That's why i start with note reading and rhythm counting on the very first lesson. JMC courses start with listening first as the students are used to it hence refuse to read notes later even when they are taught to do so in the later stage of the course. However, it is too late by then

That's exactly what happened to my daughter! She started her JMC with Yamaha at 5 & half years old and after 2 years, I signed her up for individual piano lessons. She achieved distinction for grade 1 practical and I was a happy mother. She is good at 'listening' (probably acquired through her training at Yamaha) and has perfect pitch. She can play (2 hands) some of the pop songs she likes quite well just by listening. Her problem starts when she progress to higher grades. She has been reluctant to read the music notes, prefering to play by the ear when practising for her exam pieces. Not surprisingly, she usually almost fail/failed her sight readings. Her current piano teacher has been complaining that her note reading is poor. She has cleared her grade 5 and is contemplating dropping piano for good! As a parent, I am in a dilemma; I do not wish to force her to carry on if she does not wish to but am afraid she will regret it later when it will be more difficult to pick up again. I enjoy listening to the pop songs she plays. Even her paino teacher commented that she has the ex-factor. For all her theory exams, she has never get less than a distinction.
Sounds like me when i was young...i went thru e whole jmc works n proceeded to individual lessons. I dreaded gg jmc coz pace was too slow for me...din dare to tell mum then...lol
But guess i picked up too much hearing n sight reading wasn't strong.i could play by hearing but struggled thru reading so much so that it took me a while to play a new piece unless my teacher played it once for me.
Did v well for theory but didn't have much confidence for practical...
When practicing at hm,i would do bare minimum for reading notes then proceed onto my 'own' music. That is compose my own music thru emotions that came that time. I remember times when my dad would b doing laundry on sundays while i was practicing n my mum would b nagging me to practice books...in e end, they'd still comment on e music i made n ask me to play again. My only reply was-i cun play back e exact same tune as i wasn't reading any notes. I got close to e tune though...
After i got to upper primary,with exams n mum's constant nagging n tougher notes,i started skipping classes at my mum's expense since she was e person paying. I gradually lost interest in classes but still played at hm occasionally. Totally stopped classes in secondary. Haven't touched piano since. Always hoped that my kids would b able to play as well -
I am living in East Coast, looking for a female experience piano teacher to teach at my place for my two children grade 4 and grade 6.

It's a pity when talented kids give up music. Having very good ears and improvisational skills are essential for playing contemporary music. Notation skills are important for analyzing classical music. It boils down to choosing the right genre. ABRSM is not the only exam board. My DD is 3. She has supposedly finished the basic music lessons in her school and can learn piano solely with a piano teacher now. Thing is, is this a little early? Just wondering since there were comments about finger strength, and also how some schools don’t offer such 1-on-1 lessons until the kids are older. And DD’s fingers are still so short!
Also, what are the benefits of letting a kid learn piano all the way to diploma level? Thought I’ll just start DD on music since it supposedly improves the brain and to make sure she grows up with a sense of beat, but didn’t realise that she would take to it well, so now contemplating what to do should she want to pursue piano seriously in future. -
ABRSM offers jazz syllabus.
En, benefits of learning all the way to Dip level - can pursue music teaching in future or apply to do music at a degree level. Whether she will pursue it seriously, one can only see when she reaches a higher level. Currently all is "play". When it comes to the classical training, it is a different ball game.
At the age of 3, it is somewhat too young to use 1-1 approach though my colleague is teaching a 2.5 yr old. My colleague does find it difficult because the little girl does not know how to write, reading and counting still not that familiar either. -
Any comments on myc? Their books look thick n takes 3yrs just to complete their junior program-sunshine…then move onto moonbeam…

Ofcourse there is. My child began play a musical instrument late in life - in 4th grade, at the ripe old age of 9 - when her public school offered classes. She chose violin, and loved it. Her teachers recognized her ability, and supported her decision to become a professional. But when she reached conservatory, what a shock! Most of the other students had begun years younger, in kindergarten or earlier. She had to practice 5 to 7 hours a day to catch up to those 'virtuosos.' Based on that experience I had just realize that I really have to make my children get acquainted with music at a very young age.
