I Can Read - Discussion

DC Mummy:
Moving in the ICR level, is more blending and learn to read. Everyweek, they are covered for the spelling. If he is picking it up fast, is considered quite good but don't pressurised too much. As our ultimate aim is to ensure the kids are bound with the reading skill before they attend school and able to read story on their own. Thanks, Monster Mummy. Yap, I will check with the teacher in next lesson. DS knows the first, middle and last sound. Most of the time, he is able to blend the words except those sight words that can't use phonics method to decode.
At this age 4 yo, I consider him reading fairly well. He enjoys his PRP lessons partly becos it doesn't need to write much, just tracing the letters in workbook. If moving him to ICR level that requires more writing, am afraid he may not be ready and puts him off in learning. -
hi, i hv just brought my son for a assessment @ ICR. he has difficulty in his words blend & sounds so the assessor said to place him at TCS level.
The thing is the fees are $496/3 months excluding registration fees, materials & refrundable deposit. May i ask is this fees worth to pay?
so far i 've read alot of review/comments, some positive some negatives. any advice? having some headache here. he will be entering pri 1 next yr & i’m worried he may not be able to pick up.
thinking of enrolling my daughter too but then the fees wld be 2x. gulp! -

personally I feel that ICR is gd for learning how to read & spell. My DD1 had benefitted fr this course (started in PRP, now she is in the advance stage of ICR). Her current P1 sch spelling is a breeze. It usu take her less than 10min to learn & be tested.
We R thinking of stopping her after she finished her advance stage as we don't see further improvements in other areas of the Eng language. Eg. grammar, compre, compo etc. These r pretty imp in terms of handling the academics requirem of Pri sch.
We r thinking of sending DD2 to ICR as well when she's in K1. Similarly, our purpose is juz to enable her to read and spell.
Juz my 2cents. -

I hope I can help you out....okay.
From what I know is that when comes to teaching languages, ones really need to be patient. Speaking from the experience of teaching 4 boys on phonics all on my own, actually the child must know the phonics sounds (not just ABC), digraphs and other basic phonics rules as well. In this case, the child may not learn this from the DVD because it is a passive learning and not interactive involving 5 senses.
Although none of my children attend the ICR but I have all their books. From the book itself, one must really know the phonics rules before can embarking into blends and hence reading. Hopefully this helps. This will aid in the teacher in teaching the child how to blend.
I have seen children knows all the phonics sounds but that does not necessarily mean they know how to blend the sounds into words (the ability to determine what is the ist, middle and last sounds of a word). Also the child may not be able to deduce what are the different sounds from a pronounced words. So in this aspect, the child needs to go back and reinforce the phonics sounds althogether.
We need to be realistic.....the learning pace will be much slower if a child goes to the center once a week as compared to learning everyday at home.
