Time schedule & life of Secondary School
-
Hi daisyt,
My daughter is in RGS.
She took school bus to school in the morning, which will pick her up at 6:10, she is same KS loh, insists getting up at 530, end up sitting on the sofa waiting for the bus coming.
She took MRT or bus back to home. -
hi chengsmummy, so good, have school bus. No need to stand or squeeze in our \"first class\" public transport like my girl.
True, life is stressful. Last night, before she went to bed, she was telling me, \"Today, I am so physically and mentally drain up ! Sigh ... but thank goodness, tommorrow is Friday\". -
hi daisyt,
which school is your girl in? I guess should have school bus.
TGTIF(thank godness, this is Friday) is what my girl says every Friday morning. But last night, she sadly told me, ‘mom, I can’t say TGTIF this week, because I have a makeup lesson for Japanese. will get back home after 7, sigh…’ and she worked for her physics project until 11+… -
hi chengsmummy, they have but its full so no more intake for the bus.
TGTIF, yes ! This is what she would say and at first I was still very blur, what is TGTIF. -

Hi ct27,
Thanks for the insight into your secondary/JC life. I agree with you about spending less time on unnecessary activities. That is to set the right priorities. Most Sec 1 and 2 students are adjusting to their new environment and peer pressure/influence or even parents interference sometimes clouded their judgement and decision making. I discuss with my son who decided after 3 months to drop his French when he experience difficulties in coping in a couple of his subjects due to his special needs’ condition. We decide he could take up the language in future whenever he wants at lesiure and not as a testing subject. He also want to focus on doing well for his sports CCA and devoted more time to learning another musical instrument, drumming. He enjoys reading and now with 1 extra free day due to dropping of French, he could put in more time to revise his core subjects which previously all he did was just to finish his homework and projects.
My neighbour’s daughter although was given a choice to do 3rd language, did not take up the offer. With the additional free time, she excel in her academics and had the opportunity to represent her school in National/International competition. She was also one of the top 3 in her school for all the 4 years in the all girls top school.
However, I must also stress that any student should also involve in some class based group activities or social activities during the year. Some of this activities help the student to develop social skills and also provide a platform to understanding teamwork mechanism. Some of the activities also develop organisation and planning skills which is a vital development process from a student to a working adult. But it is also important that the student limit her/his time involvement so as to not neglect their studies.
I know of another parent who son was so involved in his sports CCA and usually went beyond the training into tons of social activities that his lack of time for academics resulted in a mediocre A level performance.
At the end of the day, a student should manage and balance his time and priorities well and parents may have to step in to guide their children and provide emotional support if they find them unable to lead a fruitful school life.
As my son, another parent at his former primary school just commented to me yesterday that she could see and feel my son is really happy and enjoy his secondary school life. She feels many Sec students are feeling stress over their school life coping with too many things at the same time.

haha, let me revive this topic but now is to talk about Sec school holidays because school holidays don’t look like holidays to me at all. In June, she had to go back to school 3 times a week. For CCA extra training preparing for a coming compeition in Sept and the whatever asia youth olympic programes reharsel. Lucky because of the outbreak of H1N1, during the last week of June, all these were put on halt.
Then come to the 1 week Sept holidays. Due to that CCA compeition, she was back to school and another school from 8am to 9,10,11pm and one night was past midnight. I spoke to the teacher in charge and understand that when compeition is near, this is the routine they have to go through. Basically she only slept for 5 hours every days for that whole week !
Now she is already telling me, due to the next major compeition in Jan 2010, she is going to be very busy during the full Nov & Dec holidays. Need to go back to school everyday.
At first I find it very ridiculous to stay in the other school till so late. I went to fetch her on 3 nights. One night, I walked into the general office and saw the principal still there. I have a chat with her, then I went up to lab which the kids were working in. I saw so many students inside, sec in one room, pri in another room. When I saw her serious look face, very concentrating working on the stuffs, my heart started to melt.
I am not complaining, just wish to share to all how I feel. I kept asking her, can you manage ? Are you tired ? She told me, "Don’t worry, I can !". Being a soft hearted mum, my heart aches to see her going through this tough period and worry the same cycle in the coming Nov/Dec holidays. But on the other hand, my hubby was comforting me "Lucky she is a girl. For boys, in NS, its so many times tougher. Don’t worry too much, she is enjoying herself, she is fine." -
