staff in primary, therefore I didn’t hear any problem of this sort before. But alas, very hard to get anything out of his mind, I sometimes don’t understand how it works. Finally, I came to some sort of conclusion and told my daughter to look out for the rate of change between each number, if it is kind of same rate, you work in the direction of addition and subtraction, if it is exponential, then work in the direction of multiplication and division. Not sure how much she understood, actually not sure how much it makes sense too.
My son mentioned that his sis should look at number sequence more often and memorize the product of some numbers. I know this appeals to him tremendously and he has been doing it from young. But for my daughter it is going to be tough. Hopefully, this is just a 1-mark question that she can afford to lose… -
My P1 son result is out for ENG & MATH.... this day school are so efficient!
Hiiaz.. as I expected, careless mistake everywhere for his math
Well, I'm not upset thought because afterall is his very first \"exam\" in his life!
but but.. my HB gets so upset and :siao: about it! He said :\"I am ok if he don't know how to attempt to the question, but I'm definately not OK due to his careless mistakes!!\"
... iya, how to get him sit back and understand har?? -
hey exams are over!!
while all the while i do not encourage rewards practising, one day, my husband then told my boy that he'll get him some stuff if he get full marks! all my efforts down the drain with that one line! i had to reiterate that full marks is not the judging criteria, but whether how much effort he put in for the paper ie i will decide when he gets the papers back.
my boy is eyeing an expensive lego set. to try to divert his interest elsewhere, one fine day i showed him a picture of an ERP clock (can be purchased from LTA Gallery at $20 per pc  ) in the newspapers and he went  (he is a 'traffic' signs/gantry/gadget fanatic
) and asked me if i can get that for him too. :moneyflies:
so...what are you guys getting for your kid as a treat for their effort (be it something or just an outing)? my mum got me a $1.80 doll for my SA2 when I was in P1
