we were all briefed about this excellent workshop coming up, during the meeting conducted by rgps alumni team for parents who are enrolling their kids in for Pri 1, next year 2012 or after.

this is an invitation purposely initiated by our school alumni team to help our own rgps parents first, who in turn then can guide our pupils. To invite this important Maths guru down our school to teach us first. Many other primary schools also waiting eagerly for their turn to invite this guru down their schools to teach / explain the concept, because many parents from other primary schools in SG also want to be taught by guru. So, it is by appointment, all got to wait patiently for your turn - depend on his dairy availability. Because public also wants him to teach parents in public. For public, the organizer is Marshall Cavendish.
dd brought back a letter regarding a 3hrs (9am-12) course on 'How to teach Model Maths' for Parents only on 23/4 (Sat) at the school. $30 per parent. Anyone going?

Yeah think i will be going, what abt u?

It's a good opportunity to know more about modeling, i will be going too.
Wow, looks like it is going to be overwhelming. I have signed up for 2 seats. I read somewhere in the letter that they will ballot if more than 100 sign up. So just to increase the chance if there is balloting. Oops!!! 🦆

Oh such a strategy ah? Acutally if demand is too high, they should first take away those who took 2 seats (ie allocate one seat per child). After that if still exceed demand then ballot. Fairer right? Haha...

it is going to be taught by Dr. Yeap Ban Har - author of that Mastery Bar modeling book. The parents workshop will be conducted at rgps premises, organized by rgps alumni team.

Last time Dr. Yeap taught only individual level, at the parents workshop. This time round however is different. He is going to teach all levels P1 to P6 concurrently at parents workshop on Saturday 23 April, using Bar model methodology approach. Not sure how he's going to teach all levels at same time. An eye opening experience ! Should go together with your spouse. So that if one spouse is tired of teaching your child maths at home, the other spouse can take over. $30 is an worthwhile investment!

Yes, some primary schools at Pri 1 already using his bar modeling method approach to solve problems. The advantage of using bar modeling is because can solve very complicated maths problems very fast, at split second. When come Pri 3, pupils issue encounter maths problems with algebra, etc. This method can overcome quickly, because the method is visual to kids. Since it's visual, kids understand much easier. Teachers have found it very useful, some schools had started using it. Radin Mas primary is one already embarking on this methodology, you may read the link here:-

                http://school.radinmaspri.moe.edu.sg/dept/math_dept/Orientation_P1_Parent_Talk.ppt#287,13,Model Drawing

gradually, more and more Primary Schools in SG will start adopting his approach to tackle and solve P1 maths problems.

in fact, Dr. Yeap approach has won many critique in US. Many US Maths teachers and Maths professors are using his method to teach students in US, follow our Singapore method, because our Singapore students excel in Maths internationally in global Maths competition. You may read more about it yourself from internet.

you may read Dr. Yeap profile here:-
                http://www.banhar.com/profile.html

registration is first come first serve, while seats last!
I've attended his talk before. Very informative.

i think alumni will give prority to those with kids entering Pri 1 next yr 2012 first. Those enter P1 later in 2013, etc - in the event if response is overwelming, got to wait next round.
