Children these days live a more sheltered life. Many are ferried everywhere because parents do not allow them to take public transport, even at secondary school. Some don't do much physical exercises - their CCA in school is chess, mind games, math society etc. Some struggle through yearly NAPFA tests.
unfortunately most schools only want students who are capable of winning medals for the school in the sports cca. moreover, the school team would have priority use of the field, court, pool. -
no wonder commando camp so near tekong, now I know why. :rotflmao:

Ha ha....now I worry & guilty. My P5 DS has been pestering me to let him go home himself after school everyday. It's either a 15 mins public bus ride + 7mins walk or 25mins walking.....with a damn heavy schoolbag. Mahjiam like a army backpack since the bag is ~20-25% of his weight. Let him get trained up now? Scared he gets too comfortable and next time lazy.....Children these days live a more sheltered life. Even at boarding, some parents insist on helping their kids to pack up every weekend, some going so far as to bring in maids to help. On compulsory overseas trips, some parents tag along, stay at the same hotel etc, just so they can be near their precious just in case.
How do kids learn to be independent and to develop physically for NS? Not surprising that they have a hard time dealing with it.

some go to china to recruit students to boost their medal chances  -
heard on the radio this morn that to be able to swim across that area is quite a feat alr. got lots of ships moving around and one could get lost easily at the open sea.
anyway i think kids nowadays are alr very pampered with maids/parents/grandparents taking care of their everyth. they oso don really spent much time outside school training up. -
though what he did was wrong, it just show how desperate he was to disregard his own safety.
pampared? spoilt? soft? what problems did he face in the camp? was it pure physical exercise or taunting from others that drove him to it? was there any counselling done or was his problems just brushed aside? so many questions as to what actually happened in the camp.
i feel sad for him and hope all is well now. -

That's just an excuse for not getting yourself into shape physically. You can go jogging in the evenings on your own, you can do sit ups and pulls up in your home, you can go cycling, you can play basketball with friends etc OUTSIDE of school. If you know that at age 18 you're entering NS, you'd better make sure you get yourself into shape. Don't wait for the school to get you ready. -
Luckily he didn’t lose his life by doing that. I hope they will provide counselling instead of just punishment. Maybe he just snapped and tried to swim to freedom. Quite poor thing, actually.

You should let him try. I think it's good that he wants to be independent. Let him try once or twice while you fetch him the rest of the time. Ease him gradually into it. He's P5 now. Do you expect to be fetching him around at secondary school?

My son went for a program before NS to become an officer. During the course the trainer who was a psychologist in mindef last time warn us that sometimes people have problems in NS because in school they are treated like the star with very good results, and at home they are the darling of the house. But once they go into NS, they become a nobody and get punished and shouted at. Some people cannot cope with this change. This case reminds me of what he said.
