In the 1st week of a fund raising campaign, class 6a raised 4 times as much as class 6b. In the 2nd week, 6a raised another $240 while 6b raised another $160. Given that 6a raised thrice as much as 6b within these 2 weeks, what was the total amount of money raised by the 2 classes?

First week;
6a --> 4 units
6b --> 1 unit

2 weeks;
6a --> 4 units + $240 = 3 parts

6b -->1 unit + $160 = 1 part
------> 3 units + 480 = 3 parts

Using a model;

6a [ ][ ][ ][ ][--$240--]
6b [ ][ ][ ][----$480---]

Hence ;
1unit --> $480 - $240 = $240
5units --> $240 * 5 = $1200

$1200 + $240 + $160 = $1600

Sam ate 8 chocolate bars and Mike ate 16 vanilla cookies.
The ratio of Sam’s vanilla cookies to chocolate bars became 8:1 and the ratio of Mike’s vanilla cookies to chocolate bars became 3:1.

How many vanilla cookies did Sam buy?
