      Funz:
Try saline nasal spray or wash like Sterimar.

Kiddos' PD recommended that to both as they both have allergy rhinitis. If it is not severe, she prefers that they use this instead of other nasal drops or spray as it is natural. And it helps maintain a clear airway.

You can get it at most pharmacies.
Oh yes, Sterimar....we did use that before.

Trouble is, DS really doesn't like getting sprayed in the nose and will kick and scream and cry...ending up with the nose more blocked than before! 😞

        sashimi:
Eucalyptus oil. We have it in diluted form (from my MIL, I'll have to ask DW for details) which we spray on DD's pillow/bed, and her back/chest. Must be diluted otherwise may irritate skin. Eucalyptus oil has decongestant properties so will unblock noses.

However, I think it is also an ingredient in many decongestant oils like Axe oil and Vicks so you may alr be using it.
My mom buys the oil in bigger bottles. She says that it is very expensive as it's pure and an essential oil, the kind you use in aromatherapy. She dilutes it (probably with a lesser oil, not water naturally) and passes it to us in a small spray bottle. Even diluted, it may also irritate skin so sometimes, I spray it on my palm and very quickly transfer it to DD's skin. You have to do this within 1 second of spraying or lose the oil to evaporation. I spray it on her back, chest, throat, back of throat and ears.

(When DD used to be bitten by bed bugs/mites, my mom also told me to spray it on her bedding as the bugs hate eucalyptus. I don;t do this anymore since she doesn't get bitten anymore and the oil is expensive.)

          BigDevil,

I use Badger Winter Wonder Balm (a type of vapour rub) on my DS since few months old whenever he has flu/blocked nose (now going 22 mth). Rub some on chest, throat, back, under feet then cover with socks before sleep. Can also massage at both sides of nose bridge to clear the congestion.

Reason that i use Badger’s because it’s mild and not too strong for children.

Ingredients : Virgin Olive Oil, Beeswax, Ginger Extract, Blue Gum Eucalyptus Oil, Tea Tree Oil, Rosemary Oil, Peppermint Oil, Tangerine Oil, Gum Benzoin, Ravensara Aromatica, Lavender, Thyme.

You can also get Vicks kid’s version, available at Guardian Pharmacy. Bought Badger from ‘Mom Essentials’

I like essential oils, sometimes i drop some eucalyptus, peppermint and chamomile oil in diffuser when DS has cold/flu.

Thank you all for the wonderful suggestions.

I went out for lunch and popped into Guardian to buy Karvol, mainly because it is readily available.

Also because of its easiy administration since it is inhaled rather than ingested. DS doesn't like to take medicine, unlike his sister who doesn't even mind the bitter Chinese medicine.

Will let all know how it goes after tonight. 🙏 🙏

I am all thumbs on Karvol. However, to reduce the tendency of blocked nose, I have established ‘indoor air quality’ maintenance routine:

              1) open the bedroom windows and doors to improve air circulation after switching off the air-con (on hot days). During the cooler months, I’d try not to on the air-con.

              2) Invest in a good vacuum cleaner - I’ve got one with vacuum+air-cleaner+Hepa filter all in 1.

              3) Use air disinfectant to neutralize bad odour and germs once/twice a fortnight.

              4) Make sure I vacuum the air after I change my bedsheets/ blinds (I’ve had them removed for good and changed to roll-down type)

              5) Clean air-con filter often.

Other than these, I’d get my son(more proned to blocked nose) to sleep on two pillows so his head is not tilted back as that will cause the mucus to flow back and worsen the blockage.

                Hiya BigDevil

I find that steaming up the bathroom and getting kiddo to sit in there for about ten minutes or so provides some relief to nasal congestion. I usually do this after applying some kind of rub/oil, e.g. California Baby Flu and Cold Massage Oil.

If he has a lot of nasal discharge, it helps to cup your hands and tap firmly on his back at the location of his lungs. This shakes the mucus loose so he can get rid of it better.
Lots of liquid is a must. And definitely help him to clear his nose a lot; a nasal spray like Sterimar is useful to thin the mucus.

Hope your little one feels better soon!

First night of Karvol was a success! We didn't even give him Zyrtec before bed, wanting to test out the effectiveness of Karvol.

All of us slept soundly for most of the night. I only had to wake up 3 times to put DS's head back onto the pillow. That's a vast improvement compared to the night before!

                  :thankyou: :grphug: :thankyou:

Just to check if he is sleeping in air con room at night? If he is, may be good to let him sleep in w/o air con. In any case a humidifier may help as the air may be too dry.

My wife also has blocked nose when she sleeps and she relies on the nasal strips to help to open up the nasal canal... It helped for her. Not sure if your boy would be used to having the strip on his nose.

Hope you find a remedy soon 😉

Yup first thing avoid air-con and fan blowing directly at the kid…and you might want to try "Breathe Right" kids nasal strips…worked like miracle on my DD, bought from Guardian.

                        Wish your child sleep well.
