    • Interesting Science Websites

      Hello all

Thought I'd share some science websites we'd been using recently. I've found that these are useful in helping me to answer my kids' relentless questioning. (I couldn't find a relevant thread on this, but please point me in the right direction if one exists.)
Oh, btw I don't know if these are at all helpful for primary science curriculumn since my oldest is just 7yo, but for general interest they are pretty fun to browse πŸ™‚

      For kids:-

Note: if you have certain religious beliefs, you may want to ignore the evolution stuff since there may be potential conflict.

Please add on if you have other great resources, thank you!

Well, if you think of it - to get into medical facualty in NUS you need to be top 1%, but after you graduate, and many years down the road, your pay is not even the top 10%. Therefore it is not worth it.

Of course it's not worth it if you just think of the $$$.
I sincerely hope not all aspiring doctors go into med school thinking of how much they will earn in future. Hopefully all those who make it to med school have hearts too, as well as brains. Imagine meeting a GP/paediatrician/gynaecologist/cardiologist/neurologist who is thinking solely of how much he/she can charge you to make up for all those years of swotting...

Why so many of you all want your kids to be doctors? Do you know that doctors' pay is not as good as you think, at least they are not one of the top earning profession. Then have to study so hard. Might as well go into the financial sector, that's where you can make big bucks. Moreover if become GP, then so competitive. It is so hard to make a good living, given the amount of time spent studying.

Aiyah carebear, maybe it's not about money... Think how useful it is if there's a geriatric specialist at home when you are old and doddering about  That's what DH always said about his own family - they have quite a few specialists around so very convenient when someone needs attention for some part of the body!

Ok, seriously, not all docs do it for the money. I actually agree with you that the pay is not that great, unless you're one of the very well-known specialists and can charge an arm and a leg just for consultation. But then all the docs I know make at least a five-figure salary a month. That's not too shabby at all for most people, isn't it? I definitely wouldn't mind it if my kids make that kind of money!

Anyway, DH certainly didn't go into his profession with starry visions of how much money he can make. It may sound trite but he genuinely wanted to work with and help people, and as a surgeon, till today he still gets enormous satisfaction from saving a life.

I think if one wants to have a better 'return' from all those of years of studying, consider law. πŸ˜„ Endure a few years of swotting through law school and a few more years of being scolded by your boss, clients and judges.... eventually your pay will be very decent hahahaha.

    • RE: Losing weight after pregnancy

Totally agree that bf is great for quick loss of weight. But for me it only worked once... for DS1. Lost about 5kg in less than a month. Didn't help much for DD and DS2 though. 😒 And I tbf all three kids for about 2 yrs each, no use leh.

Anyway, eventually I discovered what worked like magic: cut out ALL processed food! For months all I ate was brown rice, vegetables, white meat and a little fish (imagine no seasoning at all, how to eat wor) and fruits. No noodles, bread etc and definitely no dessert. I think I skipped milk too. Drank only water. Everything was fairly tasteless cos I didn't use any salt, sugar, soya sauce etc. Very sian, but the kilos plunged like rocks into water, and in about two months even my pre-pregnancy clothes were too large.

      (Sorry, OT a bit.
buds, congratulations!!!!! I'm probably the last to know on KSP but better late than never lah. I saw 'dis time 3rd round' and my eyes popped hahaha. Really very happy for you!)

      What a fun topic!

I have three kids. DH and I would lurrrrve for them to follow in our footsteps and we have lots of fun discussing who should be what. Of course DH wants them on his 'side' whereas I hyperventilate at the thought of germs, bacteria and... pus. So, ideally they should all be on MY side and become lawyers. Unfortunately for DH, our two boys freak out at the sight of blood, but they take after me and can talk a cow up a tree. So possibly I would 'win' based on total count. DD thinks she wants to be a physician or a vet, so I work hard to 'convert' her hahaha.

Which Uni in Singapore offers Actuarial Science? Do they take matured applicants?

NTU's B.Bus studies has an Actuarial Science program, I believe.

      2ppaamm:
Is law school suitable for an early entrant? Like only 14 years old but has all the qualifications?
Wow, tough question. I want to say no, I don't think this is an area of study suitable for a 14yo, because there are lots of legal issues (ethics, for one) that will require a certain level of maturity to appreciate.

But then I guess you don't have an average 14yo huh πŸ˜„ .

Law school is a very rewarding experience, but it can also be very demanding and for many, discouraging in the beginning. If she has the intellect, the understanding and emotional maturity equivalent to those much older, and you think she can cope with the rigours, I don't see why not. Er, if you get in the top UK law schools, really will make history.

Imho, for law school, other than the obvious skills (think of all those reading and remembering!), one needs to have the ability to: [1] REALLY THINK, [2] form an opinion, [3] analyze and reason, [4] explain coherently (verbal/in writing) lah. Very simple right?

Er, I'll digress a bit and describe briefly the method of instruction that's common in many law schools. Most professors employ the case method, where students are asked to read cases that illustrate legal rules for specific areas of law. They aren't always straightforward, often confusing, and don't come with commentary. You are supposed to read, digest and analyze prior to class, so really, you do the learning part yourself - rule of law, exceptions, controversial areas etc. Class is for the purpose of discussion of the material which you should already know. I think this is the part that many S'pore kids aren't prepared for, i.e. learn on their own. So if your child doesn't have the need-to-be-spoon-fed mentality, good for her! I taught for a while and have seen first-years going in thinking they can do well based on the study skills that brought them thus far, and many ended up floundering because they don't have the right expectations.

Oh, just for fun here is a sample of the type of essay question frequent in exams:
β€œJudges should be given no discretion in sentencing criminals: all criminal penalties should be fixed by statute. The exercise of discretion in sentencing requires an exercise of moral judgment by the judge, and judges in a modern democracy should not be allowed to exercise moral authority over their fellow citizens.” How far do you agree? Give reasons for your answer.

Fun, right? Try it on your DD.

2ppaamm, actually I think the more difficult part is after graduation, if she intends to practise, cos the first few years as an associate can be quite tough. Lots of work and unearthly hours wor. Very sian for a 18yo to work and work and have not much life for long periods of time. But I guess if she's prepared for it, all will be well :).

My apologies if I'm not much help; a bit blur at this hour...
