There’s a reason why Chinese New Year isn’t Chinese New Year without the Chinese New Year songs that tells Chinese New Year celebrators that Chinese New Year is just around the corner.


For the same reason, Christmas is not Christmas without Jingle Bells and Silent Night.

These songs may be old, but never obsolete. They introduce the culture and experience to the uninitiated. They bring the spirit to back to those who have forgotten.

What we need are not new songs about ourselves and our country that we have to learn.

What we need are new ways of singing the words that really matter… and these words cannot be said better than those already engrained in us in the form of the easily recognisable songs of yester-years. There’s a reason why they lasted - because they resonate with us.

It is not what is said or sung that is the most important. It is how it is sung that conveys the meaning.

After news they are not using the fun pack song, I thought it would be safe to turn on tv to watch NDP. now must reconsider…maybe I should bring out my LOTR dvd and watch instead.
