Well, if you think of it - to get into medical facualty in NUS you need to be top 1%, but after you graduate, and many years down the road, your pay is not even the top 10%. Therefore it is not worth it.

Of course it's not worth it if you just think of the $$$.
I sincerely hope not all aspiring doctors go into med school thinking of how much they will earn in future. Hopefully all those who make it to med school have hearts too, as well as brains. Imagine meeting a GP/paediatrician/gynaecologist/cardiologist/neurologist who is thinking solely of how much he/she can charge you to make up for all those years of swotting...

        Totally totally agree...
If my specialist is only treating me and for him if i am just a money generating unit, sorry even if the doc is exceptionally talented i would not be comfortable ...

Sorry dollar sense is necessary, but doubt it can give u that satisfaction as doing what u r capable...
If money is the goal then it is fine , and there are quite a few professions that can get u more money with out even a good education....

            ds1 - go govt sector

            ds2 - sportsman

we are not ambitious parents cos we are not talented or gifted people so don’t quite expect giftedness in our sons’ genes.

My DS1 is rather soft-hearted and very easy with people. I don't know what he want to be yet, but he definately can't be a businessman!

DD2 said she wants to be a cleaner because she likes to clean/wipe tables... :!: :!:

DS3 too young to know. He likes to throw balls, jumping and running around, and recently he is into shuttle run, so maybe he could become Singapore first Olympic Games Gold Medalist?? 😐 😐

                reminds me of the song:

When I was just a little girl
I asked my mother, what will I be
Will I be pretty, will I be rich
Here's what she said to me.

                Que Sera, Sera,
                Whatever will be, will be
The future's not ours, to see
                Que Sera, Sera
                What will be, will be.

When I was young, I fell in love
I asked my sweetheart what lies ahead
Will we have rainbows, day after day
                Here's what my sweetheart said.

                Que Sera, Sera,
                Whatever will be, will be
The future's not ours, to see
                Que Sera, Sera
                What will be, will be.

Now I have children of my own
They ask their mother, what will I be
Will I be handsome, will I be rich
                I tell them tenderly.

                Que Sera, Sera,
                Whatever will be, will be
The future's not ours, to see
                Que Sera, Sera
                What will be, will be.

Actually , everyone should do what they love. Really love. Then its not work - its happiness. If my children can find that profession that they are passionate about , then they are very lucky. Bcos you can do it day in and out , and grow with it .

The ultimate job is that we would do even if we are not paid for it. We need to keep searching till we find it....

idealistic ?? ya thats me
                  Well said Sun_2010,

You have expressed what I feel in my post directly πŸ˜„

                  Idealistic? I don't think so ...

Brave ... yes because you dare do go against the grain :celebrate:

Anyway, I will pose this question to my DS and see what he says, I'll update.

KSP, thanks for starting this thread.

OK now i am in my philosophical mood πŸ˜‰

So here goes the Kahlil Gibran's poem which I read often to keep my shortsighted kiasuism in check

                    On Children

Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.

They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts
                    .
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,
which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.

You may strive to be like them,
but seek not to make them like you.

For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.

You are the bows from which your children
as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite,
and He bends you with His might
that His arrows may go swift and far.
                    Let your bending in the archer's hand be for gladness;

For even as He loves the arrow that flies,
so He loves also the bow that is stable.
Thanks for sharing this really beautiful beautiful poem :celebrate:

Chief, may I recommend this for portal publication :please:

Well said about the bow and arrow
For the bow being strong and stable
Wishes to support the arrow to fly far with might

But the archer bends the bow way too much
Causing it to lose its focus and its sight
As much as the bow wants the arrow to fly
The bow feels lost and needs the archer back

The arrow is waiting for the bow
To bring it strength to set upon the mark
The bow struggles with the archer
                      To find that unknown mark

One day the bow will find the mark
But until then it continues to fight with the archer
And meanwhile tries with all its might
To give the arrow the strength to stay on track.

this is so beautiful too! and aptly describe our role as a parent.

The ksparents here got a lot of ink!
