I got a question which I solve by using Algebra. Please give me in answering with models.

Q: Raju and Samy went shopping with a total of $675. After spending some money, the amount Raju had left was five times the amount he spent and the amount Samy had left was four times the amount he spent. If both of them had a total of $553 left.

a) how much did Raju have at first?

b) how much did Samy spend?

Thanks in advance.

=

Solution:
(Using the \"Bags and Boxes Method\" found in Raffles Maths Tricks – Vol 1):

Let Raju put his money in 6 Bags (at first).
Spent = 1 Bag
Left = 5 Bags
(For Bags - draw Circles)

Let Samy put his money in 5 Boxes (at first).
Spent = 1 Box
Left = 4 Boxes
(For Boxes - draw Squares)

6 Bags + 5 Boxes = $675 (at first)
5 Bags + 4 Boxes = $553 (left)
1 Bag + 1 Box = $675 - $553 = $122 (Spent)

4 Bags + 4 Boxes = 4 x $122 = $488
1 Bag + 0 Box = $553 - $488 = $65
6 Bags = 6 x $65 = $390 (Ans A)

1 Box = $122 - $65 = $57 (Ans B)

Hi All,

Can anyone help on this question, thanks!

Mdm Zheong packed some beads into 14 small boxes and 15 big boxes.
There were equal number of beads in each small box and equal number of beads in each big box.
Each big box contained 5 more beads than each small box.
3/8 of the beads were packed in small boxes.
How many beads were there in each small box?

There were 280 people at the concert. 1/4 of the males and 1/5 of the females wore glasses. Given that a total of 60 people wore glasses in the concert, how many female wore glasses?
